Hi dakka,
My friend (a fellow first timer) asked for me to post up his 500 point Necron list he's planned to take out both mine and my other friends lists (IG & Tau respectively).
This will be our first time playing 40K but he's generally quite rubbish with our other boardgames - so the simpler the better :p

495 points:

HQ - 120
Necron Overlord
W/Res Orb

Troops - 215
Warriors x10 - 130
Immortals x5 - 85

Fast Attack - 70
Wraiths x2

Heavy Support - 90
Annihilation Barge

As I said it'll be our first time playing so we're all pretty clueless, he hates the look of the destroyers but loves the look of the wraiths but of course he's here to be advised/put in his place by you lot if you'd be so kind!

Cheers everyone,
Jabba

Looks okay for a starter game, what are the immortals equipped with? Also at this points level it might be better to have a couple extra dudes over a res orb, but I'm not sure.

Currently Gauss Blasters, he's ordered his codex and has only really read into the units online, i figured the res orb might be a waste at this level but as I don't know the details of it opened it up to you guys here - I'll tell him though

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just realised that they cost the same, so there's another question - Gauss Blasters or Telsa Carbines? :p

Here is the list that i'd probably run:

HQ:
Overlord, CCB, Warscythe Sempiternal Weave, Phase Shifter 240

Stormtek 25

Troops:
5 Warriors 65
Night Scythe 100

5 Warriors 65

Comes to 495 I think?

My 500 point list is

HQ:
Illuminor Szeras or Overlord with Warscythe @ 100

Troops:
5 Warriors @ 65
5 Warriors @ 65

Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge @ 90
Annihilation Barge @ 90
Annihilation Barge @ 90

500 on the dot

3 ABs kill almost everything at 500pts

He loves the look of ABs so this may be just the set up for him! Isn't there an issue with having no blob units though?

Keep any infantry far back and let the barges do the work. They should be able to murder anything at 500 without help.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.
Rule #2 is Do Cool S*%* Even If It's Tactically Inadvisable
Winning is something like Rule #17.
-The Shrike

Overkill is officially defined by the Commissariat and the Munitorium as: "The minimum amount of force that is to be brought to bear against the enemies of the Emperor."

The Annihilation Barges are probably the most competitive choice at 500 points, but you aren't going to make any friends. It's a pretty easy list to play. Literally stand back and shoot. Put the Infantry out of Line of Sight or behind the Barges for cover.

I've had fun with the following before. It's exactly 500 points.

Necron Overlord w/Warscythe
5x Necron Warriors
5x Necron Warriors
8x Canoptek Scarabs
Canoptek Spyder
Canoptek Spyder
Canoptek Spyder

The Spyders can generate 3 Scarab bases per turn. You're essentially generating 45 points of additional models each turn. This can have a huge effect at the 500 point level. Assuming the Spyders survive, you're talking about 180 points over 4 turns. The game becomes more unbalanced as it progresses.

The Spyders themselves aren't bad. S6 T6 W3 MCs. They'll ruin your day because people forget they're MCs.

Hi guys, thanks for that. I think from the sounds of things he'll run with two ABs and some spyders to back them up/make scarab bases but he's yet to throw a full list at me so keep the comments coming!

In the meantime, Illuminator Szeras or an Overlord at 500 points? He loves the look of the Szeras model.

Cheers,
Jabba
