Just thought I'd open this topic...

As everyone's near certainly noticed, the Space Marines have...a billion and one different variants - from Grey Knights to Space Wolves to the Legion of the Damned - never mind the fact that only the "vanilla" Space Marines have chapter-specific doctrines that allow one chapter to play quite differently from another. Likewise, while not quite as impressive, the Imperial Guard at least have Militarum Tempestus (and if you include Forge World - DKOK and Elysian Drop Troops as well). Meanwhile, everyone else don't get quite the same level of love and development.

In that respect, what does everyone think? Should GW create a new variant (be it as a supplement or as its own codex) for one of the existing armies? If so, how should it play?

Perhaps purple-coloured Orks who use sneakiness to close in on the enemy instead of an endless tide of green? Or perhaps highly psychic ones running around; wielding Force Weapons?

Alternatively, maybe an elite, Grey Knight equivalent for the Chaos Space Marines? Though, that might come of as yet another Space Marine variant...

Anyway, thoughts?

Borrow whoever is writing the very good and characterful legion rules for the HH books over at FW and do the 40k Chaos Legions justice.

I personally would like to see more of the Craftworlds as supplements, or possibly a Corsair variant or Exodite variant.

Tyranids really wouldn't benefit from a Variant, but I would like to see some more options.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'm with the csm crowd. There is so much fluff available to do legions justice they would be amazing... But I am biased.

Armies like eldar would be good too, except expanding on a craft world basis leaves say samhann (sp) etc being the focus.

CSM 20,000 Pts
Daemons 4,000 (ish)
WoC over 10,000
6000+ Pts

You can pick multiple options.

Though in hindsight, I probably should've added a "none of the above" option. **FIXED**

The Impirial guard also have the Catachans, Armagedon Steel Legion, Cadians, Tallarn desert raiders, Mordian Iron Guard, Valhallan Ice Warriors, Vostroyan firstborn.

though for the exeption of the Catachans and Cadians. All of the others are pretty much OOP with Vostroyan firstborn being a recent addition. Though there are options for some very good 3rd party models most of the others that have gone OOP from GW.

edit...nm most of them are still available they are just direct order from GW. The 3rd party options are still much better options though because many will be in plastic/resin.

A new, even-more-knightly version of Space Marines.

(Even though this is not an option, it is the most likely )

...Now, that being said, I think CSM are ripe for a new variant. They are still Space Marines, so they sell well, but CSM have been chronically undersupported compared to their loyalist counterparts.

You mean dark angels, except with non-crappy rules? they are basically "knights of the round table marines", except as mentioned-horribly overpriced/underpowered.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

I think Codex Suppliments and Dataslates complicate this a fair bit. With those we've seen varients developed beyond mere story elements for Tau, Eldar, Tyranids, Orks, Space Marines and Space Wolves in the recent past.

Now on a second though, I voted CSM, but I should have voted tau too.

Not the tau race itself, but the extended empire needs to be delved into, there are multiple races in the fluff that are part of the tau army, but don't even have a single unit to call their own.

Nicassar and tarellian at the very least. these two are from the oldest members of the empire, and have the most fluff related to them.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

CSM deserves a bit more, also voted demons.

Tau are fine where they're at, perhaps in something besides 40k they should be delved into more, like Battlefleet Gothic. EDIT: what am I talkin about that was dropped years ago.

No more variants or new armies until GW can figure out how to make rulebooks that aren't garbage. The last thing we need right now is even more garbage to buy and keep track of.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
