I know we all use to love or like GW for what ever reason. A lot of us have fallen out of GW for what ever reasons. So today I went into my no so close friendly gaming store and spent money. Again, it wasn't on GW. I bought some Dropzone Commander The Resistance box set. After my purchase I looked at the GW stuff I use to buy and don't anymore. I just leave the store shaking my head thinking, here is $115 Canadian that could have went to GW but went else where. I still would like to purchase GW stuff, but I don't buy GW stuff for a variety of reasons.

So it got to me thinking. Am I the only one? I don't think so. So that is $115 from me today GW didn't get. A few weeks ago another $75 or so they didn't get because it went into Star Trek Attack Wing, and a few weeks before that I purchased some Star Wars X-Wing, another $50-$75. So in about a few months time, that is about $200-$300 of stuff I didn't buy from GW but would have, but didn't since I am displeased from GW.

So let's say $200. Small change. Means squat compared to millions. Now if I am displeased, there must be others as well. I am curious as to how much they didn't spend on GW. I am sure $200 here, $50 there, another few hundred from else where really adds up. So I wonder from fellow Dakkanites, how much we didn't spend on GW that they would have normally have gotten. I wonder if we add it up how much GW is snubbing their nose at.

So add yours to mine. So take my $200 and add your money to it. Next poster, will then take that total and add their sum to it. Of course you can add to it again if say in 2 weeks you bought something else that could have gone to GW. I am wondering how much this will add up to.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

One day you'll stop thinking "This is the amount of money I didn't spend on GW products" and just think "This is how much money I spent on things I enjoy." Or you won't think about how much you spent, because you're busy putting it together or playing with it. And you'll be better off for it.

Because "I don't spend money on GW" looks exactly the same whether you're spending your money on a new laptop, backing some small company on Kickstarter, or giving that money to Mantic or Fantasy Flight Games for Star Wars stuff.

Yeah, I finally made it to this point. Now I just view all money I spend on miniatures as "hobby money."

I'm from the future. The future of space

Another thing to remember is that there are too many people for GW to successfully cater to all of them. They chose a subset of their customer base to concentrate on and there are many of us as a result that are simply not their target anymore and haven't been for years.

Some of those customers are still being catered to by licensed products like those made by Fantasy Flight. Others have relegated themselves to just getting Black Library novels and thus stay as GW's customer but at a much smaller amount than when they bought miniatures regularly.

I honestly don't know if GW could have kept me as a customer without losing other people in exchange. And being someone who sees buying both rules and miniatures from the same company as being sub-optimal, they probably couldn't have kept me as a customer for the complete package approach they offer.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Between thiw one and the girlfriend one I think ill stop laughing tomorrow. Because I think that hits the nail on the head. I think sometimes that GW is a guy that beat up some people and is taking their lunch money. Or as brought up come over kissed their girl and walked out with her. But mainly I think it is they got butthurt to many times by some cheese. I will say this though if a GW employee shows up and kicks my dog its on. Far as the cheese goes with your 5 gallon bucket you use at a friendly game will promptly be followed by a dump truck next game. Now if you take my girlfriend I would go how does left overs feel and smile. Lol

You're still on the stage where you want to lash out to make things change, you hate that GW won't get better, and you're desperatly restraining your desire to waste a huge amount of money on their plastic gak. I can tell.

I've found that (for me at least) this stage is followed by a sort of 'enlightmenment'- being able to appreciate what Games Workshop has done for the hobby without letting them swindling you, moving on to other games/ways of playing. Sort of an opening of horizons and appreciating that GW isn't the only game in town, and realizing that rage won't do much besides annoy the wastrels who are still GW fanboys.

Good luck.

My beef with GW is not really money but the fact that somehow when the players want something (long coat or female IG miniatures anyone) they still manage to come out with something nobody requested, that manages to be ugly as a sin and charge you 20% extra (coughTauroxcough)

I do throw some money their way every blue moon when they manage to sell something I really think it's worth the price they ask, last time was for the new stormtroopers I think.

Well, I really want a copy of Imperial Armor 13, along with a new Sicaran, another Fire Raptor, some Rapier weapons carriers and some MkIII Marines. The allure of an ancient, shooty CSM force tough enough to take down Wave Serpents really appeals to me, so much so I am now considering playing 7th edition.

I got my order ready with Forgeworld and was about to buy it until I saw the stuff that was going on with Chapterhouse. It reminded me how much energy and resources the company puts into "protecting their IP" and the tactics they use, which are a little ham fisted. To put it bluntly, I don't want to financially support a company that acts this way. That brought me back to the issues I have with supplements / broken Codexes / the release cycle for new rules / finecast / the 20 or so other things they have done I found to be outrageous, it just doesn't stop.

So that's about $900 I did not spend with GW on Wednesday. I used to spend about $2,500 annually on GW stuff and that's just not happening unless there's some kind of change.

THIS. I'd say about 99.9999999% of my wages doesn't get spent with/at/on GW.

Though I did just take delivery of the battle magic cards and counter set from an online retailer.

Every hobby company does things that winds me up: FF keeping supply low to keep up demand, Mantic and their frankly awful at best, amatuer at worst sculpts/casts (awesome boxes though!) and GW seeming to purposefully update every single book I own within three years of buying them!

These threads remind of the PC vs Console 'debates' you see in the comments section on any gaming site.

I walked into a GW s tore today with like $500 in my bank account and then left with that same $500 in my account so that's something at least a few bucks I didn't spend on GW today.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

If you´ve actively lurked here from your join date I´d find it miraculous if you haven´t seen these trendy times come and go. But yeah we´ll see, I count a total of 8 anti-GW threads or ones that got turned into such on Dakka Discussions + 40K General combined. Didn´t check other subforums. I guess on the brightside at least people got hobbies and things to do.

Counting the amount of money that you are not spending on GW is one of those stages that you go through when leaving GW.

You will get over it.

Something to bear in mind is that just because you spent the money on something that was not GW does not mean that you would have spent it on GW stuff anyway.

I kind of did the same thing with Kickstarters early on - I had money, I spent the money on things that were not GW.

But I had already been cutting back on GW purchases for ten years - that money would almost certainly not have gone to GW in any event.

It went to Bones, and it went to Kings of War, and it went to Zombicide - but it is very unlikely that I would have bought any GW material regardless of what I spent the money on.

So, spend your time and money on what entertains you.

Me, I am at the 'two years without a GW purchase' stage. And it had been about a year for the purchase before that. (The purchase two years ago was at a going out of business sale - half price.)

Just went to my local game shop, who give a nice discount on GW stuff, and spend £48. Went in to have a look but they tempted me with a new order of Ork stuff they'd just got in.

1 Trukk. Been after my first one for a while but not got round to ordering one because I kept telling myself I'd go to a GW instead. I enjoy a trip to GW every now and then.

1 box of Killer Kans. Impulse buy, they were just there. looking at me.

1 box of Gretchins. Meat shield. Simple as that.

I think you misunderstood the thread title...

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

I still buy the very occasional GW model.

Because i love the model in question, and buying it pre-assembled second hand negates the whole point.

As a case in point i do intend to buy 2 more Talos pain engines. Because the model is fething awesome.

If possible i will be buying them discounted from somewhere else, or be given them as christmas/birthday gifts.

Gone are the days of obsessive collecting of gw stuff though. My money is by and large spent elsewhere, on other games or projects...
