So I want to dip my toes into WHFB after playing a bit of WH40k, and I’d decide that I’ll take the new Undead Legion for a spin.
My plan is to first by the VC Battalion and turn it into the above list.

I’ll admit it is a bit top heavy (I was debating for some time whether or not to have the necromancer ride the corpse cart) but I need a powerful necromancer as the engine to my war machine.

My primary tactic is to have a 10*2 wall of ghouls and a corpse cart to form the tip of the spear. A well placed Vanhel's Dance Macabre and Invocation of Nehek can turn my ghouls into a maximum of 40 poisoned, always striking first, rerolling to hit attacks. Granted in most cases I’m never going to have to use all 40 attacks, and I can always switch to a 5*4 bus at the last minute on deployment.
Behind my wall will be my necromancer supporting a unit of skeleton warriors. While the Ghouls tie up the front lines, I’ll use Master of the Undead to slowly build up my skeletons into a decent sized army to blindside whatever’s left of my opponent when they finally thin through my ghouls.

Any advice helps.

Well its good to see that someone wants to get into fantasy. Firstly I'd like to point out that 500 points is an EXTREMLY small size for a fantasy game. I say 1000 is a minimum but 750 is doable.

I would use more skeletons 10 is such a small unit it won't do anything. Even when you boost their numbers.

You should check out mantic games they have undead that are nicer skeletons and ghouls for far cheaper (like waaaaay cheaper).
That way you can play a decent sized game for less money.
