Hey guys, I've been playing using a space marine list and I'd like to try an army that doesn't have so much force concentration. So I decided I'd try to start building tyranids or orks, I'm just not sure which I'd like better, which would be more fun, and which would be semi-competitive (after all, I'd rather not just get rolled in the friendly games I usually play). Thanks in advance!

Both are low on the competitive scale, I think orks might be a little higher than nids are with power.

Go for orks. Because green is best!

On a more serious note, orks are pretty good right now, they're not a power army, but they're alright. Nids are similar, from what I hear.

I could be wrong but, from what little I know of nids (I don't play 'em) they're better as a shooty horde than a charging horde. I could be wrong though!

Which you will think is more fun is an aesthetic choice. Without more information, we can't really help you.

I suppose you'll just have to ask yourself whether or not you like fightin and winnin.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Well I'd probably be happier with a shooty horde because of the way this edition is, plus the fact that my main opponents are tau, necrons, and grey knights.

Orks, because plastic glued to shoeboxes are easier conversion models than taxidermied insects.

Nids can get a ridicules amount of shooty too though

Devilgauts or whatever they are called surprised me with the dumb amount of shooting they had

Also the amount of dakka from Nidzilla was strange too.

But green is best.

Well, orks can be pretty shooty too. I mean, we came up with dakka, so go figure!

Do you prefer the organic look of the tyranids or the more cobbled together ork stuff? That's the big question now I think.

I prefer the tyranid looks honestly, I like the ork fluff and their general demeanor, and I actually have a friend who has about 1k worth of ork stuff and the new codex who's willing to get rid of them for cheap, but I really just want an army that I can put a ton of infantry on the table and still be somewhat effective, like the tyranid blob with venomthrope (just something I saw in a video).

I see! If you prefer the tyranids look-wise, you should go with them. You'll be spending a lot of time assembling, painting and playing with this army, so it helps if you like the look of it.

The bugs are a lot of fun to build, paint and play, there's a surprising amount of variety and paint schemes to do.

Shooty is easy and effective, too. Dakkafexes are fantastic.

30 boyz with shootas in one squad. 60 Shots. All of the dakka.

I woud ask you 2 questions but you already prefer the Tyranid aestetics over the orc, so that answers the first question.

The 2nd question I would ask you is, as for support towards your foot horde of choice, do you prefer Monsterous Creatures or Vehicles?

Cowards will be shot! Survivors will be shot again!

I really want to have a ton of infantry, but if I had to choose between those two it would be MC's, because I play Iron Hands right now and use a lot of vehicles

Go Tyranid. Sounds like you want Tyranid. If after reading this post telling you to get Tyranid you still find yourself hesitant, you secretly want Orks and should buy them boyz instead.

Tyranids are great fun to model and paint. I got a small army in trade, and I haven't had so much fun modeling and paiting since I started the hobby.

If you are into converting, I'd think Orks would be the way to go, because you can make just about any vehicle in their Codex with leftover toys and junk you find.

As you've probably noticed, popular opinion is that the Tyranid codex is on the lower end of the competitiveness scale. I can say that I have more trouble winning games with my Nids so far than I have with my other 2 armies...but I've only played 4 games with them so far.

Then it sounds like it is settled. You prefer the aesthetics of the Tyranids and would rather field Mosterous Creatures over vehicles. Tyranids are definitely for you.

Remember, there are no garbage armies, just garbage warlords. The Nids may take some getting used to. You most certainly will have to approach your missions in a different mindset than before.

I think either will do just fine...but I play Nids, so I recommend them.
