Preamble:
Hi Dakka, welcome to my second blog. I've been blogging my painting and modelling progress here on dakka since last September - You can find my - White Scar's - now Imperial Fists blog here. I'm closing in on the end of my White Scars, and just finishing off the handful of models I have left which is what has lead me to Chaos. My FLGS started a fantasy league a few months ago, starting small and building up. Excited to try out fantasy, I decided on Warriors of Chaos and proceeded to buy an army. I found a gentleman who was selling his (very large) Warriors army, and bought it from him. For a league that starts at 600 points, and will proceed to 1200 points over 9 weeks (at 300 point intervals), the 5000 (yes, 5k), points of Warriors might have been overkill... But it isn't. The army, which is all built well, magnetised where appropriate with magnetised movement trays are completely unpainted. I scored a great army! I decided to blog the progress, in order to keep my motivation up.

The army?
I'm a fan of Nurgle, and Khorne to a lesser extent. My Warriors are going to be predominantly followers of the Plague Father, but dont discount the other gods. I'm sure they'll get a sprinkling of attention, too.

Here are a few pictures of what I've got going on now:

Hi everyone..

No real progress at the minute, got an impending deadline which combined with batch painting warriors means not a lot is getting finished. This weekend will be different though..

Completed these a while ago, just had no where to show them off...

More on the weekend

Hi Everyone..

Thanks for the kind words, guys..

I'm batch painting Chaos Warriors (not the most fun thing in the world)...
I usually do batches of 3, but I upped it to 9 to try and finish quicker.
Only need to do the silver, gold and final layer / highling on the armour, and then they are done.
Also, a shot of my two completed dragon ogres. Got another one on my table now, still in very early stages.

Thanks again for looking

Batch painting chaos warriors almost killed me. Did a box of 12 from start to finish in one sitting. I think that’s the last time I painted more then 4 things in one go.

Interesting to see a brighter, cleaner, nurgle army. It’s one so often done in dirt, rust, and washes. I know my Chaos army was done in a black wash everything motif.

@Para. Thanks man. That is just the base layer for the armour. The final colour is more goblin green. I use sick green as a basecoast because it covers the primer a lot nicer that goblin green, and conbined with a black wash makes for a nice shadow colour.

@Nev. That must have been hell. I spent 3 hours this morning finishing them off, and was so relieved when I did the last model's highlight! Just in need of a varnish and some flock, then picture time
And I dont think Nurgle warriors would have rusted and poor quality armour... I mean, Warriors are just angry people who march into battle to fight and win the affection of their god. You dont go into battle with degraded armour and sickness - that's just asking to lose. They have to earn Nurgle's favour before they are given over to pestilence.
That and painting rust and wear on them adds like 4+ hours of work...

I placed an order a few weeks ago, and it finally came through today.
Shame it's wrong...
I recieved plaguebearers, not the plague drones I ordered and paid for :(
I sent an email today, and just waiting on a reply to get this fixed.
Its not that big of a deal, not I like haven't got anything else to work on

Mornin' all.

It's been a busy few days.
I pushed hard to finish the warriros.
And in the process moved the other unit of warriors down my mental to-do list
To reward myself for completing them, once I finish the last dragon ogre, I'm going to jump into something big.
Choices are: Mutalith, Chimera, Lord w/ Manticore or Daemon prince
I'm leaning heavily towards the Chimera.

I also tried martian-style (red) basing for daemons [40k]. I've never done it, and I learn a bit for next time.
E.G. Wash before drybrushing..

Jah, over in his blog, did some green and purple washes on his SR's base. It inspired me to try adding a purple wash to these red bases.
It didn't work great, but I know what to try next time

Bases are one thing you can use to tie an army that has a diverse look into something coherent. Are you sure you want to base the demons differently then the warriors? I’d also worry about the green demons on the red bases, particularly around this time of year. Of course, take that with a gain of salt, I’m a guy with a red sleigh and santa hat in my nurgle army.

I like the white cloaks, particularly with the green. very pre-heresy Death Guard. I’m a guy who like a little 40k nod in my WHFB.

Do you have a shot of the unpainted army? Or a list to built towards?

Hi guys,

@Nev. I was thinking that the red martian style base will compliment the mainly green army.
It needs some more playing around with before I'm happy with it...
And I didn't even notice the pre-heresy death guard link

@Para. Yeah, it's a bit of an inconvenience.
But, they have appologised and are sending out the Pdrones.
Also, they said to keep the plaguebearers by way of an apology Can't argue with that!

So, this update is just to show you guys my army as it stands.
I never get much painting done over thursdays and fridays :( University is pretty rammed on these days.
I'll be back the other side of the weekend with updates on my painting progress.
But for now, my army:

list of models:
Spoiler:

Daemon Prince
2 lords on foot
2 lords on horses
lord on manticore
exalted hero / BSB
10 warhounds
36 warriors
1 chariot
5 marauder horsemen
10 knights
3 dragon ogres
chimera
Skullcrushers
hellcannon
mutalith
3 spawns

Mornin' everyone,

@Paradigm. I was looking around for some reference pictures and inspiration a while ago, and stumbled across a really good WoC gallery here on Dakka. This is the gallery, by a user called spiralingcadaver. There is a Mutalith in the gallery that is beautiful... that is going to be my reference picture when I get around to it Although, going to do chittin type armour instead of the silver armour plates on the mutalith in the gallery. And yes, that is a converted CSM in the back - an alternative to a Hellcannon. (Conversion wasn't done by me, I bought it that way when I got the army).

@Nev. Thanks, mate And when I said lords, I meant both lords and sorcerers. I have 1 lord that is very clearly a sorcerer, and the rest can be either.

Well... I finished the dragon ogres.
They took some time, but all done now,
ready for the painting scores on Tuesday (part of the fantasy league scoring system)

And here is what is taking their place on the painting desk:

Hopefully some plaguebearers soon,
Z

I love the way the ogres work together as a unit. With the posing and the base elements tying them together.

You going to add any blood splatters to your army? I only ask because Khorne lords seem a little naked with at least a little on them.

That chimera looks like a mean little ball of angry primer, looking forward to seeing him painted. Back when I was playing Chaos, we had rules for them, but no model. I picked up a 3rd party one, but he’s not nearly as cool as the new GW one.

Hi guys,

It's been over a month since I posted anything here. But It's time to get back into it!

I've since had a supply drop, which consisted of Hellstriders (at 50% off - can't fault it), another Chariot, and some Blightknights!

I've built up the Hellstriders, mainly so I can use them in games:

They'll get a rebasing soon, but they are relatively low on my priority list, right now.

In terms of painting, stay tuned for a Chaos Sorcerer, and the first completed Skullcrusher.

Thanks for looking,
Z

I thought you were aiming more for a khorne/nurgle army? The blight guys look to be a fun kit, but I can’t say I like the look of the hellstriders as a kit. The riders just don’t looks like they could stay mounted. Not a fan of the new steeds of slaanesh either, but that’s just my age showing. When I bought some to add to my chaos army, they came with the lobster claw demonettes.

Good to see you working on your chaos warriors. And remember, pillage before you burn.

Most of the main elements of my army are Nurgle. Blocks of warriors, DPs and sorcerers etc, but I've been trying other things out too. I proxied Hellstriders for a few games, to see what they were like. Still a little undecided on them, tbh. But when a friend said the hobby store by him were doing 50% off GW stuff, I couldn't say no Hellstriders were the only WoC unit they had in that I was interested in, so I got them

I agree that they look as if they'll fall off their steeds.

But anyway, I've started building the Blightknights. Beautiful. Such a great kit, with LOADS of extra bits that are all suitable nurgley. I've kept the extra bits seperate from my bits bag so I can go straight to them when I'm looking for nurgle bits. I've also made a few - conversion is probably too strong of a word - changes. Next time I take a picture of them, I'll highlight the changes. Nothing ground breaking, just a few bit swaps.

Hey guys,

Been a bit busy around here recently...
Got a nice little WiP of the blightknights down below
The sorcerer is very nearly finished. Just needs a final highlight on his hand, then varnish and pictures.
Jugger is still lagging behind, unfortunately. The juggernaught itself is almost done, but the rider is untouched.

Here they are. Beautiful models. Definately made their way to the top of my to-paint list.
They were the first Fantasy models I have built that needed to be spaced properly so the bases would allign.
I buggered it up when I built them, so I needed to pop them off their bases and get creative by adding height to allow them to rank up properly.
Some minor conversions in there too. In the second pic down, I had to cut up the head of the guy on the right and use some GS to get it to fit properly. I used a different torso front than advised, and the head I wanted didn't fit, hence the few changed. And the guy on the left of that pic has a different left arm than advised. I had to chop some bits off and GS it to fit properly.
The axehead third picture was snipped of another weapon and put on the champion. It's just such a cool looking axe I couldn't pass on it.

Pictures of the painted sorcerer will be next up,
Z

Ranking up minis is one of my least favorite parts of fantasy. When building you want to do things like put the lances down, ready for the charge, or spearmen in a bristling formation. But when it comes time to put them together on the table, and get them into base-to-base with your foe, headaches ensue. And that’s not counting guys with capes that take up the space next to them.

Nice looking brutes you have there, next step is paint!

Evening all!

I finished this Sorcerer a few days ago;

I wasn't too sure on the blue and the purple together, but I think it works well enough

Tomorrow, I'm heading down to the FLGS to play a massive 8k game with 3 other friends (4k each). All of the big games we have done have been a blast. I'm really looking forward to trying out the blightknights If I remember, I'll pack my camera and snap a few pictures.

Next up will be the Skullcrusher that has been on my desk since the start of December!

That guy looks awesome, the gold detailing esepcially. The blending on the cape is awesome too, although I think a freehand design, even a simple one, would really finish off the ensemble.

Looking forward to game pics; I'm not such a fan of how WFB plays, but there are few things as cool as massed ranks of warriors clashing.

Hi guys,

Para, I forgot to take my camera... So no battle pics... :( I'll make an effort to remember next time!

These past few days, I've really pushed on myblightknights.
I just re-read my last post, and realised that was I going to post the finished Skullcrusher picture next... That can wait until I have the camera stuff set up again...

Here is where the blightknights are:

One is complete - my proof of concept. Going to make a post in the P&M forum for advice on the weathering. The more people who see it, the better advice I can get.

Here is the completed one:

I have to say, my favourite part of this model is the sword. A Typhus Corrosion and Ryza Rust combination is amazing! Followed by a re-edgehighlight of silver and some Nurgle's Rot for yellow staining and it's great!

Anyway, comments welcome as always
Next up will definately be the skullcrusher, along with this month's supply drop.

I like the sword and shield, but the armor strikes me more as camouflage then corrosion. I couldn’t point to a specific place that stands out, but it’s the overall vibe of it.

I know chaos warbands are often disparate forces brought together, but I’m worried about your overall army cohesion. OK, after I wrote that line, I looked back through the thread for examples, and it’s not that bad. I know you went for a very clean look for your dragon ogres, but I recalled the chaos warriors also being pretty tidy with their gear. And then blightkings, with the rust/slime/neglect turned up to 11. But I had totally forgotten about your lord, and he helps bridge the gap.

Warriors: We love nurgle, but dull swords don’t kill very well.
Lord: Papa loves me, I spread his blessings.
Blightkings: I think he loves me a little too much…

It’s something to keep in mind.

Hey guys,

Remember that Skullcrusher I primed way back at the start of december? Well, here he is

Not overly complicated to paint. I just kept putting him off for other things.

And I made some movement trays over the weekend:

My craftsman ship with power tools is terrible, see the poor cuts sticking out from under the wood.
Easy enough to knockout.
Plasticard, cut to size using the power saw. After measuring it all out, I gave myself an additional 3mm for mistakes / little bit of wiggle room for models that dont quite rank up properly.
Then, No More Nails was used to glue the wood into place. I used bevelled wood, 6mm along the flat parts. Picked up for 95p from the hardware store for a length of 1m.
I've bought some rubber steel sheets from ebay, too, which should arrive tomorrow. Once they're glued onto it, they'll be magnetic
Of the 5 bases I made, 3 are perfect. the one on the top right is slightly too big (by about 2mm - which is nothing really), and the bottom left is off by 5mm, meaning it's basically useless But awell, live and learn.

Anyway, still a bit to do on the bases.
Next up is my February supply drop built.

Afternoon, all!

Got some goodies for you today...
Firstly, progress on my blightknights.
Number 3 and 4 (from the left) are still in progress. Almost done with them.

And here is all my stuff from my february supply drop.

Lots of models, as you cans see
Those avatars of war models I'll be using as chosen. Not the greatest to build, but they look suitable different from regular warriors. I'm going to build the other 8 of them today, ready for their first use in a big game tomorrow.
I will do my best to remember my camera...

More soon,
Z
