Well, a quick flick through the cards for Ret casters doesn't show up with a grit rule, at least to my tired eyes. I'll echo the user above me, what model was he using?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

If your opponent says something that sounds off ask to see the card. If he can't show it to you, he doesn't get the rule.

As far as I know the only thing in Warmachine with the word "grit" in it is Drake MacBains Feat "True Grit" which has nothing to do with Focus. A quick google search and a search of the PP forums have no reference to a Grit rule in Retribution.

This. Entirely this. Infinity times this.

Any time you're unsure of something, ask for the card.

The only Ret caster with an ability which can give her additional Focus is Kaelyssa with Energy Siphon(when she hits a target with a melee or shooting attack, she can take one Focus/Fury off it and gain 1 Focus),

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

Sylys kinda gives a free focus I guess, but otherwise its been covered pretty well - Ret casters have various different ways to boost attack/damage/magic rolls (both Feats and Spells) but other than Energy Siphon have no way of gaining additional focus.

The only other thing I can think of is that this is possible some form of campaign rule?

Was it specifically on the Caster?

Possible confusion with Jack marshalling perhaps? Or some other solo shenanigans? ;-)

Without having a rulebook handy...

The only thing I can think of offhand is if you were using the warjack bonding tables; bonded warjacks can be allocated an additional focus point, but I have no clue if any of the bonds are called "Grit". As far as Retribution goes, there are no casters who can just magic an extra focus out of nothing, excepting Kaelyssa's Energy Siphon.

Speaking as a veteran player whose main faction is Ret and also as a TO, this is neither a regular Warmachine rule nor a specific rule of any Ret caster.

The only rule I know of with 'grit' in it is MACBAIN!!!!!'s feat 'True Grit' which is only based on how much focus he has on him at the time.

Always ask to see the card or have the rule shown to you in the rulebok.

I shall express myself to the fullest, regardless of state or local laws. -me-

Arcanists have an ability called "Power Booster" that assigns a free focus to a Jack without any.

But yeah, definitely ask to see the cards if you're confused about an ability.
