For the life of me I just can't beat trolls with my Menoth army. The trolls just tear through my models leaving me with just my castor left. I tried playing eFeoria this time and had the same kind of luck. Need some good advice when it comes to playing against trolls. Have a game this week lined up to play the shop owner against his trolls. Hopefully he will take it easier on me

What is it exactly that's giving you trouble?

Beasts?

heavy infantry?

Is it a particular caster?

Etc.

Beasts just tearing through my army. I never can do enough damage to kill one and these just keep buying attacks to wear me down. These are the three beasts I played against last game: Mulg, Mauler, Earthborn dire troll. Not sure what castor he had since he was proxy it. He also had the krielstone bearer and stone scribes.

Since the bearer can stop you from using continuous effects I would suggest anyone other than eFeora. When you attack just go after one of his beasts with your forces until it is dead. Repeat as necessary. If you have the Avatar and have the choir give him battle then he should be able to really put the hurt on a beast all by himself.

I don't know Menoth all that well but I do know that Trolls are large, slow, tough, and hit like bricks if they get up close. My greatest successes against them have been by fighting their army a piece at a time with ranged combat and fast melee units, also anything you might have that prevents healing is going to be worth its weight in gold (ignoring Regeneration and Tough makes Trolls much easier to deal with).

Yea don't bring either Feora against trolls. Most troll builds are similar to cryx in that you get much better mileage out of high defense than relaying on armor and hit points. Other defense tricks that menoth has also really help, the zelots UA helps at lot as well as enliven from vassels. Outside maybe Gunnbjorn there isn't anything in trolls to help them get around passage. Trolls also love bringing solos (fell callers, Janissa, Chroniclers, etc.) and the krielstone bearer to buff their army any chance to snipe out their support can really help swing the game in your favor.

Also my games against trolls with cygnar I have found gorman to be very useful if they are running the all those melee beasts. Use Gorman to black oil one beast while you concentrate the other beast down.

If he is running Mulg, Mauler and Earthborn for beasts and you want to bring jacks, especially melee ones the vassel for enliven will be key since any of those heavies with the rage animus from the mauler will trash a menoth heavy no problem. It is best to use enliven even if you think you are safe.

I don't play menoth but off the top of my head I think Kreoss (any of them really), Harbinger, pSeverius, High Reclaimer, and maybe Thyra would have game against trolls. You defiantly want boostable guns (jacks), weaponmasters to take down beasts, and/or cheap tarpit unit to hold up the models in melee.

Could you give us an approximate idea of what you and he were taking, and what sort of points level we're looking at?

eFeora will certainly struggle here, but I'd be very interested to hear the rest of your own army selection, and whether you were going jack heavy, or if you had enough screening units (and a beast-heavy troll list should struggle to tear through our jamming infantry very quickly).

I might suggest trying The Harbinger of you have her, and a reckoner or two, as the combined -4 to attacks really hurt Dire Trolls damage output. Judicious use of enliven from a vassal can also help if you're finding your jacks torn apart too easily.

but yeah, we'll need more info to really help you here.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

A fully loaded heavy and couple weapon masters should kill any Troll heavy you are able to charge.

Use your infantry like bubble wrap to shield your jacks(place them so that the trolls can't trample into melee with your jacks. IE: block their landing zones)

Errants are great at blocking as well. Self-sac stops snacking. As does Martyrdom if you are using Harbinger. Tough also stops it.

playing 35 pts at the moment. But I am limited on the number of models I currently own. Here was my list at 35 Pts that I played against the trolls last week.
eFeora
Reckoner
Redeemer
Crusader
Min choir
Vassal
Max bastions
Bastion Sen
Big book
Rhoven and guard ( just wanted to try them)

Need to assemble another Reckoner and Avatar just have not had time to put them together. Besides those two models I have Errants,TFG, vassel, wracks, Grand Scrutator Severius and what comes in the 2 player starter set. Sorry I had to edit this so many times on my phone

Ah yes, all good pieces, but ripe for being ripped apart by troll heavies. Troll heavies have generally low MAT and no reach, so their preferred target is expensive low-def models, which your list is mostly composed of. If you take some screening infantry hold the front lines, you'll find your army remains intact a lot longer. If you take a caster with defender's ward, take Errants and Rhupert Carvolo (along with the Covenant), and you'll do well. Otherwise, Zealots (with monolith bearer, for their invincible turn) or Temple Flame Guard are great options. Daughters of the Flame are also cool, as they have natural high defence that trolls can struggle with.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I agree with Maddermax, I think you need more rabble in your Menite army.

If the above is your collection then you need to consdier buying some Zealots at least, and some Templeguard. Both should be maxed out with UA.
I suggest you also invest in a Reclaimer, especially if you want to field expensive jacks.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Thanks for the tips. I see now where my army was ripe for the taking. Was my second time facing trolls so mistakes were made. Have a game against trolls tonight so I will see how I do with changes to my list. Thanks again
