Hi there, i am a moderately new Vamp player. Next Sunday i shall be playing vs a very experienced wood elf player allied with dwarves in a 3000 point army.
Looking for any tips/army changed
List Here:
Lords = 720
-Vampire Lord; lv 4 of the Lore of Death, Talisman of Preservation, Sword of Strife, Red Fury, Quickblood, Dreadknight = 500
-Master Necromancer; master of the dead = 220
Heroes = 494
- Tomb Banshee = 95
- Isabella Von Carstein =175
- Vampire; Additional hand weapon, heavy Armour, lv1 = 112
- Vampire; Additional hand weapon, heavy Armour, lv1 = 112
Core = 780 (I know its under 750 but me and my opponent are really good friends and are cool with being +-100 of the actual point limit)
- 5 Dire Wolves; doom wolf = 50
- 5 Dire Wolves; doom wolf = 50
- 5 Dire Wolves; doom wolf = 50
- 5 Dire Wolves; doom wolf = 50
- 80 skeletons (Aka bunker unit) = 400
- 30 zombies = 90
- 30 zombies = 90
Special = 606 = 561
- 5 hexwraiths = 180
- Spirit host = 45
- Spirit host = 45
- Spirit host = 45
- 2 bat swarms
- 2 bat swarms
- Corpse Cart; balfire = 106
Rare = 445

Ok Here is the first thing you need to realize that spells like VHDM and/or HV are almost a must for your army and Raise Dead is handy as welI. I prefere VHDM if I'd have to choose between the three. Every Lore of Vampires wizard in your army will need to have ION, so currently you only have one chance to get either VHDM or HV. Not good! Your Vampire lord will need Lore of Vampires as well or make him a Lv 2 Death wizard and the Necromancer Lv 4 Lore of Vampires. An earthing rod can be a great Item to add to a Lv 4 wizardto help when mega casting spells like VHDM (my favorite) or HV.

Alot of points for a bunch of Lvl 1 Lore of Vampires wizards, what exactly do you get from all those Vampire Thralls? they are not great at close combat! A Dispel Scroll Caddy would be more useful, so I'd suggest 2 Lv 1 Necromancers one with the dispel scroll and both taking ION. You can keep Isabella if you really want and the banshee is only mildly useful, so I'd go with a Wight King BSB with a magic banner in place of both.

4 Units of Wolves with 4 Doom Wolves? Drop 1-2 units and all Doom Wolves. Then lower the skeletons by 20 at least, you have the Master of the Dead for a reason. Then dump all those points into a unit of Ghouls or boost your Zombies. Unless you summon alot of zombies in the first 2 turns, 30 is just a speed bump.

I prefer bunkers that are smaller and behind your battle line. You'll eventually need 60+ skelleys to get into battle and thats nowhere you want a bunch of weak wizards.

This section should add up to exactly 750 no more, I understand your friend is cool with it being less, however it shouldn't.

Between your Core (small wolf squads) and Special choices your trying to build a wood elf skirmish army out of VC. VC can't function like that. Your low Initiative and low WS will work against you because of combat resolution damage. All the Spirit Hosts and Bat Swarms need to be combined or deleted.

There is alot of Corpse cart hate here on Dakka, but I love mine. I'd suggest removing balefire and adding lodestone a much better use of points.

Hexwraiths are a good choice.

Your army lacks any stopping power like Grave Guard or Black Knights. Crypt Horrors are ok as a hard hitting unit as well. I'd suggest looking into getting Grave Guard with great weapons and be sure to add Banner of the Barrows this is where the Wight King can add his magic BSB, also your killy vampire can go here as well to add more death. Also be sure to add a champion to accept challenges that you don't want to accept with your Lord. You may need to liquify the hex wraiths and maybe even a rare choice to make better room. at 3000 points game I'd suggest at least 30 of them for 440 points with full command and Banner of the Barrows

Can't go wrong with either and a Tome is an awesome item for the Mortis Engine. As you can imagine I prefere the Mortis Engine even over top its draw backs, if it dies it explodes and miscast double roll. It can be very nasty the last 3 rounds STR 4,5,6 with 2D6 auto Hits to any squad in range. Wait for it to power up and then take it on a killing spree. great at keeping your back field clear of small fast units like Fast Cav.

fix some of my poor wording hopefully that all makes sense.

Glad I could help a bit. Still 20 skeletons is equal to 33 zombies

Dire wolves (5) = 40 points

Corpse cart 120

Between your lords your guaranteed to have all spells. Kinda expensive maybe? It's your show.
Lv 3 the vampire and get a Tome on the engine now you transformed your lv 4 to +6, lv 3 to a +5, lv 1 to. +3
