So...Ive decided to play Warmahordes. I have my army selection narrowed down to a few things here and would like a little input based on what I'm looking for. I have listened to several podcasts/watched multiple YouTube videos and just want a little more info on what to expect from a given army/where to find what I am looking for. In general I can say a few things about my preferences...

I prefer not to play mainstream armies, I don't really know why, I guess I just like to be different (though I do know I can achieve that in this game simply by theming my list a certain way).

I like the hordes feel of putting beasts/old school units up against guys in full blown armor with "mechs" walking around. But on the same note, I never really liked steam punk until I started looking at this game so I have no issue looking at Warmachine factions.

I tend to like access to ranged units, though I dont necessarily need them all the time. In a game that seems slanted towards melee a gun line army might be cool and different.

Now down to some specifics:

Circle- Wolves are awesome. Griffins and constructs are cool. Satyrs and the Circle's ranged options (outside of Reeves, which look awesome) not so much.

Convergence- Warcasters are pretty sick, as are some of the units and jacks. But, hit and miss.

Cryx- Undead pirates, awesome. Love the units and casters, but the Warjacks are kind of hit and miss.

Cygnar- Ranged options are top notch. Across the board above average, no real ugly units but not many stand out ones either.

Legion- Beasts are top notch across the board. Casters are up there too, but units are very meh.

Protectorate- Units look awesome, jacks look cool, casters are top notch. But I HATE flails and the like. Plus their ranged options kind of annoy me for some reason...maybe I just hate flame weapons...

Retribution- Their units and casters are sick, but the jacks leave a lot to be desired.

And as a note...mercs seem cool in theory but I couldn't find much info on them. Anyone have a good link/info on them?

Any input on these individual army play styles, casters to check out, or anything that would help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm just getting into the game myself, so I can't really tell you much about how each faction plays, etc but in terms of checking out casters, units, play styles etc this website has been invaluable to me: http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/
Also the PP forums are helpful too. In terms of Warmachine, you generally aren't going to be running that many jacks so if there's a faction you really like except some of the jacks (Cryx, Retribution) then you wouldn't use many anyway. Play styles that I know about:

Circle (one of my chosen factions) are all about hitting fast and avoiding the hit back, terrain manipulation, teleportation beast shenanigans, all fun stuff.

Cygnar (another of my factions) are mixed arms, maybe tipping towards shooty, each unit is specialised, and they use a lot of Mercs (so there's your Mercenaries :p).

Legion you can play very beast heavy (they're the best faction for beast heavy lists, mainly due to the shepherds) so the fact their infantry looks like ass isn't necessarily an issue. They're the Alpha Strike/ Glass Cannon faction of Hordes, like I think Cryx are in WM, they hit hard, but will fold when hit back. A few of their beasts are ranged too.

Protectorate are all about fire so I'd skip them if you don't like fire

Mercs have 5 different 'Contracts' you can play; 4 Star Syndicate is like the bad guy Mercs, Highborne Covenant is the good guy Mercs, Puppet Masters is the Cephalyx, they're really small atm, kinda like Haemonculi from 40k Dark Eldar, experimenting and altering humans. They don't use Jacks but instead Monstrosities, which don't have a cortex, have low armour but a full damage grid. The Seaforge Comission is the Dwarves of the setting, I know their jacks are very robust and their colossal is very very good, and Talion Charter is the Pirates. I think all the merc forces (bar Cephalyx) are pretty mixed arms, just different flavours.

Convergence, I'm pretty sure all the models they have now are all the models they're gonna get, so they might lack a bit of versatility.

Retribution are combined arms also I think. I don't know much about them other than they're racist elves and they look cool.

Hope this helps in some way, I might be wrong on a couple of bits as I'm just starting myself, so someone else can correct anything that's wrong

I haven't voted on the poll because I don't know which you should go with haha, had enough trouble picking my factions, and I'm doing 4...

Not true with convergence. They will be getting more models, just not at the same pace as other factions. It'll be a "here and there" kind of thing.

To OP. Honestly, I'd try to find an army that fits your playstyle. (I went with fluff over playstyle) Unlike 40k, you can't just take a netlist and go in on easy mode. You have to find the kind of force that fits your mode of thinking. If you like sneaky tricks and devious do's, then go Cryx. If you like Jack heavy armies with resurrecting infantry, go Convergence, etc.

Also, check out my history blog: Minimum Wage Historian, a fun place to check out history that often falls between the couch cushions.

Ah okay, sorry I didn't realise that about Convergence. But are there any other mistakes in what I said? Don't wanna be spreading false information...

But yeah. Play style I think is more important in WMH than like 40k, there's a lot more thought in the game so if you can't think the way your faction plays, you won't do very well. Also, you wanna have fun haha.
