If starting Flames of War what's the best rules to buy? I've seen a huge hardback book that's over £30 and then the Open Fire box that's full of models which seems a great buy for about £45. There are a lot of supplements and references to both a 2nd and 3rd edition. The periods I'm mostly interested in playing are around D-Day and Battle for Berlin. Which books cover those and are compatible? As I live in London I'm wondering if there are groups here that play. I usually go to Dark Sphere for things but there's very little Flames of War events despite carrying a good range of models.

In regards to the mini rulebook from the open fire box, the two I have fell apart after a day or too without much use, I still mean to get a comb binding on them. The mini rulebook is also missing a couple of rules from the brb (fortifications and city fighting I think).

Used to shop with Dark Sphere, good store. I prefer Element games, better postage prices, and loyalty points.

Getting the mini rulebook spiral bound is a must and relatively cheap. The V3 mini rulebook in the current Open Fire is a complete rulebook.

Open Fire is best value if you plan to play German Grenadiers, US Paras or British Armour. Ideally you will want to offload the army you aren't using to a friend.

As for army lists, Atlantik Wall (Germans) and Overlord (US & UK) are for D-Day. There isn't yet a Battle for Berlin Book planned for release. I'd wait on the rulebooks a while as there's about to be a big digital change with the books. I'd check out the free lists on BF's site and Easy Army (hold off paying for easy army lists at the moment).

In before someone comes along to tell you to play a different game or scale.

Can you even buy Open Fire anymore? I tried finding it online and it was mostly "out of stock", even on the official store it was listed as not available.

A bit late for changing as I've already bought done things like my Cromwell platoon.

I've also bought a set of DD Shermans and some other British bits. I like the scale too, I've been looking at Peter Pig for a Maus and infra-red Panther tanks.

Yea, the mini rulebook will start to fall apart if you open the pages flat. I'm reduced to reading mine without bending the spine, which is a bit awkward. Many people get them bound.

The rules for the game itself are very strong and the models are mostly nice. Get open fire if you're interested in any of the minis. It's good value.

If not hit up easy army and build a list (though many of the free book's lists aren't that great, so once you decide on an army/period, find the best book that supports that period and fork out the 2 dollars.

The cost to play FOW is considerably less then GW, though some lists are a lot cheaper then others. The models aren't really cheaper, though its much cheaper to get to a widely accepted playable points value. (for example, by just running tiger tanks)

+ all you really need is the mini rule book or big hardcover rulebook and an easy army list.... No 80 dollar codexes...

Not to mention the changeover from Easy Army to Forces of War and the discontinuation of Easy Army sometime early next year.

I'm not saying don't buy the books, I'm just saying that they aren't necessary to experiment with lists and play the game.

@ GHAZ, yea forgot about that, but I still don't think we'll be paying 80 dollars for lists some how....

Buy used on ebay or find some of the pdf books for free.Battlefront has some and so does other sites and blogs.
But if you buy the HArdback set it does include a GEneric Forces book for the NAtions.
When i started playing i bought the HB and the now Discontinued Fortress europe Book on Bartertown for 30 bucks.I am on in your boat though the HB i think are a bit pricey. So i Troll the ebay and the Swap shop forums.I would even place a want ad on btown that is how i got mine.
Rite now you can get the rulebook used for 30 bucks

I got my goodies from Peter Pig this morning, they look great. I'll be interested to compare them to Battlefront things. The Panthers look nice with crew and the IR lights.

The Maus was less impressive, I hoped it would not come attached to a base but it was and as a solid casting has no undercut underneath the tank. Also the turret ring is too wide for the turret leaving it slack. On the other hand, the majority of the vehicle visible with the eye is sharp and crisp looking and its a beast of a vehicle for just £8.

Looks like Pig's changed the cast for the Maus. Mine came with seperate metal tracks.

I also bought the Panther with the VAmpyr system on it .To use as a Tank ace.I also was a tad dissappointed with it being that multi part. I had to do alot of work and still mounted it on base to keep it stable.Unless it is a Niche Vehicle.I would recomend the Classic BF resin and metal vehicles
multi part plastics are nice, but i am still a fan of resisn and Metal .Which was one of the first things that impressed me with BF models. One of my first purchases was the BF Barkman set and some old GLory KTs.
