Can anyone point me in the direction of how to make your own battlemats like the ones Frontline gaming or Gamemat.eu sell?

I don't know of any guides, but it probably comes down to paying a company to print an image on a mat of that material.

Therefore it's probably no easier or cheaper than buying one.

There's lots of companies out there that make them. Just google "Custom gaming mats" and you'll find lots. Most of them make them for card games, but I'm sure you could contact a few of those companies and ask if they can do custom sizes.
