So I was wondering, if each army had to be from a country on earth, where would they be from? Let's base this off the fluff of the army and then the history, geography, climate, culture, and perhaps even military of the country. What can you guys come up with?

Too open ended.
"Each army" you mean all of them?
Need limitations.
You could go to IG/AM and play this game forever.

The most obvious would be IG Valhallans as Soviet-era Russians
Tallarns would then be maybe WWII Allies in Africa?
Most people might put Tau under Communist nations?
Dark Eldar could be East African pirate groups?
Finally Milatarum Tempestus (stormtroops) as special forces (SAS is first to come to mind)

I know most aren't countries, but its hard to put such different alien races into comparison with current nations

I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

No, Tau are the US. Lots of hypocrisy about "everyone is equal" in their rigid caste system, a foreign policy centered around "bringing freedom" to anyone who has territory or resources they want, and a military that relies on advanced technology over sheer numbers. The IG are the communists with their mass hordes and battles of attrition. They even have commissars, troops riding around in Soviet APCs, etc.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I see what you mean, especially the whole 'Hey, why don't we give you guys some 'freedom' by invading your planet / country and taking all your resources' aspect- never really thought of it that way, i was just going with the flow of everyone seeming to call them 'space commies'

Space Wolves, and especially their home world of Fenris are pretty much a running joke about what Brits think of Canada; wildlife that tries to kill you at every turn (even the herbivores), @$$numbing cold winters, snow 11 months of the year, summer is hotter than hell and some areas are still littered with dino bones.

Brits think that of Canada?

I don't think that of Canada...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Tau could also be like the EU; constantly expanding and saying that everyone's equal even though France and Germany are clearly in charge.

Self-loathing Americans are funny. Wah, wah, we're the worst because we hate blacks/invade other countries/steal resources/kill brown people/pollute the planet/spread our cancerous pop culture/force our ideals on others/we're Judeo-Christian/etc., etc., ad nauseum. This thread was kinda doomed from the start.

Obviously, America is Space Marines, coz they're awesome and everyone cries about them getting all the best stuff. 'Murica! Feth yeah!

The Puppies themselves, though we did have some sizable Viking colonies on our east coast at one point.

As for the world of Fenris itself, yeah, it's absolutely based on Canada.
Consider that last year, Winterpegers jokingly thought of Mars as a viable vacation spot, since their city was actually colder at one point...

The Imperial Guard certainly use Warsaw Pact style battle tactics, but this doesn't really have much to do with politics, besides the commissars. There's nothing inherently communist about Soviet Deep Battle theory or Soviet Operational Battle.

The Tau certainly do use Western/NATO tactics, as do some of the Spacer Marine Chapters. Socially and politically the argument could be made that the Tau do resemble the US somewhat.

We're watching you... scum.

"For the Greater Good" has not and never will be the philosophy of the United States. The belief that the collective has more value than the individual is the road to tyranny. Doing the "Greater Good" must be an individual choice of sacrifice. It's the difference between a man jumping on a hand grenade to save his buddies and a company of conscripts being ordered to fill a ditch with their bodies so that a tank can safely cross.

I've never met anyone who thought that of Canada... The wildlife trying to kill you thing is definitely Australia.

Well just by looking.

Orks: Based in small parts on Germany. Their helmets (some of which are Stahlhelms and Pickelhaube) and the fact they use grenades with a handle is meant to reflect this. In fact "blitz-krieg" is used to describe many of their old tactics in early editions and their invasion of Armageddon in the epic lore was compared to Stalingrad (that is they have to defeat the imperium or push as far ahead before the season of fire (Armageddon's version of the russian winter) sets in.)

Tau: The Japanese "Greater Co-Prosperity Sphere".

Space Marines: Germanic Fuedal Knights with the Imperial Fists being Prussians and even adopting the Junker model.

Imperium: Based on many authoritarian regimes and empires throughout history but with a theocratic twist. Imperial Russia perhaps comes the closest.

Chaos Space Marines and Cultists: Old european druids and vikings who believed in savage gods. But also pre-chilvery knights who took and plundered at will.

No, that's what we think of Australia - killy wildlife. For snow, yeah, that's how we often see Canada. But also the North and South poles, and Russia. And there is a sort of association we have between Russia and Wolves. If anything, I'd have said the SW were more Russian-themed. Stereotypical alcohol-obsessives in a cold dangerous land.

*Note, this is based on stereotypes and not facts. I don't want to see WW3.

That's not true at all!
First of all, it's Australia that has the "wildlife killing at every turn".
Secondly, America is "hot as hell in summer", and I have no idea about the dino bones part...
And last, but not least, we in Britain Land KNOW it snows all 13 months of the year in Canadia Land! Yeah, we know about Smarch!
Shheeesh.
