what do you guys thin of my salamanders list for small games?

HQ
Vulkan He'Stan, The Forgefather *190pt*

Troops
-Tact Squad *185pt*
--10 marines
---meltagun
---multimelta
---combi-melta/power sword

-Tac Squad *132pt*
--8 marines
---multimelta
---combi-melta/chainsword

Fast Attack
-Bike Squad (x2) *93pt/ea*
--3 Bikers
---meltagun (x2)
---combi-melta

-Attack Bike Squad *55pt*
--1 Attack Bike
---multimelta

Point total: 190 + 185 + 132 + 93 + 93 + 55 = 748

any advice would be helpful!! im using this for an escalation tourney (we started w/ 500 pts and get to add 250 pts per round...we can completely change the list...but we get more points if we just build the one we started with)

When building an escalation list where you build on what you have each time, I'd start at the highest point value and then cut back.

Look into Legion of the Damned, seeing as they can pretty much destroy things in cover that don't have an invuln (vehicles, Centurions, even Knights) and benefit from Vulkan's ability. I would also try to get the troops a transport. The bikes are nice though with the melta loadout.

at low point games numbers are your biggest friend...
i'd drop the bikes all together and add either rhinos or drop pods to your tact squads...
also you're anti tank heavy... wheres the flamers... vulkan footslogging isnt worth it... give the man some wheels
like...
hq vulkan 190
t1 10 tact w/ flamer, MM, (MC) combi plasma, melta bomb, PW, rhino or DP=220
t2 10 tact w/ flamer, MM, (MC) combi plasma, melta bomb, PW, rhino or DP=220
fst 5 assaut marines w/ flamer x2, melta bomb, PW, drop pod... vulkan's wheels=120
=750 on the dot...

i like the idea of adding vulkan to an assault squad....makes it soooo much easier for him to do his whole "badass-troops-slayer" thing....but i dont think im gonna be using the combi plasmas....sure they get more shots off...but w/ the risk of gets hot (granted it is slim) id rather have the combi melta since it makes the attached bolter MC as well (vulkan's rule says the weapon is master crafted...not specifically the melta part of the combi-weapon) id rather not risk killing a charactetr when i can just as easily use the single shot to basically assure a slain fig....however...i'll probably end up switching my melta guns to flamers....it just seems so much more worth

One thing you might want to consider is leaving Vulcan for larger games, and starting with a captain on a bike. Bump the two bike squads up to 5 models so they can be troops. Once the points go up, you can add an assault and/or command squad in a drop pod and Vulcan to your list.

I do agree with the concept of staring with the largest list and working back from there. Often times, what’s good at 500 is unneeded at 2k.

Or a cheap librarian

And remember sgts can master craft 1 weapon, so combo plas or melta or grab all make sense.

Yeah...im gonna start doing that..unfortunately....i dont have alot of my salamanders yet...im just startting them and using the tourney as an excuse to build them...i only comfortably have 1800 pts of salamanders...i think ill give my best on working backwards..but i just bought the ravenwing bike/speeder starter kit because we get extra points for buying a new kit every round and using it in our list....sooo the whole building backwards thing is really only gonna work if i know EXACTLY what im gonna buy in 3 months RIGHT NOW

Well, you can leave yourself some flex in the list that you change as you go. For example, if you plan on adding another tac squad when you go from 1,500 to 2,000 you don’t necessarily need to lock in the weapon options. If you find there are a lot of hordes out there, you given them a HB/F, if TEQ are giving you problems, go plasma. But you should have a framework and a roadmap to guide you. Having an idea of you final list will help you avoid dead ends and redundant units. Right now a MM attack bike might seem like a good idea. At higher points, you might want that FA slot for a pod of assault marines or a stormtalon. You can change your list, but having an idea of what you want to play at higher points is a very good idea for escalation leagues.

If you are buying as you go, you just need to make a list of what kits you plan on getting. Looking ahead will also help you grab bargains if there are any to be found.
