As the title says I own Strakhov, I love his fluff and his playstyle really sings to me. Back around April I was in a journeyman league and I borrowed some models from a friend. I used assault kommandos, iron fang pikemen, and torch (love this guy) now that I'm away from that area and have to start a new and strakhov being the only model I own, where should I go from there? Should I stick to what I was previously using? I'm just really unsure of where to go, though I suppose I can't go wrong with a war dog.

Are you new to Khador, or Warmachine in general? What models do you already have other than Strakhov?

I've been playing Strakhov recently but haven't exactly done very well for myself, so my advice isn't worth much. Having said that:
- It's widely held that Strakhov likes a Spriggan. It makes the most of the extra movement he brings, and probably makes the best assassin jack for him.
- Great Bears are always a great unit but a bit fragile; Strakhov benefits by having more armour cracking since he can't handle too many jacks and has no damage buffs, and he can protect them with Occultation and help them get the alpha strike with his feat.
- Widowmakers are useful for clearing lanes for his assassinations and one makes a good target for his Sentry spell.

Those choices should work well with any caster (or so I hear), as should Winterguard and Pikemen, so probably good places to start. Some other stuff that I use personally use with Strakhov (with mixed results):
- Black Ivan, for solo removal or softening up heavies before my melee jack goes in (to try to guarantee that I can trigger Overrun and move back to safety). Can be quite survivable with Superiority on him thanks to his higher base DEF and Dodge - coupled with Bulldoze this can be useful for scenario play.
- A Demolisher, often on a Jack Marshal, for holding zones, serving as a roadblock, and dealing with infantry.
- Nyss, because I have them.
- Alexia and the Risen, as a cheap infantry screen.
- Sylyss: that extra point of focus to boost an attack roll can mean the difference between triggering Overrun to pull off a cunning plan... or missing the shot, leaving you stalled and vulnerable.

Assault Kommandos don't have a very good reputation (though I have no personal experience with them), so probably not a good idea as an early purchase. Torch is a good jack, but a Spriggan is probably the better first purchase.

I'm sure more experienced players can give you better suggestion for what to put in your army and/or how to use them.

Thanks for the reply. Strakhov is literally the only model I own. I'm not really new but havent been playing a long time either. I've checked out the battle college site since posting here, and its made me fairly competent but still unsure.

In the journeyman league I was in, I was playing strakhov with I think min assault kommandos with ua, min pikemen, and torch. And I did fairly well with it at 15pts. I believe I ended up going 5-2 in the league with it. But with all those other options I may have to think more on it.

Wow, sounds like you know what you're doing - more than me anyway, so far I have very few wins to my name.

So I'm sure you've heard of the "Heaven-Piercing Spear", and you've picked up on using his cinder bomb simply to put out some smoke and block lines of sight (Rienholdt lets you throw a second one I believe), but there is one small trick with Strakhov that I don't see mentioned too often; casting Overrun on a jack, walking up to get enemy models in feat range, charging with your army, but activating the jack last and making sure to kill something with it so you can trigger Overrun and walk Strakhov back to safety.

The problem many people have with using his feat for the alpha is that it often gets Strakhov killed. This helps you to avoid that. Just make sure you leave something soft for the jack to squish - or you put some damage on a heavy before he charges it to help guarantee that you kill it - otherwise, well, the whole plan falls apart.
