Hey guys, recently started WH40k in the last few months and have been painting where I can, very new to it all but figured I should start a painting blog to document my progress and for all you experienced painters to hopefully offer some pointers/advice.
I'll post what I've done in the order I've painted them.. Hopefully you can see I've made some progress! Just be warned my painting is nowhere near the quality of most of the other blogs posted here unfortunately

In regards to the theme, I like choosing a theme that isn't very common and loved the fluff of Mymeara Eldar (and love snow basing over the other types). I'm also trying to keep the army mostly aspect warriors, with very little wraith constructs / vehicles, while still having a semi-competitive army. (However I couldn't resist getting a Wraithknight)

Critiques, comments and pointers all very much appreciated!

EDIT:

Will be mostly Undead legions now as I mainly play fantasy now and am loving it!

EDIT:

Switched to Bretonnians, for better or worse we'll find out next edition I suppose :/ But I love the models and idea behind them.

Update on Karandras. Pretty much done just need to base him. Though I'm not too happy with the chain sword and might repaint it..

Karandras looks great and I have to agree with you about the sword. But even just a block highlight on the body of the sword in the original color would clean that right up.

Thanks! But what exactly is a 'block' highlight?

Well, your GS skills are 100x better than mine! And your snow basing is impressive, too. I've tried snow basing once or twice, unfortunately it wasn't up to the same standard as yours.

I like the freehand on the back on the Warp Spiders. Maybe you could try some freehand symbols or patterns on the front of the jetbikes - theyir lack of detail makes them look even more bland.

Out of curiosity, do you use an airbrush?

He mentioned the airbrush, but your hand painting skills look really good, at least. For the jetbikes I would recommend either freehand airbrushing or even masking straight lines off to add color... decals are also an option.

It looks great, I was considering this theme myself, but I also like my current Iyanden look.

Great job

Thanks, yeah I love snow basing! My friend who started with me plays Space Wolves so our theme fits together nicely too.

I'm a little wary to try freehand on the jetbikes as I have used an airbrush to get the colour on them.. So if I make a mistake it will be very hard to touch up

But yes, I have an airbrush that I used for my jetbikes, wave serpents and wraithknight, and have started using it to basecoat some models to save time (and the thin coat is nice). Though my airbrush is just a cheapie, looking to get a better one soon.

EDIT: Just saw your blog, your eldar is looking sweet! How do you manage to do that Hex effect on your vyper? Is it a stencil or something or are you just that talented? Haha

Ahh my airbrush isn't very good so freehand airbrushing probably isn't an option until I get a better one, I have considered masking shapes like chevrons or something into them though just to break it up a bit

I did consider Iyanden, but pretty much everyone at my LGS seems to use Iyanden colours for their Eldar so I steered away from it, and I also prefer the fluff of aspect warriors to wraith constructs.. I want to get the shadow spectres & phoenix lord from forgeworld sometime soon for my Mymeara

Thanks, pretty happy with Karandras! (except the sword :/ ).. Have Maugan Ra, Jain Zar, Illic Nightspear and Fuegan all to paint before next Saturday though which might be a stretch

Thanks for taking a look at my blog
The hex pattern is all stencil, and minimal talent

Chevrons would work on the jetbikes, kind of Siam-Hann style. Alternatively, the Mymeara scheme is a blue faded to a green IIRC. You could try that on the jetbikes. It's quite easy to do with an airbrush.

Ahh then there's hope for me yet! Where do you get your stencils?

Yeah I might try a bit of a fade and see how it goes.. Though my Farseer is glued down so I won't be airbrushing his bike unfortunately haha

Anarchymodels.co.uk is where my stencils are from.

Can you not just cover your seer while you airbrush the bike? Use masking tape or blue tac

I guess that'd probably be the smartest idea haha. I might revisit him once I've finished my HQ kill team.

Speaking of which, heres some WIP of Fuegan and Maugan Ra
Fuegan is pretty much done, just might do some touch ups, namely on the gun & cables as I think they're a bit messy. I'm pretty happy with how the armour turned out, though the lines on the helmet could have been better I think..
I tried to make the base almost look 'burnt' where his feet are but im not sure if you can even tell. Does anyone know how to make snow take on a burnt/ashen look btw?

Also, not a huge fan of painting metal.. Paint doesn't seem to stick as well though it might be something I'm doing wrong I guess.

P.s Had my first casualty yesterday.. Took my army down to the LGS for a game and the wing/stick things on the back of my Wraithknight broke All glued back together now but its still pretty annoying. What do you guys use to cart around your bigger models? My wraithknight I just carry a round in a plastic bag when I need to take him somewhere.. :/

[Thumb - IMG_2177.JPG]
Probably shouldve waited for him to glue before taking this..

Finished Maugan Ra, not entire happily with him as I think I rushed him a little. Not sure if I like the 'runes' I painted onto his loincloth either. Thoughts?

I am however pretty happy with how his weapon turned out

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should paint Illic Nightspear btw? I was thinking of painting him like my ranger (in mymeara colours) as I'm not a huge fan of Alaitoc colours..

Update on my eldar. finished Jain Zar & my kill team (decided to run my farseer with the kill team rather than Illic as I think it'll be a bit more competitive) Will paint illic later down the track.

Not really happy with Jain Zar at all unfortunately but oh well. I hate painting whites & blacks! :(

Was convinced to start fantasy again and actually start building my VC's (bought a batallion a long time ago)

Always loved the Vargheist models so picked up a box and painted my first one.. Pretty happy with how it turned out, but not sure whether I should highlight the skin a little brighter

This is amazing. So great to see some fantasy traffic on here too.

Vampire Counts have always been an army of interest of mine, this is certainly peaking that interest. Particularly like the banner, interested to see how it turns out.
