I'm fed up. No more Marines! I have played over the years C:SM, C:SW, C:CSM, CA, and 30k Sons of Horus and I. Am. Bored.

Help me figure out which army to play that is:
1) Fast
2) Good at CC
3) Has fun special
4) Throws tons of dice.

For some reason I am between Nids and CC oriented Crons.

Crons should have a new release in coming months so I can wait but what do you think between the two? Maybe a different option such as Eldar?

All input is appreciated as I am facing a 40k existential crisis!

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.

Ork Pretty much exemplify 1 - 4

Crons play a lot like marines I would stay away from them if your sick of marines.

Nids are not amazing at CC, there not terrible there just not amazing.

1) Fast - Eldar/Dark Eldar/Orks
2) Good at CC - Orks/Dark Eldar/ Eldar (specialist units)
3) Has fun special - Orks
4) Throws tons of dice. - Orks/tyranids

If you own a bunch of plasticard and are a dab hand with greenstuff, I'd suggest trying orks.

Otherwise I'd say you can't go too far wrong if you choose one of da panzees

Sorry Ork fans, they was my first army back in second edition and I really don't miss them.

What about demons? Any success stories outside of Flying Circus? I think a Slaanesh cult would be cool.

Dark Eldar meet your criteria and are polar opposites being incredibly fragile in comparison.

I agree with orks or dark eldar here. Venoms full of wyches is going to be pretty dissimilar to what you've been playing so far.

You may also want to consider demons as well.

Daemons can be fast, good at close combat and if by tons of dice you mean "tons of dice before the game is actually started" then I think you have your army.

Field those Daemone Khorne Dogs..(haha, khorne dogs!) and some slaaneshi topless broads and a few daemon princes and you can zip around and smash/slash everything to pieces.

I always liked the fluff and look of Tyranids, and liked their rules for the reasons 1 to 4 you mentionned. Then I tried them and I was hooked. Now I got a 2k pts army and I love it.

EDIT : But yeah it depends on what environnement you are playing. My gaming group (+- 10 players) play mostly fluffy army, or at least non-OP list. That means I can run CC nids and still have fun and win games. But if you do competition, I don't think you're gonna have much chances with CC unless you do strange stuff with Lictor and what knows.

I had a similar thing happen to me a while ago. I tried Orks (liked them but after 6 months of only playing them, I am kinda stuck with a single list that is efficient), Eldars (too powerfull, shelved them) and now have settled with Dark eldars and I think I might have found my goto alt other than Space marines/Dark Angles/Blood angels.

I like using WWP to deep strike Coven supplement formations. I like Grotesques in a Raider with eather sail (move 12 inches, flat out 24). Turn 2 assault almost garantied.

Dark eldars are a tiny little bit more resilient than they were with the changes to 7th edition vehicle damage and the changes to the Power from pain having impats based on the turn you are on.

When you think fast, you can't go wrong with Dark Eldars. But you won't be throwing tons of dice. (though your venoms will throw 12 dice when you attack with their guns.
If you have 3 or 4 venoms, its still 36 to 48 attacks just for the transports)

They have jet bikes with rending on the hammer of wrath and a possibility of D6 str6 hit on 1 out of every 3 bikes.

They hit hard if you take particular care in using terrain to keep your force alive for the opponents's turn and still mobile the subsequent turns.

As others have mentioned, Dark Eldar, especially if you play in a more casual enviroment they have so many fun units to collect, that mean you can have so much variety for different games.

I had bought my wife the Lelith model to paint some time ago. And I do like some of their range. Maybe that is the way to go.

Still difficult as I am between Nids and DE at this point i think.

Any suggestion for a starter 500 point army? I really know nothing about DE.

I would go with Kabalite Warriors in Raiders as your two troops, as Wyches really are poor at the moment and Dark Eldar are hard enough to learn as they are.

Reavers are also a fun unit to have if you really wanna embrace the speed.

If I had to play an escalation game starting at 500 pts, this is basically what I would go with (though it is 5 pts over, so you would need to cut something. Probably the Raider's dark lance since it is setup to deliver the Grotesques and the Heamonculus)

++ Dark Eldar: Codex (2014) (Combined Arms Detachment) ++

+ HQ +

Haemonculus [Close combat weapon, Flesh Gauntlet, Splinter Pistol]

+ Elites +

Grotesques
··Grotesque X 3
··Raider [Dark Lance, Enhanced Aethersails, Nightshield]

+ Troops +

Kabalite Warriors [4x Kabalite Warrior]
··Kabalite Warrior with special weapon [Blaster]
··Venom [Splinter Cannon x 2]

But would really like to add a succubus for an HQ and either Reavers or Scourges.

I know a 5x squad of Haywire (4 or 5 HW blasters?) is 120; and
a 6x unit of reavers with 2 caltrops and a blaster is 136.

What would be a good combination with these?

I know i will have to get my hands on a codex sooner or later but i don't know anyone that i can borrow it from and I am not even positive yet that i will start this army so i am stuck between a rock.... I appreciate all the help.

So after obtaining the codex and discussing the list possibilities on dark city, I have come up with a list that I can start building in blocks.

First things first, HQ will be a succubus attached to an archon court of 3 Sslyth in a Venom.

Warrior Venom units with blasters will round out the troops (up to 3 for 1000 points)

Then 3 units of 3 reavers with caltrops only to start. 10 scourges with max HWBS will be the fun, less competitive unit that I am forcing in. To make this competitive I would drop the scourges for more warriors and reavers at 1000.

Thanks guys
