So I've decided to give Warmachine a go and I really, really dig the Hyperion model. Kinda set on him as I for some reason think he looks really friggen cool. Problem is I don't know much about him and was wondering what a good starter list including him would be. I do not know the rules (getting rulebook soon so bear with me) or anything so I'm having difficulty selecting units to put with him. Going to play this game pretty casual, but i don't want to lose every game either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I too rather like the Hyperion model, however colossal are not usually a good starting point.

Starter games usually occur at a battlebox (about 12 pts) to 15 point level. Hyperion at 20 points would be the entirety of your list. Starting at a small level and then adding Hyperion would be a better idea.

There are three Warcasters whose spells and feats would be affective with Hyperion, Ravyn, Ossyan, and pVyros. Check out Battlecollege for the write up on the synergies. http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/Hyperion

You could build good 12-15 point lists around any of these.

I.E. The alternate Journeyman league battle box for Ret is Ossyan, Sphinx and Banshee for 11 points. Add Arcanists to support your jacks and Mage Hunter Assassin to round out your 15 points. Ossyan's feat gives extra dice on Range attacks and would be a good one to use Hyperion under.

Yeah Hyperion is awesome (looks good and is effective in game as well), but if you are just starting out then running some normal jacks and infantry to get your head around the mechanics is definitely a better bet. I would normally only consider a Colossal at 35pts or higher, otherwise they are literally the only thing in your list. Since Colosals are a big investment I would suggest starting with the standard battle box + a unit (probably Strike Force so you can understand why everyone hates facing them) and working your way up to the big guy when you start playing slightly larger games. This game is great and works well as a casual game, but even still be aware that you will lose a heap of games when you are just starting out, I think I lost something like 20 games in a row when I started until I got my head around everything and now win far more than I lose.

Ossyan or pVyros do not normally run Hyperion. Ossyan can give him Shatterstorm for some more infantry removal but most of the time his feat is overkill on a POW18 main cannon. pVyros much prefers multiple heavies to get better use out of his feat - the coolest thing you get with him is Birds Eye, which lets you drop that 5" plate in much better spots. The two casters that normally run Hyperion are Ravyn and Issyria. Ravyn gives it Snipe, which extends the range of the main gun out to 14" - which importantly is longer than most charge ranges. Her feat also helps - you get a better chance of the Crit on the main gun and will generally just clear out infantry. Issyria also loves Hyperion, she doesn't increase its range but she does give you a second shot with main gun - which is a terrifying amount of infantry removal. She can also give it an ARM buff and when sitting behind it can cancel spells cast on it (debuff spells are normally how you kill Colossals). She also enjoys just having a huge base model in front of her to keep her alive.
Of these two I would suggest getting Rayvn + the Battlebox + Strike Force + maybe some solos as a starting point. Issyria is good but is our squishiest caster and has no damage output herself (no weapons or damage spells) so is terrible at low point levels. This gives you two casters to try out (Rayvn + Kaelyssa) some decent jacks and a unit to get you up to the 25pt level.

Ravyn would be my suggested caster for devoting yourself to Hyperion. I would not suggest starting with a colossal or at 50 points but if you want an end goal with maximum hyperion use then something like this would be interesting.

Ravyn, Eternal Light (*6pts)
* Hyperion (18pts)
* Hyperion (18pts)
Mage Hunter Strikeforce (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Mage Hunter Commander (2pts)
Stormfall Archers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (5pts)
Arcanist (1pts)
Arcanist (1pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)

I am not much of a ret player but I have tried a similar list to this with proxies and the two colossals were quite a threat. They scared off my opponent until he could make a decisive scenario play.
