If you want to use the traditional mini gem effect, treat each separate pane section as its own gem. Pull the specular highlights (white spots) towards a central light source.

Also, smoothing the transitions will go a long way to make the gem/glass more convincing. After doing a highlight color layer, let it dry completely then wash it wash it down with thinned darker color to smooth the transition. Inks can also be used. (Red gem, red ink to smooth transitions, just keep it thin and watch for pooling).
