I really don't like the winter guard or the death star in general. Not a big fan.
But does Khao need them to be effective and win? This seems to be the consensus because from what I read, all Khao has if hi Def buffs for its bag o tricks.

That's fairly expensive point wise. And it can buy you a full 10man unit for that pointage

TAC are a support unit, not a front line combat unit.

Khador basically has 3 in-faction infantry that are the best generally speaking. Winter Guard Infantry, Winter Guard Rifle Corps, and IFP. And IFP come in 2 flavors, regular or Black Dragon. And you can have 2 units of Black Dragons.

If you don't like the WGI maybe you should try Rifle Corps with Kovnik Joe. Its still technically a WGDS, but it plays very differently. Instead of combat and short ranged shooting, they bring some surprisingly long range accurate guns.

Khador does need infantry of some kind to be effective. Its really their whole schtick outside of some gimmicky Karchev lists.

Some alternate possibilities are Vlad3 with a bunch of Uhlans or Butcher2 theme force with all the doom reavers.

WG Infantry and Iron Fangs are both strong front-line units that can absorb and dish out a lot of punishment but neither is essential to play the faction. Deathstars are one way to play; if you don't like them go looking for speed buffs instead. Crazy nonlinear caster-on-caster assassination and charging from way, way too far away are both things Khador can pull off well that lead to wins with no deathstars.

It was the consensus, maybe three years ago, when winter guard and kayazy dominated. It's less true now - there is a place for iron fangs,Nyss, boo howlers, cavalry, kommandos even.

Don't think you 'have' to build any one way...

Nyss with Iron Flesh and Valachev are awesome.

Nope, there are other options. Most notably IFP and BDIFP.

But I'd still say the WGI death star is a top end unit.

In no particular order I would rank the top 3 infantry units for Khador as WGI, IFP and BDIFP.

WGI used to be the king of the hill, but there is much more infantry hate that deals with high DEF in the game now. But the bring so much to the table while they are not the auto-include they used to be they still are popular and powerful.

My brother plays Khador and he just said "Eff it" and took a unit of WGI and a unit of pikemen.

I see a lot more Mercs in Khador than I see WGI lately. Even Kayazy seem to be making a comeback.

Are they helpful? Sure. Mandatory? Not by a long shot.
