A peek at eleven force diagrams (7 German, 4 Soviet)

Details on the new releases:

What new releases can you expect?:
• New sculpts for the Panzer III G/H and J, and Panzer IV E and F 1/2
• A new extended range of German Greatcoat infantry for Early and Mid War.
• The ZIS-30 - a Zis-2 57mm gun mounted on a Komsomolyets!
• A plastic and resin Early War T-34.
• Updated sculpts for the KV series of heavy tanks.
• BM-8 Katyusha option included with the BM-13 Katyusha box

Looks like there's no new plastic kits for Barbarossa

It will be nice to see what the resculpted Panzers look like, but they'll have to be pretty special to beat PSC's models (and especially the price).

They're counting putting the plastic T-34/SU accessory sprue in the T-34 blister as a new release?

New resin Panzer IV F1s (I assume it's a combined blister because IIRC F2s debut in 1942) just make BF's rushed plastic panzer IV kit look like even more of a missed opportunity.

Considering they were decrying the difficulties they're having with the sheer number of SKUs they have they don't seem to be doing much about it.

The SKU means it's a box and not a blister. I'm not familiar with the T-34, but it could be a resin addition to the plastic T-34 kit or a box of the existing T-34 obr 1941 which already has the plastic tracks.

The T-34 accessory sprue that comes with the SU Tank Killer plastic box (and the T-34 plastic box) has the turret hatch, mantlet, gun and fuel tanks for the T-34 obr 41. The current T-34 obr 41 model has different wheels (they're spoked) to the later T-34s and SUs I have yet to see those tracks in plastic. Maybe that's the change.

While I'm on this particular subject of missed opportunities. For the life of me I can't understand why Battlefront didn't put an SU-122 mantlet and barrel on the the SU sprue.

They actually have two different T-34 obr 1941. The one I linked to above that says that it uses plastic components and the Stalingrad T-34 obr 1941 that has the spoked wheels.

In which case there are three, there's also the T-34 obr 41 (extra armour). Still it's likely just a repack of the existing T-34 obr 41 with existing plastic parts. It doesn't stop them releasing a plastic T-34 obr 41 next year.

That said, it's labelled as obr 40 and 41. The obr 40 has a different gun/mantlet and probably engine hatch (I'm not sure which one the 41 should have) to the obr 41 (the Zvesda T-34 is an obr 40) and it's not on the existing sprue.

I spy SMG teams. I'm happy.

All I need is some new tanks and my late (late) war Soviet army is good to go for early war.

The KV1e is a little lackluster as a sculpt an the other two are available from Zvesda.

After looking at the detail on the PSC Marder the sculpting is very disappointing

Looks accurate to me. It's not like the sculptor has free reign to add bling to the model to jazz it up. I find most World War II Soviet tanks to look a little on the plain side.

Look harder at the picture you posted. See the additional armour plates that are on the upper hull (front and side) of the KV-1e you posted but not on the BF model.

Just below the square turret plate there are extra plates bolted to the side of the hull, between the ridges on the armour above the track. The -1 in the background doesn't have them, and the BF model is just their KV-1 with the -1e turret on it instead.

They're pretty hard to recognize, even after you've spotted them once.

Look for the second ridge (?) from the front (i.e. one of the slanted pieces running out from the main hull over the tracks). There's a dark shadow where it disappears between two of the armor plates. That shadow is from the second plate.

There's also a half-sphere on the front of the tank that's not present on the model, and the model has something near where the hemisphere should be that's not on the actual tank. Though given that I'm not sure what either item is, it's possible that they were only present on some tanks.

Better side shot image of the same tank, the plates and bolts are clearly visible.

I used Bing to pull up a bunch of images of KV-1e tanks. First, I'll note that the half-sphere thing that's on the front of the captured Finnish tank only seems to appear on the captured Finnish tank. So while I'm still not sure what it is, leaving it off of the BF model is probably the correct move. Second, the bolted armor on the side of the tank only seems to appear in about half the photos. Admittedly, some of the photos are of such poor quality that it's impossible to tell whether the armor is there or not. But of the photos that seem to be of a reasonable quality, a number of them don't seem to show the bolted on side plates for the hull, while still showing on the bolted armor plates for the turret.

So it would appear that the best option would be if Battlefront made the bolted side hull armor an option available with the tank so that the modeler could decide whether or not to show it.

From what I can find on a quick Google about as many -1es have the extra plates as do not, so having them as optional additions would be the best course of action and allow for players who want to perhaps try the -1e out by using the turret on -1 hull without the plates before choosing either way.

Personally, I think the hull plates make it look better and less like someone stuck a -1e turret on a -1 hull and called it a -1e; it actually looks more deserving of the extra armour stats.

So the turrets are resin. That's a bit of a surprise. There's no mention of metal components in the contents list, though - unless they're referring to the magnets?

Edit - Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but...

The contents list states that the turrets are resin. But the plastic sprue appears to show turrets.

Huh?

I imagine it's the guns that are metal.

I considered that, but one of the plastic sprues shows gun barrels.

I'm starting to suspect that these are basically just three of the regular plastic T-34s with extra parts included.

Looks like the turrets are resin and the obr 40 mantlet and gun is metal, probably the crew as well unless they've finished the plastic Soviet crew.

Bit of a lazy kit though, the transmission hatch is the wrong shape.

The plastic sprue with the gun barrels is the T-34 components sprue. As you can see in the following pic, the barrels are for the T-34 obr 1942, T-34/85 obr 1944 and the T-34/57.

Same with the turrets on the other plastic sprue.

So yeah, it looks like my guess was correct. It's basically a "build whichever three T-34s you want" box. The resin and metal components are there to allow you to build the EW-specific versions.

Nope, you misunderstood me. There are three T-34s in the box, which is what my reference was to.

So you can build any three of the various Soviet T-34s that Battlefront has done.
