Hi folks,

Very pleased to say that the mighty Hephaestus is going to become available via pre-order from this Friday! He's the first figure from my new long term 'Odyssey' project, and he's been magnificently sculpted by Robby Crawforth from concept art by Roberto Cirillo
This is what you need to know I think:

He's a big chap...

Friday's the big day - so pop along to www.joekminis.com on the 17th October where you'll be able to see more photos, plus pre-order the big guy

Cheers folks!

Joe

Wow, from the Beasts of War preview I didn't realise he was that big! I think I have read he is 75mm tall Jehan-reznor

Love the aesthetics of this guy, think he would make a great mini to use as a final boss for a dungeon crawling game. Can imagine some kind of grey-tone skin with brass and gold for the really ornate looking armour.

He looks like one of the promised minis from Torn Armor. Only real.

Very cool.

Yup, he measures approx 72mm from hump to bottom, but his hammer is a bit bigger obviously

Would you consider offering alternate heads? A more time-generic or more evil-looking head (or both!) without the Roman crest could make this model usable for many more armies! Such as chaos dwarfs, heck even a Salamanders counts-as ironclad dreadnought! But the head alone keeps it from being appropriate for these alternate uses.

Here's a quick pic of one of Mantic's abyssal golems- nowhere near the sculpt this is, but with a head that works for other things:

Spoiler:

You don't even have to have the same sculptor make alternate heads. If you do make a "less Roman" head or heads, even as an add-on, I would totally buy this! And you would broaden your market greatly

I actually think the existing head would suit Chaos Dwarves/evil armies pretty well; the crest after all is a pretty generic addition to a helm, and if you did an appropriate paint-job with the armour (dark coloured, or even 'golem' style of having lava visible from behind the metal) think that could work pretty well..

All just my opinion of course!

The head is completely separate from the body so easy to convert if you wanted. I doubt I'll ever do this myself because Heph is a very distinct character for the range!

Ah, if it's completely separate you're right, easy enough to convert . Tempted to get one now... I guess I've got 4 weeks to decide!

Man, I'm tempted by this beast; he looks pretty awesome!

Has there been any hints dropped concerning what may be coming next in this Odyssey series?

I haven't given much away, mainly because I wasn't sure. I've actually got a lot of characters sketched out with backgrounds, but it's a case of putting my (and my co-writer) thoughts onto a piece of paper and getting the concept art done.

However, the next piece *is* underway.

I think Heph needs someone to fight against in a kind of 'good' v' 'evil' face off...and that's as much as you're gonna get from me :p

Ares would be a PERFECT foil for Hephaestus - you know, the whole Aphrodite thing!

How could you miss it?!?!?

OK then...

Hades?

Well, the thing is that the Odyssey universe might be linked to the Greek Myths, but it doesn't necessarily remain the same.

Over the next few months more will become a little clearer I think, but safe to say that whilst the gods are still rather fluid with their moods and loyalties and their interest in humanity they are really really not what they said on the old Greek Myth tins of baked beans...

Oh, and in the Odyssey world, Hades is dead.

Really, really dead.

But, in his death he's led to a whole faction of beings being thrust into existance. And they're gonna be cool.

Well, they will be when I've worked out what they look like

Well, this little story gives you some hints about the next character...although I've covered up the name, you might find a clue here and there I guess

Hmmm, I guessed Perses on the Facebook, but that was evidently wrong... A bit stumped on this one; I'm no Greek myth expert. Could it be one of the semi-mortal heroes, like Achilles?

What's the plan for your game system?

A KS launch?

Straight to 'retail' via your own webstore?

Do I buy Hephaestus now, or wait?

Thanks!

The game won't be around for quite a while Alpharius. I have a very basic idea of how I want the game to work, but it will involve an awful lot of research before I'm at that stage. The background and characters are my main focus at the moment and building up some sort of reason for everything to exist. Ideally, these pre-order launches are a way to fund a base amount of figures so I actually have working examples for the eventual game. It'll be only at that point that I'd even think of going to Kickstarter. In essence, what you're seeing in these figures are my proof of concept. There are so many figures we've already got ideas for, and a huge amount of other things that I want to do that the only way I could do it is by a crowd funding scheme I think!

The best thing that anyone who likes the figure and is intrigued by Odyssey is to pick one up now (whilst it's cheaper) really! The more I get in these four weeks, the quicker I can get the art done and the figures worked on!

But even if folk don't have the funds (which I can completely understand), sharing the info and the pics would be fantastic too!

Before the end of this 4 week pre-order period, I will have the finalised concept art for the intended next figure, plus a couple more short stories, and after this I'll be going into more and more background detail!

So far there are 4 very distinct 'factions', and I'm hoping that there will be something to please everyone...finger's crossed :p

That kind of worries me, as I don't have a Japanese retailer!

Although - I did have someone purchase one who was from Japan, so I'm going to hope that it's him!

Admittedly, since none of them have gone out yet, the chances are they'd have to be an astonisingly good recaster to do this sort of thing from photos :p
