I'm looking to get back into FOW, I have heard on some forums that a regular Panzerkompanie isn't very good (Out of Grey Wolf). Is that true? I love the idea of running an all tank army. My army would be something along the lines of 2 command StuGs, 2x 4 Panzer IVs, 3 Panthers, 3 StuGs at 1850. Most the ideas were based on this article..

..which may be a little outdated but has some good ideas. Anyway, what do you guys think, Can a pure CV panzer army do well (or at least not terrible) in a semi-competitive setting?

He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.

Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.

And he will hold the line.

Bill Wilcox of WWPD has some recent suggestions (I don't think it's the same article you linked).

The problems with panthers are that they are great against Russian but get eaten alive by the western allies. My favorite panzer list is.
2 hq pz4s
3 platoons of 4 pz4s
Nobel werfers
Pumas
Mobile AA platoon
In some of the higher point games you can add more and stugs are an even trade out for pz4s so if you like them take some of those.this list has lots of veteran tanks, recon, smoke ,and AA

you can run an effective panzer company, but you need support as well as tanks.

I'm currently looking at a panzer list from Italy, where everything has a role

HQ 2 panzer IV
4 panzer IV(workhorse platoon, shoots, assaults, contests)
3 panthers (tank killers)
4 semovente 105/25 (infantry killers)
2 8-rad (Recce)
2 flakpanzer 38t (AA)
2 Nebelwerfers + trucks (smoke)

Covers all bases, but loses out on offensive fire due to these compromises

I am a dedicated SS PAnzer player. depends on what theater.I usually run LW SS Wiking or 12th SS Hitler Youth. But overall i prefer the mixed battlegroup formations of the SS from Grey Wolf.

Is an all tank army viable? I've only ever tried with Romanians.... didn't work out too well as my biggest tank was a panzer 4...

That aside, I've noticed FoW is very much a combined arms game. I always run at least one nice infantry platoon (pioneers if I can afford it) to dig enemies off objectives and whatnot. Some sort of smoke is also a very good idea IMO, especially if your opponent has lots of very good AT units.

Just my 2 cents

Combined Arms is usually the way to go if you can. But a Romanian all-tank formation has another problem. For assaults (and you're going to have to assault something sooner or later), you want big platoons. Big platoons will inflict more hits on the defending platoon, and aren't affected as much by adverse defensive fire. Romanian tank platoons only have three vehicles, so it limits their effectiveness in assaults.

Which is exactly the reason I have a fat unit of T34's in my Motorizata list

OP make sure you take at least one unit of infantry or at least some StuG's with assault riders. If you can get StuH's, or something else with breakthrough guns, those could be a handy thing to have as well.

Basically, you really need something to handle enemy infantry, because regular tanks, German tanks in particular, struggle to shift large infantry platoons off of objectives.
