They are used for a couple of things. 1 When placing units you put down a throw away squad and try to make your enemy place important units first. 2. When marching up the field they can help protect your flank from getting charged. If you get your main block into combat they can always help flank an enemy. 3. Can also help delay/tie up warmachines.
