Are the models in the Khador and Menoth starter set viable? Can they be used as a platform for future armies or do they not have the synergy needed to be very good...

The battle boxes are usually very well balanced and a great way to learn the game. I bought the Khador one and am slowly expanding from it.

Basically, they have the potential to be a solid core to build off of.
Looking back, I actually wish I had started with the Convergence battle box.

I mean the 2 player starter set vs the battle box

The models in it aren't bad. I actually think it's nicer than a battlebox since you have a unit to play with instead of just a battle group. They might not be terribly common, but the MoW in the Khador set are not bad.

They are great for learning and building a basic army from. Once you gain some experience you will probably move on to other stuff depending on your style.

But I've built decent 35 point armies from the Menoth, khador, cryx and Cygnar boxes.

I've heard Cinerators aren't very good...

"Not very good" has a different meaning in WM than 40k.

That is correct. They're entirely invalidated by Bastions. Fortunately they are easily converted into Bastions. Just swap their shield and sword for a halberd of some kind.

If Bastions didn't exist, they'd occasionally see play as a corner case unit. they're not bad per say, but they're basically obsolete.

Ok... So my Cinerators I made won't ever be used once I get bastions. Why are they so inferior?

The WM 2p set is "A Song of Fire and Ice". It is well balanced, though I say it might favor Menoth very very slightly, cuz Kreoss1 rules and Khador rarely needs so many heavies.

People will tell you that MoW or Cinerators are bad, but they are still totally viable in game. Khadorans often debate Demo VS Troopers... err they have a couple times, I'm sure. The beauty of BOTH OF THOSE UNITS is that they are very easy to convert and/or magnetize. Same for the jacks. Use that sticky stuff, play the 2p set a few times, then decide if you like the models included.

You can always use War Room for a quick (and usually cheap) way to proxy.

Both units have certain special abilities.

Cinerators have Flame Burst and Relentless Advance.

Flame Burst basically requires your opponent to make the mistake of clumping his dudes together to where they'll get lit on fire.

Relentless Advance requires your opponent to make the mistake of shooting your guys just enough to damage them, but not enough to kill them.

Bastions have Reach and Blessed on their melee weapons, they also have the Sanguine Bond ability.

Reach is the most powerful special rule in the game. It gives them 1.5" great charge threat than Cinerators do(without triggering Relentless Advance) and it lets them engage way more enemy models.

Blessed is a powerful special rule as it allows you to cut through most buff spells to cause more damage.

Sanguine Bond means your Bastions can take a ton of damage, up to 35 points, before you lose a model. Thats a pretty strong option, meaning you can guarantee your Bastions reach melee.

Cinerators basically require your opponent to screw up to get the most out of the unit. Bastions on the other hand do not.

Bastions are "better" for sure, but they still have a use:
http://privateerpressforums.com/showthread.php?111874-Bastions-Vs-Cinerators (mods: can i do this?)

I've heard of people using both and letting the Cinerators screen, but I have no idea what I'm talking about if it doesn't involve Khador. I CAN tell you that we played the crap out of the 2p set, and I would say Khador lost more in the beginning and less at the end. It was still pretty close each time, and both sides of the box are good as a basis for building a force.

Dooooooo iiiiiiit.... The forum commands you....

We found Khador had the edge most games being able to shell things from relative safety with Destroyer and Sorcha being able to wind rush around while firing off tons of pistol shots.

Don't regret getting that box at all though. Lots of fun games while learning the mechanics and it's nice to have a little Khador force for new people to try out if they're interested.
