I'm likely to move house in the next few months and will need to store my miniatures for the move, and may well end up storing some in cases (instead of my glass cabinets) more permanently.

At the moment I'm trying to decide between the GW cases and alternatives (Battlefoam and KR Multicase). I have some older GW ones and a KR and am happy with them, but I need more storage. Honestly I find the options for Battlefoam (and the newer KR site) a bit overwhelming to know where to start. My main issue is that I have some larger models now - such as a Necron Monolith - which are too tall to fit in my old cases. It's not just the monolith as I have some other large models which are too tall (some current GW, some not), although the Monolith is the tallest of the bunch. So, some questions:

1. Does anyone know if the current GW Army case will fit a Necron Monolith? http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Army-Figure-Case

2. If not, could anyone provide a direct link to a Battlefoam, KR Multicase, or other alternative which will?

Thanks!

Honestly if it isn't going to be seeing the light of day for a loooong time just a plastic tub container and some cheap foam or even bubble wrap should keep it safe for a long time

If its actually going to see relatively regular play then im not sure.

the only thing i can think of fitting would be that mega case GW sold for APOC or battle foam.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you have a link to the GW case you mention (if it's not the one I linked above), or to a Battlefoam case which would fit?

(It's more large models than one Monolith; I mention the Monolith because it's the tallest of the bulky models which I have to deal with.)

No more links unfortunately because it was a limited edition thing for the last apoc book.

it would be probably very hard to find but it was a double wide pluck foam hard case.

As for battle foam not sure.

I'll use the monolith as an example:
If you're willing to use 2 pieces of foam (top and bottom), Sabol's bags should work.
http://www.saboldesigns.net/armytransportmarkll.html. Depending on which way you put the monolith, I think you will either need two 4" or 3" high foams inside.

Battlefoam has custom foam for monolith (6" high) http://uk.battlefoam.com/necron-1-new-monolith-2-doomsday-ghost-ark-foam-tray-bf-6/ and but unfortunately, the bags for them are expensive http://uk.battlefoam.com/432-p-a-c-k-432-molle-empty-black/.
If you're willing to use carboard, they do have storage case though http://uk.battlefoam.com/battle-foam-stacker-box-for-battle-foam-size-foam-trays/.

BTW, I have to admit, BF site is not really good about saying what foam goes to which case, as they have at least 4 different sizes of trays (Battlefoam, GW size, SD and Privateer Press) and they aren't always that clear about which foam size goes where....

KR also offers custom foam for monolith http://krmulticase.com/trays.aspx?type=L&system=WH40K&army=NE&d=1, but as it is two tray setup, you need to use KR's double size Aluminium cases (or larger) to transport them. Unfortunately because of how KR site is done, I cannot give direct link from their site, but here is one from Wayland http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/kr-multicase/kr-cases/aluminium-cases/double-aluminum-case-silver/prod_26149.html

As far as quality goes, I think KR is superior to Sabol (own both of them) but I have no personal experience with Battlefoam:
It looks really nice and people have had good experiences with the foam (but be warned, apparently custom foam can take long time to be done), but last time I checked KR was around 50% cheaper than BF for same amount of miniature storage, but there are caveats:
Problem is that the comparisons are not always apples to apples: For example, the BF custom foam does cost 37% more than KR one, but does offer space for two more Ghost Arks. Another problem is that KR custom foam becomes lot cheaper when you buy it by the case. Which unfortunately means that only way to do proper comparison between those two are to check exactly what you need and then calculate what it would cost to get....

tl;dr version: Both BF and KR do have what you need. I wouldn't use GW cases, as they're pretty expensive for what they offer and are not large enough for big models. I'd personally use KR or BF over Sabol, but YMMV.

Thanks for the tips and links! I will dig in and search some more.

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

I have GW cases and several Battlefoam cases - Battlefoam is durable, but Monoliths are so large and clunky. ><

For my moves (several of them) I've wrapped my monoliths in bubble-wrap, nestled them together in cardboard boxes, and added bubble wrap for any extra wiggle room. It's a $3 solution, but my monoliths have been it through 4 years of moving cross country once a year without any damage.

They pop up on Ebay every couple of weeks. Only real issue is that I typically see them going for around 300-500 dollars.

You'd have to check the measurements, but IIRC, a Monolith will fit pretty well in a Plano "Protector 4 Pistol Case". Just cut the foam to the shape you want and you've got an affordable (12 bucks with foam!) hard-sided case for your Monolith(s).

I've got a big how-to for converting the cases for minis, but you probably won't need all that for converting this for a monolith. here it is anyway.

It will be very close, monolith is around 6" square from bottom and 8" tall, and the Plano case is 6" wide, but I'm not sure if it's inside our outside measurement.
If inside, Monolith might just fit, but if it is outside then not.

But I have to admit, those Plano cases are good value for your money.

I'm pretty sure It is the interior measurements, but then you'd still have it pushing against the plastic with no room for foam. However if you tipped it on it's side, you should be able to buy yourself a half inch or so, which would be enough to put a bit of foam. Perhaps some funky foam (EVA sheet) from the craft store. would help?

Best of luck whatever you decide.

Thanks for the suggestion, Eilif. Those are pretty cheap compared to the other options!

No problem,
Like I said, I don't know for sure if it will work, but you can always return stuff you order from WalMart to the store, so it might be worth a shot. Especially since it's a fine case for holding basic foot minis anyway even before modification.

Hope it works out.
