About a month or two ago in my flgs I met this guy who was talking about gw prices, and how it would be better if they cut their prices by half.
So thinking here we go he's activated rant mode, trying to change the subject with out being rude I ask "so where do you buy your miniatures".

Reply "oh I buy all my stuff from fw I've got a 5000 pt world eater army".

Seriously I'm not making this up he showed me some pictures on his phone of it.
I'm managing to keep a straight face but it cant be done, I excuse my self and go to the bathroom and break down laughing.
More and more I'm seeing people like this cant stomach gw but buy hordes of fw can dakka provide me with a answer why ?

Better quality models, great variety, rule books that don't make your eyes bleed. You pay a premium for forgeworls but you get a premium product.

Well I'm Australian so when I can get FW stuff for the same price as GW that makes perfect sense to me, but assuming the situation is different over there I'd guess the same as above. Better models, makes the price easier to swallow.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Troll post is trollish.

Anyhow, people like FW because of the service they receive in addition to a superior product. The rulebooks I've read all appear to be written very well and put together with an extreme dedication to detail.

That all being said, with all model companies there are issues - of the two Eartshaker with carriage kits I've gotten from them, the barrels were bent. True, easily fixed via hot water, but I found it annoying that rather than offer to send me a replacement the FW guy via the email just told me to re-mold the barrel myself.

Again, not understanding why people by something shouldn't be some sort of quest. Why do people like Pepsi over Coke when they both suck? Who knows. People like what they like.

FW stuff isn't much more expensive than regular GW stuff now, and many see it as a much better product.

It's long been cheaper in some parts of the world (Japan, Australia) to buy FW than GW, and in some cases FW is cheaper in the UK too.

It's perfectly reasonable to claim that GW is 100% overpriced and still spend a fortune on FW. If I had the money and inclination to start a new GW army I'd probably pay the small amount extra to get a FW variant instead.

Instead of going to the bathroom and breaking down laughing you could have asked the guy his reasoning.

This. FW kits are expensive, but high quality and the rule authors seem to understand that the game is about more than selling space marines to kids. GW kits are almost as expensive, but nowhere near as nice. So it's entirely reasonable to claim that "main" GW stuff is overpriced but still buy FW stuff.

I find it annoying that people would rather ask for replacement parts and contribute to high prices than make simple fixes that take less time than writing an email asking for a replacement (which will still be bent because all parts like that from FW are bent).

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

The OP's question is legitimate. I imagine many people who are unfamiliar with Forgeworld are curious why the very people who whine about GW prices will then go and spend easily 50% more on FW products.

But yeah, the answers above are pretty much why. Forgeworld just churns out a much better product than GW does. Their models are nicer, their rules are tighter and their books have more content in them to justify their price then GW ones do.

Then that would have been a question to ask the guy at the time, since all anybody here is going to be able to do is guess at his motives.
