I'm putting this in the 40k General because i think the scale of armies and size of models makes it one of the larger games; i.e my necron army includes like 80+ warriors and 4 monoliths.
Anywho; Hey guys, so as my armies have grown and grown; i find that storing my models has become the biggest difficulty in collecting more warhammer figurines.
I have ~4000 points of necrons, 3000 points of tyranids, maybe 2000 of imperial guard, and my brother has ~4000 points of tau
anyone have a suggestion for effectively storing them so i can continue my collecting?
I was looking at some shelves at walmart but was wondering if storage bins or like army cases are a better storage solution?
what do you guys use? is it better having models out on display?
feel free to post pics of your setups

One problem of having foam for everything, is that you need foam for everything But I’ve seen pictures of piles of KR boxes or stacks of battlefoam in a closet, and it is a fairly compact way of keeping stuff out of the way and safe.
Storage bins with layers of foam/towels seems a good option for long term storage or moving, but probably not convenient for an active collection.
I just use bookshelves in the basement, but I’ve got the space. If you want to invest a little, you can get china cabinets/ display cases and put everything under glass. Here is an older picture, but it’s a wide shot, so shows my whole setup. The books have since been moved to another case to make for room for minis. My cases and foam live under the table.

ya cost is definitely a big part of determining the best storage solution to me; so as nice as battlefoam cases would be; i'd spend a small fortune in storage if i went that path.
at the moment im thinking about getting 1 or 2 of these shelves
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Edsal-36-W-x-18-D-x-72-H-Ultra-Rack/23597967
set them up in the basement by the wargaming table and enjoy.

All my models are just on my desk. We're in the middle of another pregnancy, so we're redecorating, and I fully intend on getting some display cabinets for my "Not toys, no, don't touch them!"

KR, all the way.
But, it means you have count 1/3 of the cost of the models on top, as everything wants trays. Troops go in generic trays, which are fairly cheap, but some stuff wants a tray of its own.
Drop pods are 4 per box.
Fliers are often a box per model.
Doing this though, they stack well, and if you are going to a game, just grab the trays you need and go.

So I decided to go to the store and look at the shelving in person....found a slightly bigger version for $70. Pretty pleased with how it came out

Billy's are great. I've built enough to get a 4-shelf one built in 17 minutes these days. They have a range of doors, too.
Bookcases aren't too deep to lose stuff at the back, but are shallow enough to wobble if you don't weigh them down or attach them.

The way I store my models is get bubble wrap and a bin, put the models in the bin and cover it with bubble wrap.

Similar to above, not at home for pics
Old Standard Detolf x3
13" Light Bars for each cabinet
I've got them lined up and packed. Anything extra can be thrown in extra foam trays from my Battlefoam bag, which acts as "active" storage many times. Pluck foam trays in boxes or cabinets are a nice out of sight way to store things.

I should have placed another mirror beside the mirror and have the collection stretch infinitely through time.....

Hey the paintball field that I work at uses those same plastic bins. I got some shelf space and I got my tau, tyranids, and Deamonhunters in boxes with egg crate foam layering in between them. Then I got a battle foam...pack 432 for my space wolves, infinity and a few warmachine minis. Though I should put some money to a pack 720 because my 432 is almost full.
