Posted this in the army section, and didn't get many bites. Its a big list, I and 5 of my friends are going to take a day and play 4k a side 1v1, we are going to be playing a Maelstrom mission so its not necessarily a throw away typical Apocalypse game. We are going to budget 6-7 hours to try and finish it.

Here was the list I posted...

Grey Knights (Nemesis Strike Force)

Draigo

Librarian with extra mastery level and Domina Liber Daemonica

10x Terminators w/ 2x psycannons, 4x halberds, and 2x hammers

Storm Raven w/ TL Lascannon and TL MM
Storm Raven w/ TL plasma Cannon and TL MM

Dreadknight w/ Teleporter, Great Sword, and heavy Incinerator
Dreadknight w/ Teleporter, Psilencer, and heavy Incinerator

1st allied 3rd company

Lysander

10x Tacticals w/ Grav Gun, Heavy Bolter, Vet Sergeant, and Drop Pod
10x Tacticals w/ Grav Gun, Heavy Bolter, Vet Sergeant, and Drop Pod

3x Centurion Devastators w/ Grav Cannons and Omiscope

Storm Raven w/ asault Cannon and TL MM

2nd Allied 3rd company

Librarian w/ extra Mastery level and Bones of Osrak

10x tacticals 2/ Multi Melta, Melta Gun, Vet Sergeant, and Drop Pod

3x Centurion Devastators w/ 3x Lascannon, 3x Missile Launchers, and Omnicscope

Spartan Assault Vehicle

Knight Paladin

I have Draigo and the GK librarian joining the Grav Centurions, the Fist Librarian sticking close to the Las Centurions and Lysander joining the Terminators in the Spartan.

Draigo can port the Centurions around, and the Drop Pods can help out the shunting Dreadknights. The only static unit is the Las Centurions, and only question mark is how soon my Ravens hit the table.

My opponent is bringing unbound Blood Angels, because the new Angel dex kind of hosed the lists he used to run.

I realize that unbound has pissed a lot of people off, but for christs sake its the way it is now, I used to visit the army list section, but now it just seems like its the same old stuff, not that previous editions didn't do the same thing, but come on.

I for one, like writing higher than 1850 lists.

So, no one replies to your army list and this means no one has fun with 40k anymore?

Or, GW has supposedly told people to play unbound, but no one's biting, and this means they're not having fun?

You're a bit of a strange one, aren't you?

I'm one of these boring squares, I play 1500-1850 points, no unbound, and you know why? It's because that's the way I like it. I literally could not care any less if you disagree, and I find it mindboggling that you don't understand how people can have fun with their hobby even though they don't like the exact same things as you.

Chill out, and accept the facts that different people like different things and that you're probably in the minority when it comes to the whole unbound thing. You can still enjoy 40k your way.

I play with friends.

I pretty much always write fun or themed lists. I try and make them competitive, but certain unit choices will be used because of coolness.

I run 1500-1750 point lists, and they are pretty much always battleforged. I'm old school. If I dont have a HQ and two Troops I feel like I'm cheating.

Although saying that, I have liked the new FOC choices I have, where I can get a couple extra elites or Hq slots by using a supplement FOC. But I still keep to their requirements. No unbound.

That is not what I meant at all. I am not criticizing you for wanting to play competitively, I just find it odd, that people can't or won't even consider the idea of larger games. Whether we like it or not unbound is here to stay and whether you like it or not its here.

You may find this funny but I have never even played an unbound list, but I have been tempted to try one out. I like playing various sized games, but I really like playing in bigger games and if I were to go strictly by the crowd here, it would seem like its all competition all the time.

An unbound list is not always a large list. Your list is actually a Battleforged list if you put the units into different detachments like you did in the Army List section.

So I don't think it has anything to do with building unbound lists. Plenty of people play huge games occasionally for fun.

There just isn't much to talk about over a huge list like that. When playing a huge game you just kind of throw as much as you have models for onto the board, drink some beers, and enjoy a nice long game of 40k.

Why I don't consider larger games: because they aren't fun. The game takes way too long, the table gets way too cluttered, and IGOUGO goes from annoying to "I'll go take a lunch break while you move your models". At least Apocalypse (which can be fun once a year or so) doesn't pretend to be anything more than an excuse to put all of your models on the table and then put them back in the box.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Sometimes I will get my stuff out just to take a picture or two, as for the cluttered table, we will probably be playing on a 4x8 so that the table isn't so cluttered.

Is 4k a side so horrible? What is the biggest game you will play?

Yes.

2k per side, and I prefer 1500 or so.

I do play fun lists. My meta just has a different idea of fun than most others. Our idea of fun is farsight bomb trip tides against 6 wave serpents and 2 wraithknights. We tone it down for the noobs but we help guide them with their list building so they'll be able to keep up once they're ready for 1850 games against our real lists.

I tend to build themed lists not so much fun lists because a themed list is a fun list to me.

The list section is for competative play, so of obviously you're going to see the same suggestions and units over and over again, because they're the better units in the book.

If you're just playing a game for the sake of rolling dice and having fun, then you don't need our advice on how to build your list competatively 'cause you're having fun running the units that you want to use/see on the table rather than just what's good/efficient.

With bigger games there's no real limit to what you can take, so there's no compromises to be bade between taking enough anti-air OR enough anti-hoarde since you can easily take sufficient amounts of both. In your list for example, you've got AA covered with your Ravens, Hoardes covered with Tacticals and the Paladin, Anti Tank covered with your Dev Cents, MC's covered with the Dreadknights and Grav Cents and 2+ covered with the grav Cents, PC's on the stormraven and weight of fire.

You've taken good units out of the codexes you've used, the only thing missing is Thunderfire cannons and you've traded Smashface for Lysander. About the only thing you've got left to optimise here is the removing the Vet sargent upgrades, the tactical weapons loadouts and the lascannon on the storm raven.

Other than that, it's a list full of competative choices, so saying that you've witten a "fun" list may be true (it may well be fun for you), but it's also nothing but competative choices with the occassional minor suboptimal choice for weapons or upgrades. Sure, you didn't take 3 dreadknights with Teleporter, heavy psycannon and heavy incinerator, but then again at 4k, they're probably not that much of an issue, so it doesn't matter.

I also think you're underselling the time required, as I'd be surprised to hear you got through 4 turns in 6 hours with 4k per side.

I ran a fun list of Necrons I knew would get slaughtered, but it fit the scenario my opponent and I were playing. We had a great game and it was a good way for me to start learning the new edition(hadn't played in a year and a half, and only a couple games before that)

I think by nature of someone designing and playing a list makes it a fun list, at the very least for one person.

See I was just hoping to start some discussion on something other than tournament competitive play. I don't write lists thinking its a bad list, and not trying to win, just that it might be a good fun list. I was running daemon flying circus, and double Riptide lists, I like playing in tournaments, going to play in a 30k tournament at Adepticon in a few months.

Dracius is right, with 4k its easier to plan for every contingency but is that all bad? Read a thread or an article awhile back on whether the TAC list is dead, and hope it isn't true.

What is wrong with the Vet Sergeants? Granted they are podding in, and their survival chances are pretty slim to begin with, so maybe I shouldn't worry so much about failing morale checks. Also my opponent is going to be running at least two Ravens himself, so I was thinking the Lascannon Raven wouldn't be such a bad choice, considering Ravens have immunity to melta.

As for the Dreadknights, only have two and haven't finished painting my Thunderfire cannons. One of the guys in my gaming group is kind of anti named character, I love em personally, which is why I am bringing Lysander. As for Lysander I love the idea of sticking him in the Spartan and attaching him to the GK terminators.

big games are not fun. Not only to they help people who have recast titans and handicap all those who only have a 1500army and maybe some ally, but also take damn long to play.
IGYG is not ment for more then 2k pts and at more then 3k a good build army can destroy half an opposing one turn1, and I don't class such things as fun.

I think most people sit down and write fun lists. It's a game so most of us are here to have fun. Thing is, the definition of 'fun' varies from.one person to the next.

i am always trying new things with my codex, i currently run a mixed wing list that doesnt star any of the big three in games over 1500 points (le gasp no azreal, belial or sammy so edgy)

i like formations and datasheets and wish we had more of them for my army. im hoping one day we get a codex update and a supplement, thatd be nice. enough of this monowing or bust garbadge that everyone spews it makes me sick. its like f you think about fielding something generic you get death threats.

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

I think up fun lists all the time, then throw out the idea because it's too uncompetitive for me to bother with. Losing a few games I can deal with, going into every game knowing I'm at a huge disadvantage because I like warp talons and want an army of nothing but then and raptors is just depressing.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.
