how do you get that excellent dust effect P? Looks like you just paint the model in simple base colors and then go over it with some sort of weathering powder, but I've never gotten anywhere near those results when I've tried to do that.

I'm not master mini painter, but I'm pretty sure that if you give the model a light drybrush (building up the layers) you achieve that affect.

I would try the painting section on these forums. If anybody knows, it'll be those guys, and they're a pretty decent bunch.

You won't get dust effect with dry brushing

Pigment powder with a fixer. I have a tutorial on it

Link to the tutorial?

I've seen one technique that gives similar results, apply it wet (just with water) and then use a brush to dust off the excess after it dries then use a matte varnish to fix it... but I've never gotten great results with it, lol.

For small scales I apply fixer first, then pigment and leave for a few minutes and then brush off till I get the desired effect. It does take practice to get it right though.

Will post a link to the tutorial later as its on my forum (www.guildwargamers.com) and I dont have the link till I get home.

A link would be great, I've looked around a bit on that forum and can't find it, I'd love to see your technique for doing it.

I'll have to look at it tomorrow when I have time to make a profile for that forum.

I figured you had to be doing something different. I've been just dabbing the weathering pigment on and then immediately sealing the model afterwards. Actually works really well for black smudging for smoke, but I've had a lot of trouble getting a good dust effect. I didn't even know that you needed to use a "fixer", so that alone helps quite a bit

It does take a bit of trial and error. Use it on a few models you dont mind mucking up first as practice runs.
