So this is more painting that build log, but my son and I recently took on this challenge to get 10,000 points of Blood Angels painted to a high tabletop standard by year's end. Having collected a multitude of different armies, and also been victim to shiny model syndrome on figures that just appealed to me, I've decided to unify everything into one massive mega-force. This will be aligned with about 4,000 points of Grey Knights as well, and if we get to it, we will try to share where we stand with it - but first things first - getting the core Blood Angels painted.

Missing from the list and planned to be added as move forward over the next month will be 20 Death Company, 10 of which will dual wield hammers and go in the Stormraven, and 10 of which will have jet packs and travel with Lamartes and Astorath. We are also going to add 15 assault marines with jump packs, a Land Raider Redeemer for the Assault Terminators, and couple of more Rhinos, and one more Death Company Dread with Blood Fists. All totaled, this puts us right at the 10,000 point threshold.

The plan is to paint the base coats and the core elements on all the models, then come back and pick up the smaller details on Round 2. Overall, this army is fairly blingy, with lots of gold. The mono red scheme is also broken up with black details on the left shoulder, the right knee, and the backpacks. On to the pictures:

Chaplain with Power Fist and Sanguinary Guard

Mephiston and Astorath (Mephy still needs some final details)

Dante, the Sanguinor and Sanguinary Guard with Death Masks

Land Raider Crusader with the Terminators - Librarian and Chaplain. Some of this miniatures are from the Space Hulk release

Terminator Assault Squad led by another of the awesome Space Hulk miniatures

Lemartes - the wings are from Puppets War. They will be used this entire unit

Terminator Reclusiarch

Tactical Squad and Dreads

Tactical Squad with Razorback (the heavy flamer was kit-bashed from the bitz of the Crusader kit)

Another view of the Terminators

Sternguard Veterans - the Sergeant is taken from the Honor Guard of the Ultramarines

Death Company Dread with Blood Talons, Lemartes, Librarian and Chaplain (from the Dark Vengeance set)

Death Company Stormraven - I did a detailed blog of this build a while back

More Terminators - the Captain in Terminator Armor is kit-bashed from the Marneus Calgar kit

The Goal - this is the sergeant from the Space Hulk set. He has been completed to the finished quality we hope to achieve over the next few months.

Next on the agenda - acquire the additional kits and get them built and primed. Whether this is madness or simply Blood Rage remains to be seen.

Thanks for looking. All comments and questions welcomed.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies. I'm working on the Techmarine today, as well as the assault squad. Will post some new pictures later today, as well as some information on how I'm painting them.

Okay - tonight's challenge:

Assault Squad led by a Sergeant with Power Fist. The unit has been primed and then sprayed with Mephiston Red.

The basecoats - the Rust-Oleum Camo paint may become my new go-to primer. $4 a can and it works brilliantly. Provides a dead-flat finish. No loss of detail. After I prime, I follow with the Mephiston Red out of the rattlecan, spraying from the top and not worrying if I get complete coverage - the overall effect is to create a bit of pre-shading. GW stopped making the Mephiston Red spray paint, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. It is perfect for getting color on the army, and it matches the bottled Mephiston Red perfectly.

Wet palette with Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz Scarlet, and Blazing Orange (old GW).

Following a wash of Reikland Fleshshade (black or Agrax Earthshade dulls the red), I then use the wet palette to glaze the figures, focusing on the highlights and bringing up the red. The figure on the left is glazed as compared to the one the right that has just been washed.

With the red sorted, I use P3 Thamar Black for the left shoulder pad, the right knee / leg, and the backpack details. I also decided that all the assault marines would have black helmets to distinguish them (the veterans helmets are already painted off white, so this felt like a good choice).

Next, gold. Brass actually, from the Vallejo line. It stays bright even after a few wash coats, and provides a nice base for the gold to follow. The face of the marine has also been glazed with a few coats of Cadian Fleshtone.

Wash applied over the flesh. Still work to be done, but for the table-top standard I'm after, acceptable for now.

The Techmarine gets the same treatment.

As does the Captain in Terminator Armor (kit-bashed from the Marneus Calgar figure - a lot of models in this army are borrowed from other Space Marine Chapters - I think they help it look unique)

3 hours later, job done. Next step will be washes and details, but the goal is to get the entire army to this stage first. Discipline to continue without starting to noodle things will be a challenge.

Thanks for looking. Comments and questions welcome.

Nice step-by-step progress! I use Carroburg Crimson to wash my Blood Angels. Makes them more deep red, which I like.

Keep up the good work!

It will be a test of patience for sure, to paint up the entire army to a certain level before moving on...

So the plan is to then finish off the entrie army in one go also, or will the finishing touches be done unit-per-unit?

Also, if you're going to document the entore project's process; two top-tips:
Use the macro function on your camera
Buy a mini tripod with rigid legs (costs around 10-15 Euro)

Thanks, guys. Meph, appreciate the feedback. My camera is almost exclusively used to shoot video, so a bit of laziness on my part not taking it off the shoulder rig. These shots are from a tripod - better I think. Macro setting (I usually always have it on manual for video work). Let Canon take the wheel on these photos. Some new test shots of the veterans.

The entire group. Meph, to answer your question, this is the first standard I'd like to hit. So, red done, black done, gold done, whites done, then weapons painted, washed and dry-brushed. Save things like gems and purity seals for later (though I couldn't resist a few on this unit), and then a final pass for highlights and bases pushed until the very end. If I could get the entire army to this level in the next six weeks, then I think I should be able to make my goal.

The Sergeant - from the Ultramarines Honor Guard - I just loved the helmet and he is wielding a power axe - second bonus

Heavy Bolter. Both the heavy weapon guys are without helmets - my sense is that they are the most senior of the group and welcome the chance to see, smell and taste the battlefield.

I wasn't sure about the off-white helmets and shoulder pads at first, but now that I've lived with it for a few days, I like it. This scheme is only for the veterans.

My favorite model so far - this figure just encapsulates the entire vibe I want for the army.

Anyway, work beckons for the next few days, but more updates later this week. Thanks for the feedback. All comments and questions welcome.

Cool, great stuff. Love the colour tones and units assembly.
Lol, if we play a game on one table together, people would have a hard time keeping our two forces apart.

Meph, lol. Really love the gritty nature of your army. It proves that you can use bright colors and still achieve a realistic effect, a real trick when the dominant color is red. Thanks again for the feedback. Will be following along on your BA build. More by week's end - hopefully start by purchasing and building the last set of Death Company models.

Lovin' that army, stellar werk! I like the more realistic paint style, was never a fan of that super hot GW edging.
