The Edge is a skirmish scaled 28 mm wargame set in the post-apocalyptic world with medieval and steampunk aesthetic influences. It’s mechanic combines the traditional wargame approach and solutions from mana-based card games. In a world destroyed by cataclysmic Judgement Day that left behind not only havoc and desolation, but also beneficial crystals and mysterious portals, remnants of humanity are unified under the authoritative rule of The Chapter, the priesthood of The One, a god of technology, defending humanity against Demons, conquerors of whole worlds, which one day came out of the portals. In the bloody war that followed, from the dead human bodies, broken machine parts and power of the crystals new entity was born by ominous and barely understood method – The Faceless, beings deprived of autonomic consciousness and emotions, devouring both metal and flesh, through which implementations every creature evolves on its own.
The humanity found a way to use the scattered crystals to create and empower mechanical blessings of The One, but the Demons have their own reasons to gather them and even The Faceless have their purpose to seek the crystals, as the power that dwells in them is fuelling the hulks of their physical forms.
Project The Edge is developed by Awaken Realms painting studio located in Poland. As one of the biggest painting studios worldwide we have vast experience in dealing with miniatures of various companies, and that experience will be reflected in everything what we can offer in the Edge project, especially into miniature design, highest quality of casting (our 3D print technology allows us to get the level of details of 0,016mm!), interesting background material and finally, unique game mechanics.
We are aiming to launch our Kickstarter in March 2015 with an almost complete product, ready to ship within 6 months.
This thread will feature new snippets of information every few days – new renders and casted models, snippets of information about game mechanics, world background and so on. This is very exciting project for us and we are humbly asking for any feedback and comments from you. Feel free to ask us about anything what comes to your mind and whatever you want to know about The Edge project - we decided to develop it together with the community that has supported us so much before.
When the first priests of The One were warning the humanity about the coming cataclysm, no one listened. And after the Day of Judgement, those, who survived the eradication of former civilization finally believed. The remnants of humanity, sheltered in seven huge metropolies, called Refuges became unified as The Chapter under the guidance of Priests of The One, and with the power of the crystals, scattered through the world by the blasting meteors, rebuild the civilization from rumble, shaping everything in the image of The One, glorifying the technological advance and implementing it in every aspect of life. Though uniting the humans, The Chapter itself is internally divided, and various doctrines and philosophies of each individual metropoly are seeking to become dominant. When the demonic threat emerged from the hidden portals in the craters left from the apocalyptic events, The Chapter, the protectors of humanity remnants, became the first and only defence line against the ruthless foe. Already dangerous railways and routes to crystal mines became even more vulnerable with the Demons preying outside, forcing the Chapter to strengthen their protection.
The Demons
Demonic society is divided into three castes. First, the brutal ones, being the backbone of strike forces and dedicating their whole lives and culture to martial prowess and art of fighting. Second, the terror ones, learning about the fears and vulnerable points of invaded cultures, striking from the shadows and spreading terror through the enemy ranks. Third, the intelligent ones, utilizing their mind as a deadly weapon, using the magic born from the crystals power and commanding whole forces in times of war. All three castes struggle for influence in the whole society, but all understands, that jousts may not turn into war, there is a bigger obstacle uniting all three castes. The place from which Demons came from is a barren, worn-out, devoid of resources and overpopulated world. Several times the Demons were forced to spread to other worlds in order to survive as a species. Latterly, the conquered worlds began once again lacking resources to maintain overgrown demonic population and another conquest was vital.
One day after the cataclysm, when new humanity was at its peak, the portals sleeping into blastscape awaken, spewing out a new threat. Demons fell upon the unsuspecting human dwellings, and only thanks to The Chapter and unsuspected appearance of Faceless were driven out. But not for long.
The Faceless
In the height of the bloody war between the Chapter and Demons, on one of the battlefields the unthinkable took place. Born from the broken machine parts, left human carcasses and the arcane power of crystals left to rampage wild, the first of The Faceless creature appeared. Being not driven by consciousness, showing no emotion towards anyone, begun consuming both metal and flesh, demonic and human alike. Every devoured part was being implemented to the creature’s structure, changing its form and abilities. The Faceless shortly after its birth begun to seek the crystals. Their power is believed to be the only mean of holding together and driving forth their hybrid forms. Only thanks to their appearance the demonic incursion failed, no one was prepared to fight such an enemy. All communication attempts, both from human and demonic side was fruitless, so their goal is yet unknown.
Gameplay: In our gameplay mechanic we wanted to bring something totally fresh and really fun to play, so we decided to bring original idea of combining miniature wargaming with a mana-base card game. Everything will be resolved by the deck of forty cards with value from one to four and several special cards of effect, spells or abilities.
The gameplay also will focus upon the gathering and using crystals – each crystal token will make your mana pool bigger, what allows you to use (precisely talking, spend your mana amount on) special cards from your “hand” affecting singular targets with special effects or abilities, or even to influence several targets or whole battlefield. This mechanic will create environment inducing players to think strategically, use currently possessed resources wisely and plan ahead opposing to common solution of “just getting rid of the whole enemy force”. Sometimes better solution will be to spend more time gathering crystals to prepare a powerful spell to turn the tides of battle.
Each faction will be gathering crystals and using the mana pool generated by them in a little different, but distinctive way – this will differentiate the factions further in the means of gameplay and turn the game even more interesting. Thinking how to prevent the enemy from gather precious resources and still being able to acquire as much as possible, bearing in mind that what you can do in the game depends of how much mana you’ve obtained from the crystals. The mana and cards will be almost sole mechanic factors - classic dice will only be used to determine some of the card effects.
This will be a skirmish game launched in march 2015 on Kickstarter, developed as a test before potentially expanding the Edge as a full-fledged battle wargame.

"Unimaginably ancient xenos artefact somewhere on the planet, hive fleet poised above our heads, hidden 'stealer broods making an early start....and now a bloody Chaos cult crawling out of the woodwork just in case we were bored. Welcome to my world, Ciaphas."
Inquisitor Amberley Vail, Ordo Xenos
"I will admit that some Primachs like Russ or Horus could have a chance against an unarmed 12 year old novice but, a full Battle Sister??!! One to one? In close combat? Perhaps three Primarchs fighting together... but just one Primarch?" da001
Is that an actual cast rather than the print? It seems to be showing print artefacts in the form of layering, I would hope you could clean that up some before creating a mould.
While most of the concept art is amazing and I eagerly await for the KS, I dislike the very soft edges in the knight models. To me it makes the armor details look like they are made of clay rather than metal.
The rest do look great though and I eagerly await more printed models to show.

I wonder if that is a spray paint artefact?
It would be good to see a cast without any on

I am constantly amazed by both the quality of sculpting and imagination that seems to be coming out these days.
Looks really evocative, I had the Dark Souls single piano-chord background music playing in my head while looking at these, definitely feels like it has that vibe about it!

I was wondering that, too. That cast, if it is one, looks quite rough. Please try to make sure you have this worked out airtight, and take some pics of an unpainted cast... maybe it will look better.

This is actually first prototype - roughness you can see is at some parts are either the 3D print layers or the white paint fabric (those who paint knows that white paint can be really grainy).
Anyway, we will be grinding it once again and cast it again to have all the surfaces as well prepared for mass production as possible. The hammer will be re-done as well to make handle thicker.
We are painting studio ourselves and after all the Fine Cast models we know we don't want to follow the same path ourselves
The reason we showed you the model here was mainly to show, that all those little details from render are actually on the models thanks to this pretty amazing 3D printing technology.
Thanks for all the feedback by the way!
We are learning a lot in the process and every piece of information is really useful.
There are multiple possible ways to serve the One – perhaps the most honorable one is the privilege of wearing the armor of Holy Knight to wreak havoc on the battlefield. Only the purest members of society can wear this suit of armor, specially developed by high priests based on the visions send by The One. Another requirements are abnormal physical strength and perfect discipline – thanks to that Holy Knights combine strength of human body and machine to become perfect weapon. Just a few can withstand those challenging conditions and become worthy of becoming The Chapter’s first line of defense. Knights are part of the Chapter and hold high position within their ranks, even thou they do not possess any technical skills or capabilities. Their fighting prowess and unshaken devotion is sufficient enough.
It’s time for the first update – take a look at our first cast miniature, the Chapter’s Holy Knight:
Miniature is cast with High Quality resin and will be placed either on 32 i 40mm base. You can see now how the small details, such as the icons on armor are looking on the real, painted model, not just on render.
Formerly, we’ve shared with you just one pose of the knight. Today we may announce that we’ve prepared four poses of the Holy Knight with full set of interchangeable weapon options – a Holy Knight may be equipped with a variety of heavy weaponry, such as the hammer, sword and mace, as well as a shield. Perhaps you have ideas on other weapons you would like to use?
Our facebook community have pointed out that size of the mace – for some it was too big. Do you share that opinion?
As always – please, share your thoughts on the model – your feedback is always highly appreciated

There is only one kind of punishment for those who dared to question the One and the chapter – death. However, sinners who broke the law on the smaller scale are offered a choice: they can redeem their deeds by becoming either miner or pilgrim. Rarely any human with common sense choose the second way, even if becoming a miner means serving at least few years at gathering crystals. It is fate happily accepted when confronted with what becoming a Pilgrim means – taking a part in crusades with only heavy mechanical spear as a weapon and no armor.
Most of pilgrims die their first battle – but those who survives long enough to kill seven opponents are given freedom, full redemption and enough gold to live happy for few years. Usually a total renegades, killers and madmen are becoming a pilgrims.
Today we are presenting to you the second update, featuring the Chapter’s Pilgrim renders. Soon the model will be cast in high quality resin.
The Pilgrims are wielding heavy, mechanical spears with shredding, chainsaw blades, being empowered by the crystal-based technology. See the concept art of the model:

The cast knight is cool (although I think he should "choke up" on the weapon handle ). I.e. hold it higher up on the handle / closer to the head of the weapon, like in the render. Otherwise it looks a little off.
Absolutely love the pilgrim!! If there was an option to pledge for a single mini, I will definitely be in for one of these - I can think of a number of uses for him (perhaps with a head swap - could you offer a more "high tech" head as an option, I think s visor could prove quite popular!).

Subject: The Edge - Official news channel - Kickstarter in March 2015! Update! Chapter's Pilgrim
Absolutely love the pilgrim!! If there was an option to pledge for a single mini, I will definitely be in for one of these - I can think of a number of uses for him (perhaps with a head swap - could you offer a more "high tech" head as an option, I think s visor could prove quite popular!).
There will be five head options availble for Pilgrim, maybe some of them will be more appealing to you.
Today we are presenting the first non-chapter update, featuring the Faceless Berserker Alpha renders.
“There are some things, you can never forget. Things, that won’t let you sleep for long weeks. Once you see them… You will understand that. They are different. Somehow much more terrifying than Demons. We can understand Demons - even if they are manifestation of everything that is evil. But there is no clear purpose in the brute force behind those faceless creatures... They can rip a man in half in a second and then feast on his souls. Yes, brother, there are thing you can never forget." - Sir Roderic Malv, one of the Chapters Holy Knights
Faceless were created soon after the Demons came into the world of The Edge. Exact circumstance of their creation are not clear to either Chapter or demon, but the reports state, that first faceless creature were created from human body pierced by a crystal part.
First, they were only half-dead bio-mass wandering around battlefields and feasting on the dead, but soon they evolved into something much more terrifying – they implemented some of the metal parts into their bodies and reached for the next step in their evolution. Faceless takes various forms, but they have few things in common – all of them have a crystal hidden most often in their chests as well as they have usually masks built up from bones or metal (this is where they got their name).
They do not feel emotion and are driven by sole instinct of devouring and evolving – or at least they seems to, as there is little known about them. Sometimes they are called by humans “Soul eaters”, as they are literally sucking life energy from defeated enemies. They are also an unexpected obstacle and a threat for the Demons conquering plans, as they can’t be manipulated and they feel no fear.
When it comes to gameplay, Faceless will be mostly focusing on close combat fight and “growing” with each unit they will defeat. They have are also showing abnormal regeneration skills.
Take a look at more exclusive model preview of Faceless Berserk Alfa! Soon the model will be cast in high quality resin.
The Berserker is using with deadly accuracy the scavenged mechanical parts, now implemented to its body as shredding limbs attached to it's back and sharp claws on the hands

Hi, we’ve shared some model renders and castings recently, but a wargame is not only models, it’s the rules as well. Today we want to share with you some more detailed insight into the basic mechanics of The Edge. We’re still testing and developing the ruleset, with our goal to deliver to you the balanced and fun to play set of rules. With that said, keep in mind that some details may yet be altered, but the “backbone” of the mechanics is monolithic and described for you below.
Overall Look
We want to take our best experience form board games, miniature wargaming and TCG card games. Strategy will be really important factor and taking various approaches will be possible thanks to the usage of crystals mechanics. Thanks to introducing special spells cards we want to give players tools for creating “turn the tide” moments in the game flow. One of the most important assumption we made before sitting to creating rules is that they should be reflecting story as much as possible and help immerse players into universe of The Edge.
Our ambition is creating mechanic background to our game following the rule “easy to learn, hard to master”. We will be trying to put overall game rules very short and intuitive – all the complexity will be brought by the spells you will be able to cast as well as units special active and passive abilities.
Cards and special abilities
Each player will start with the certain set of special spells cards that he will choose as a “deck” and that will be able to globally influence the battlefield. Their effect will be various and each of the faction will have different style of spells. In addition to that almost every unit will have special ability (or more than one) – active or passive. Thanks to that each fight will be actively participated by the players with lots of various moves they can do, rather than merely statistic table clash with dice rolls.
Cards design
Crystals
In our mechanics as well as in the universe we want to put very strong emphasis on the crystals – ultimate source of power that each faction desire for their own reasons. We have designed special crystal tokens to represent them in our game.
Each player will start with few crystal tokens and it will serve him as a mana pool refreshing after every turn. The more crystals you have – the more powerful spells and abilities you will be able to cast. One of the core mechanics will be gathering crystals on the battlefield – than each faction will have their own additional way of earning the crystals.
Crystal Tokens
Controlled Randomness
We want to create a system where biggest part of randomness (for example in fights) will be under some kind of influence of the player. Rather than throwing bunch of dice we want to implement a deck of cards with numbers representing the results. In addition to that each player will have his own deck – therefore throughout the whole game, both players will have same results.
As stated before, our rules are in the stage of active development and testing, therefore things can change a little – but we want to keep the main assumptions and bring you very balanced set of rules that will give you great amount of pleasure, lots of awesome moments to remember and full immersion into the world of The Edge.
What do you think? What are your best and worse adventures with various wargame mechanics?
We have our website finally running as well – please, visit us and tell us what do you think!
Hi! Remember the Chapter's Pilgrim render we’ve shared with you some time ago? Now the model is finally cast and we've already done a test paintjob and put him on a field of arcane crystals!
Once more posting the alternative Pilgrim's heads. How do you like them and which one is your favorite?
How do you like the painted Pilgrim wandering in the natural environment of “The Edge” world?

I'm intrigued by the game mechanics and I've quite gotten to like cards instead of dice, I play Malifaux and Relic Knights and they work very well with cards. I'll keep an eye on this but what material will the miniatures be made from?

Subject: The Edge - Kickstarter in March 2015! Update! One God Story Trailer!
I'm not sold a 100%on the knight, but the pilgrimm is one of the collest mini i've seen in a while.
Well done
The mechanics of the game is really intriguing, if the other minis are as good as the pilgrim, I think I might lift my self imposed kickstarter ban, and pledge on this,
