Well I would defiantly pick up the army book first then you can figure out what everything does.
I'll give you a quick rundown of the most used and best units...obviously its not everything but just give you a shirt rundown.
Lords...I wouldn't use a lord in 1000 point game but if you do it would be a warlord kitted out to be pretty killy...if your used to vampire counts he isn't like a vampire so not killy like them

Heroes...chieftain is a must, take him with a ward save (foul pendant or talisman of preservation) then make him a battle standard, I usually take him with a halberd as well.
Engineers are always good and if you take 1 with a dokmrocket it can be one of the deadliest 45 points in the game. Taking him with
lvl 1 and a dispell scroll is also good.
Core...always bring slaves. A unit of 40 (5 wide) is a super good unit with a musician. Clanrats are good as a bunker unit for your heroes. Usually 25-30 is good as a bunker.
Weapon teams are pretty pricey points wise but warp fire thrower is the best one in my personal opinion.
Stormvermin are alright...I always take them with a razor standard mainly but sometimes the storm banner, run them 35+
They have halberds and s4 which is the best in our army for "elite" type units.
Special...plague monks are great, not everyone likes them because they get no save. If you give them plague banner and in a unit of 40 they can be pretty deadly.
Gutter runners...these guys are normally a must. Bring then either 7 or 9 with poisoned attacks and slings.
Rat ogres aren't the best but fun to try out sometimes especially if you are just playing against your son.
Rares... Warp lightning canon (buy one or 2 its a must) they are one of the best cannons in the game and are so cheap points wise. Its considered an auto include in every list most of the time
Doomwheel...its pretty fun to use and can be pretty deadly just watch out for hitting your own units with the zzzap attack.
Hellpit abominations... Buy one they are awesome just take them at their base points and they are super hard hitting.
