Yet he talks to a GW employee? Why not go there for games with more reasonable and intelligent people?

If he is that irrational you really can't do anything, besides maybe trying to get the GW manager(assuming he is less irrational) and get him to help your friend believe that FAQs are real as far as data slates and the like go you could show him that GW sells them. There may not be a lot you can do unfortunately,

He may actually have a problem and require help and as his friend you should really make sure he is ok if he acts like this about other things.

Frankly, hearing your description of him, I gotta ask if it is WORTH having games with him. He sounds absolutely miserable to play with. I'd recommend getting to the store more often and getting to know people/arranging games.

Pick up any GW product box from the past few years.
Turn box over.
Point out URL printed on said box by GW.
Type said URL into web browser.
Bring up any product page under the Warhammer 40K logo -> Warhammer 40,000 Books & Digital.
Scroll to bottom of the main page.
Note the copyright/trademark section.
Select the 'Related Sites' link for Black Library.
Scroll to the bottom of that page.
Point out the copyright/trademark notice there, with emphasis on the 'Black Library is a division of Games Workshop.' line.
Disconnect keyboard (if wired) from computer case.
Activate keyboard's alternate use option if said friend still has any doubts.

The FAQ's/errata are now on the GW site. Scroll right to the bottom, bottom of the second column. Now you can play with official GW errata.

Can't help with fixing his stupid though.

Sounds like the guy has some zealotry problems. It's like trying to argue a religious person. Logics simply doesn't work. You should probably apply the method used to convince schizophrenics take their pills.
You agree with everything he says. Act friendly and understending. He stops seeing you as a threat to confront and only after that you try to bring your ideas up to him. But they must only sound as suggestions that he's not obliged to follow. Furthermore, it must not contradict his logics scheme. Like you're not telling him that FAQ and Dataslates are legal. You tell him that they're so much fun and add variety and are GW approved or something.
Earlier or later he starts taking pills using dataslates and reading FAQ-s.

Sure, it's easier to play another person but as there's no other person...

I would probably print the FAQ and relevant rules. Give them to the store manager to sell to your friend. Everyone is happy that way. Your friend gets to buy the "official" updates, the store manager makes some money, and you don't have to deal with the crazy.

And what do you do 2 months later when FAQs change, at best you will get him to think that the internet and the store manager lie.

I know several people who do not use the Internet and are rarely informed about dataslates, FAQs and whatnot. They generally don't argue about the rules presented, the reaction is more like 'I did not know you can do that.'

I wouldn't try to argue fluff with him, because it doesn't really matter. What might be a good idea is to try and get him to go to another gaming shop, even if it means a road trip. Part of the problem might be that he's only interacting with you and having to take your word for it. Seeing how other people use these things might help.

He's right tho, the Internet is lies.

He sounds completely sensible to me. If you strap some 9-volt batteries to your head and stare at the corners of your walls for a few hours all the answers will come to you to!

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

If this isnt the guy, my apologies. I had thought it was another one of those threads dedicated to stirring up arguments (I think there is a special name for those threads) and I had thought that confirmed when immediately people started spamming in it with off topic posts flaming GW (not that they dont desrve it but for other reasons) instead of staying on topic and actually discussing it as a few of us did.
It is pretty much the flip side of this thread.

Why not ask the store manager to write your friend a note endorsing all the FAQs etc, get him to sign it, seal it with the Aquila and give it to your friend.
That way he has written, undeniable proof, in his sweaty little hands, that FAQs etc are legal.

If you argue with stupid people they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

If he is a real friend tell him straight up:

"Dude, I like you as a friend but your beliefs are killing me. You drive me crazy proclaiming that the internet is lies. When you do not let me use the FAQs and everything else you kill the game for me. You really need to chill or I am not going to play this game with you anymore."

People like that know that they are full of gak. Just call him out and tell him how you feel. If he is a real friend and not a total tool, then he will relax a bit and stop the BS.

Honestly, it sounds to me like he is a sore loser and he thinks that he can get an advantage by blocking you from using faqs and other online rules.

I wonder what he would do if you showed up with an e-codex.

In full disclosure using this method would be morally wrong at the least. The friend would be a bad friend for doing it and the store owner would be crooked and untrustworthy.

Having said that there is no reason you could not with a modicum of effort convince this person who has a very limited sphere of information collection that GW sells a special FAQ, supplements, etc. on a semi regular basis. You could very easily just print off the most recent formation and FAQ and stick them in a quick magazine binding (they sell packs of adhesive ones for a couple of dollars).

Really I would talk to the GW manager and see if he would be willing to give the friend a printed version of what is on the website. You print it, the GW store manager says it is the official information sent out by GW HQ, and everything is true. Your friend doesn't need to know that GW uses the web to send the info.
