Hello everyone, my name is Seth Robinson. My brother and I are independent game designers, but we recently turned our attention to what we felt was a needed gaming accessory - a great looking, reasonably priced hexagonal terrain system. I wanted to share this with everyone in case you would be interested. It is perfect for Warhammer and 40K too. We are a bit partial to Fantasy ourselves (as you can see from our photos), but sci-fi and modern war games work as well.

We just launched BattleHex on Kickstarter. It is a modular, hexagon-based terrain system that is ready out of the box. This project developed out of a desire to get some really good looking terrain on the table in a simple, cost-effective way. The BattleHex website is up at http://www.BattleHexSystem.com where we will put all of the information after the campaign. If any of you live in the EU, we are excited to offer EU friendly shipping for the KS campaign with free shipping to the UK and France. Please let me know if you have any questions. Check out the campaign; we would love to have you as part of our Kickstarter community!

Cheers,
Seth Robinson

Battletech? But you'd need a pretty huge table!

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

My issues with these sorts of things stem from everything being in discrete units. With the exception of the river, you'll note that all the details on each hex are contained within that hex. That means that rather than having natural-looking terrain, you have a table that's filled with these odd blotches of terrain, surrounded by strips/straight lines of empty ground.

Terrain needs to flow (much like that river! ), and grouping it into small patches makes it look unnatural.

It looks just like Battllelore terrain.... a game which I loved... but not sure I'd want to play it on a 6x4 table

My brother and I are big Warhammer fans, so we've been playing our games on this when at home (rather than the green tablecloth). Any skirmish game works, too, like the Hobbit.

Yeah, that is the nature of the beast in some respects. We don't intend for this to be the end-all, be-all of gaming terrain. There are definite advantages and disadvantages. The segmented terrain features you mention are one. But we feel like in some arenas, something like this that is quick and easy to pull out and set up would be perfect. The portability and storage is key, too.

For anyone interested in helping us spread the word, we are giving away a copy of our board game, War of Kings, to someone who shares this Facebook post.

What keeps these tiles from moving when you drag unit trays across the surface and when people stub their toe on a table leg?

Hex terrain is more common in Historical wargaming (see the current WI for a great example). You don't really need to be limited by the hex grid the same way as you you are not limited by 2' square board tiles. Though it's just peachy if you do use such a system.

Anyway the aren't that aesthetically pleasing (to me) and flat board (card?) is a no go. Kallistra do much more attractive 3D hex terrain amongst others.

Well, the hexes themselves lock together pretty well especially if you are sliding toward the middle of the table, but when we played full fledged warhammer battles, we put down a non-slip pad beneath them. Very similar to what you might put under a rug. That guy makes them impossible to slide. At our FLGS, the gaming table they had was fine as-is. Just depends on the surface, I suppose.

Hey everyone, we've had quite a few developments over the course of the campaign that I want to share with everyone.

First, we recently just unlocked elevation risers. These are 1" thick hexagons that fit beneath the tiles to give your battlefield elevation. They can be stacked on top of each other for different tiers, and are paintable as well.

We also developed a set of templates to add grids to the tiles if your game of choice requires it! They worked our wonderfully, and we made both a hexagonal grid and an isometric square grid. Here is what the hex grid will allow:

Thanks, everyone! Just 6 days left, and we are almost at our funding goal. Looking forward to reaching that double-sided tile stretch goal. = )

Nothing against you guys but did you do any research on the name RAINN Studios, I mean just follow this link.

Haha, yeah we knew about that organization. They look like they do some good work, but since we're in a pretty unrelated field we still went with it. The RAINN stands for Robinson Applications and INNovations in our case.

I did want to invite anyone who hasn't had a chance to stop by and check out the project. We have been tearing through our stretch goals. We now have doublesided tiles, lots of extra art, a linen texture on the tiles, and half hexagons to straighten the sides of the board. All of the support we have had from the Kickstarter community has been very humbling, and we are very grateful for everyone. Hope to see you on the Kickstarter page soon. We just have a little over 18 hours left now! = )
