So i recently came across a deal to good to pass up. For 160 dollars canadian, i received
60x Fire warriors,
20x Pathfinders
12x Crisis Suits
12x Stealth Suits
30x Drones
3x Devil Fish
3x Hammer head
3x Broadside

I have never played tau, so i am completely lost at where to go from here, I was hoping dakka could help me throw together a list that utilizes what i have.

You do have the codex right, Start by reading

Now for serious help, you can build lists with that. You can do some evil with 6 squads of 10 FW, 3 squads of 10 Gundrones, and ethereal in a fish (which is the next model I would suggest getting)

How are the suits armed? same for broadsides?

That is a great deal - only problem is you don't seem to have any HQ units - are your gaming club ok with you proxying? If so great, as you can get away with a crisis as a commander and a helmetless firewarrior as a fireblade. Otherwise first thing you are going to have to do is buy some more models

Short for Devilfish. That something else is probably a Plasma rifles. So sounds like 6 Deathrain and 6 Helios builds, older suits, with the new style Broadsides. Good start you can do either a Farsight Enclave style list or a standard Tau empire list.

For an FE list:

HQ:
1 Deathrain 115
1 Deathrain 115

elite
6 Stealth w/6 Burst Cannon,6 Counterfire Defense Systems, bonding knife 216
6 Stealth w/ 6 Burst Cannon,6 Counterfire Defense Systems, bonding knife 216

Troop
3 helios w/bonding knife 159
3 helios w/bonding knife 159
2 deathrain w/bonding knife106
2 deathrain w/ bonding knife106

Hvy
3 broadside w/ EWO 213
1 HammerHead w/submuntion,D-pod,Blacksun filter, sensor spines, sms 151
1 HammerHead w/submuntion,D-pod,longstrike, sensor spines,sms195

Actually rather like this list. I might swap the longstrike to an Ionhead for closer support and an AP2 pie plate. Losing any model is going to hurt ,but you have alot of options to make things difficult. Helios for heavy armor and MC's, Deathrain's for transports, high toughness units, stealth blobs for volume anti-infantry, Broadsides for intercept and support, Railside for the AV14, and infantry pieplates, IonHead with Longstrike for help in overwatch and AP2 in the IonHead or scare russ walls in the railhead.

For a Tau Empire list, I would go mechanized infantry.

Hq:
Commander w/Missle pods,PEN,MSS, iridum 175

Elite:
2 Helios 104
2 Heilos 104
2 Heilos 104

Troops
12 FW w/Fish(SMS, Point Defense,DP,SS) 208
12 FW w/Fish(SMS, Point Defense,DP,SS) 208
12 FW w/Fish(SMS, Point Defense,DP,SS) 208

Fast
5 Pathfinders 44
5 pathfinders 44
5 pathfinders 44

Hvy
3 Broadsides w/EWO 210
1 Hammerhead w/Longstrike, Dpod,submunition, sensor spines, sms 195 (or IonHead at 190)

Fortification
Ageis w/quad gun 100pts

This is a very mobile tau list with a pretty tough firebase made of the Broadsides and HH behind the ageis backing it up. You have 3 Fish Of Fury for 6 OS units with lots of overwatch and supporting fire. 3 Pathfinder teams to give you 3 angles for markerlights and make it a little harder to take them all out at once, but the list itself does not rely on them. 3 Missilesides with a buffmander for Ignores cover fun and tank/monster hunter. Longstrike to provide suppression fire and help keep Assaulters off the broadsides. Finaly 3 suit squads to hunt down MC's and av14.

This is just 2 pretty fun straight forward Maelstrom freindly builds off the top of the head.

As long as the Command suit has a white head most place won't notice or care since that is the traditional designation for tau.

First list does not need the marklights really, and the second has 15. As for Drones I did not really see a need or have the points to use them in either list.

You have a good 3000+ pts worth of models, there is alot you can build with it. I can make you alist that uses all 30 easy and still be effective. Were all 30 build as Gun drones?

I have a question, how many marker lights is enough for a 1750pts list?

You FE list is illegal, you need to have a team of three crisis suits for it to be legal.

Good Catch. I had it that way at first then spilt the Helios forgetting it was an FE list. Merge the Helios in to 2 squads to get back legal.

None is enough, the really question is how many is too many. And to be honest 15 is getting there, but since all 15 are Pathfinders, the redundancy is kinda needed.

id say its about 15 gun, 15 marker.

I'm looking for something thats simple and can hold its own to start with. Farsight enclave as good as it is seems a little complex for right now.

also, could someone give me a 7th ed breakdown of the different crisis suit builds and whats in them, i can only find stuff from fifth.

Farsight Enclave is the coolest brand of Tau IMHO, and not really any harder to use than Empire Tau.

Most common themes I see in Crisis Suit Load outs are thus:

3x Suits with 2 missile pods each
--puts out respectable mobile dakka. Makes good use of JsJ tactics, threatens light armor, MEQ, and some MC's

3x Suits with 2 Burst Cannons each, Gun drones to taste
--Excellent horde control, good at MEQ duties too, go for Burst Cannon/TL Burst Cannon if you've got a few points to spend

2x Suits with 2 Plasma Rifles
--Murders TEQ

1-2x Suits with 2 Fusion Blasters
--Deep strike near armor. Probably Tau's best answer to AV14

Mixing weapons is generally not advised as you have the tools and mobility to deal with just about anything. Specializing and playing accordingly with each unit will get you much further. What builds you want to take really just depends on what the rest of your list is comprised of.
