The dark behind the eyes.

Following on somewhat from my Tactical Marines thread, what do you consider the best troop choice(s) in the game?

Note: I'm looking for troop choices that are good by themselves - not just because they're a cheap way of unlocking Wave Serpents or somesuch.

Well tbh a lot of troops in the game are good for many different reasons. One of my favorites are ork boys. Reasoning is because of the flexability to change it depending on how you run your army. Minimum squads, max squads, ard boy squads. They are also so cheap for how many you get.

My second favorite is tactical marines. As was stated in the tactical marine thread, they can hold down objectives very well. When I use to play marines I played crimson fists. My army was full of bolters and fists. 're rolling to hit was amazing. I can't tell you how helpful it is to force your opponent to roll those extra 3-4 dice.

Third and last favorite for me is going to be plaguebearers. Very tough and I love their models.

Fire Warriors are pretty great when supported. Sure, when they're not, they're very lackluster, but with a bit of Markerlights they can be very good and very shooty! Their cost are a premium for a good save and weapon, and they are easy to keep on the table if within a Ethereal's grasp. They are versatile, too - You can set up shooting gallery's with Rifles, or go mobile in a Devilfish with Carbines... Maybe you are feeling lucky and wanna hunt Vehicles with a six-man team, Carbines and EMP-Grenades? It's there, baby

Only downside is that the models af ugly as hell... In my opinion, anyway.

Plague Marines and Eldar Jetbikes take the cake, no question. Best defensive and best tactical units in the game. Other choices are certainly more fun, or have better synergy, but in a vacuum there is nothing that compares to these two units that I can think of or am familiar with. Maybe Necron Warriors but I'm not familiar.

White Scars bikers are first place.

Windrider Jetbikes take second.

Imperial Guard veteran squads take third. For a mere 155 points, you can take a veteran squad and give them two plasma guns and a chimera to roll around in.

Insanely points efficient.

I give my vote to the IG Veteran Squad.
They are a prime example of being a flexible troop choice and one of the few units that I actually customize a lot in different lists:

Shotguns+ Heavy Flamer and Chimera for an objective grabbing unit.

90 points minimum squad with lascanon + forward sentries for sitting on objectives with extra cover.

Meltavets in chimera

Plasma vets in chimera

Demo vets, dropped from a Valkyrie with melta guns blazing. Still solid, even if less common.

You can also add cheap support characters to them and make a monster hunter unit with plasma vets + plasma pistol (and demo bombs if you want to go crazy) and a dirt cheap Lord Commissar for exclusive orders.

All in all, even if you go crazy with full upgrades, they really never reach the point were they are truly over costed or never hold the possibility of earning back their cost. This is the only unit, baring Tigurius/Thunderfire Cannons, that I can think of that never ever truly dissappoint me in games.
Furthermore, they are one of the only units that I can think of that's NEVER regarded as mere tax and their tactical flexibility, along with their cost effiency, really puts almost all other troop choices to shame. They are actually solely responsible for why I have difficulties with assembling other army lists. I can't describe how much I loathe looking at troops as tax, especially when the Veteran Squads left me spoiled with choices.

Pink Horrors. 99 points for 2 warp charge and have to be killed to a man to stop them casting or generating warp charge? Not to mention re-roll 1 on their saves.

Nurglings are pretty good value, 12 wounds with a 5++ and shouded and deepstrike for 45 points? They make Cultists look expensive!

Tyranids have got their 15 point mucalids, which are about the only troops in the game that can reliably put some damage on fliers, though you could look at them as a cheap way of unlocking flyrants since 'Nids don't exactly struggle for dealing with flyers.

Marine bikers with Plas/Grav/Melta bring a bit too much to the table for their point cost IMHO.

Grey knight terminators are another that are a virtually mandatory choice given that they're 33 ppm.

Eldar jetbikes are digustingly good for their minimal cost. Not sure why they get so many bonuses for so few points other than "Because Eldar".

I think Firewarriors NEED the rest of their army to be any good. They have an excellent basic weapon, but need markerlights and other team members to shine.

Another shout out to tactical squads. Several loadout options, multiple dedicated transport options, and can operate independently from the rest of the army if needed, either by choice or by disaster.

I'm going with Ork Boys. They're the core of my army and it's never a 'tax' to take them.

Back in 4th edition, I would have voted Dark Eldar. Dark Eldar Warriors were sick. They could just have so many heavy and special weapons. 10 man squads with 2 blasters and 2 Splinter cannons, backed up by 10 man squads with 2 dark lances to hold the backfield and snipe. Hot.

Ork boys, eldar jetbikes, termagants, nurglings, plague marines. Most of these are good enough that they can actually be the core of a good army with some support backing them up.

Ork boys are probably the best. Standard boys plus pk/bp nob means that until the unit is almost dead, they have about a 1.1% chance of failing morale, they greatly benefit from cover, have good toughness, and they will rock you out at melee unless you're like...15 Death company on the charge with Astorath.

The eldar jetbikes are there because obsec jetbikes lol.

LOL tactical marines? Pretty sure tactical marines are one of the worst troops in the game. Expensive - No firepower - Bad Transports.

I think point for point and the abilities they get, GK strike squads are the best troop option in the game. Bar none.

Nurglings are awesome. Played a HulkHammer game with a 200 point limit and took a 9 base Nurgling swarm (for something like 135pts) and took out loads of stuff through weight of numbers even with S3, WS3; the 5++ and +1 to cover saves seriously helps too

Strike Squads are great only +6 points to get a forceweapon and a stormbolter from a standard marine tac - ability for str6 in CC. 30 inch threat range. Psycannons are amazing.. GK Terms are even better.

Space Marine Bikers easily are the best choice. They function under almost any CT and can take 2 Special Weapons PLUS a Multi-Melta.
For an MEQ equivalent, Grey Hunters are the best. Two special weapons + a Combi, and it's all good. Under these same realms, Plague Marines are cool dudes.

Noise Marines are incredibly nasty as well. While not terrific at melee, they're excellent for mopping up enemy troops with sonic weapons or taking out vehicles.

Nope. Only the cult troops can become troops I believe.

Noise marines are good, but I have to give best troop to:
SM bikers
Necrons
Ork boyz

Probably in that order, in a void. If allowed access to rest of the army, firewarriors make an appearance

Chaos Marines were one of the first that came to mind. They've got a wide selection of wargear, have a respectable statline, and can easily be tooled to be good at both shooting and assault.

Then there's Necrons with their Gauss weapons that can glance even Land Raiders to scrap metal, Tesla weaponry that allows them to shred hordes through sheer volume, and that annoying ressurection ability.

Really surprised no one has mentioned necron warriors. They can kill anything other than toughness 8+ and can get back up after they die. I've had 40 warriors knock off 11 hull points in a single turn from an ork stompa. For 13 points a model.
