I was just wondering if it was possible to make a list based on the models you think would work well together without seeing the whole book. Do you need the stats for every model to make a good list or can you rely on the cards or something else?

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

Runnin up on ya.

You don't need to buy the books, the cards all have the rules on them. The books have fluff, painting tips, tactical tips and whatnot along with the rules (which are on the cards).

I like the app myself since it keeps them updated whenever there's an errata.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

There are two apps that you can get, one for the cards and one for the books.

The card decks are in the War Room app (iOS and Android)

PPDigital is for the books.

It is advised to own either a copy of prime or primal -or at least one of the mini rulebooks from the starters.
Wrath and Domination have battle engine rules.
Colossals and Gargantuans have the rules of their namesakes.
Warcaster and Warlock unit rules are in Vengeance and Gargantuans.
exigence has rules for warbeast packs (though they probably need errata).

But...Warroom also has those rules.
I atleast suggest your factions own RB. Firsts good read and you know the core of your army.

Warroom is only a rules reference(and its sometimes wrong)

You can get by with just it, but you really should have Prime/Primal Mk2. Thats the only book you need to buy.

Warroom comes with the rules reference for "free" in that its included with the base app(which is free) but you'll need to buy the decks seperately($8 each)

PP digital costs money for the books.

I have a rule book from the starter set and the menoth and merc cards on war room app. That's been plenty for me. I'm not really interested in the fluff of this game, I paint using my own color scheme and the tactics are somesomething I prefer to figure out myself.

Either way, you don't have to get the faction rule books, as all the rules are on the cards.

You can just check out reviews of units you don't own online to see what they are good at.

I bought the books off eBay for the factions I'm looking at (I got Prime, Khador, Cygnar and Retribution) and while they're not necessary I'm excited to read through all the background etc.

I also have most of the decks on WarRoom (only need Menoth and Mercs). They're pretty good for seeing what opponents casters and factions can throw at you, and if you bought one deck a month or something I doubt you'd notice the money. I love WarRoom as an app too, really quick and easy to build lists.

You really dont need the books, the warroom app has all the rules in a very easy reference section.

It auto updates all rules and faction specific cards and adds all new content when it is released automatically.

It helps keep track of HP so you dont even need the physical cards to play the game. It is very handy app and each factions cards are only $6 and will be updated forever.

There are also army builders online like forward kommander. No rules. But are good for setting up a list.

I got my copy of Prime, Khador and Retributon yesterday, and while you don't need them (well you'll need prime) I'm very impressed with them. They remind me of the older 40k codecies that had painting advice, proper art, good fluff, but if anything better (the painting guides esp., proper step by step photos and such). Hoping my Cygnar one turns up today

Mind, War Room while wrong is the easiest hting for PP to fix. There are outright typos on things in the books and some cards, and War Room incorperates errata in thew roding of abilities.

And stuff.

Occasionally when a new model is released, war room occasionally has typos.

It also doesn't have the exact verbatim rules from the rulebook in it. And exact wording is important.

It does have the exact wording, actually. And they usually do a pretty good job of getting typos fixed reasonably quickly.

Typically not, no. It's a wonderful rules reference, but you'll still want a core book. War Room certainly isn't laid out to be used as anything more than checking the wording of rules (outside of individual models), so you'll want to have the core just to be able to figure out how the game actually plays.
