Me and a few friends are thinking about getting into Warmachine and Hordes. Rules wise, do we need to only pick up the MKII WM and Hordes rule books? I noticed there are a lot of other books out there and was wondering if it would be beneficial to go ahead and grab those as well?

Rules wise you'll need the MKII WM OR the MKII Hordes book. You don't need both.

As for the faction books and expansions, you only need them if you wan't to read about the fluff or are a completionist. The miniatures come with the full rules for them.

If you have a smartphone or tablet, I recommend that you pick up War Room instead of the faction books / expansion books (if you aren't interested in the fluff). For about 50 dolars you'll get the full rules for each and every model of all factions and its always updated with the new releases.

That way,then left

The main rulebooks (Prime and Primal) cover most of it. Most of the rest is either the cards that come with the models

The other books are mostly fluff, but have the rules for Colossals/Gargantuans (The larger warjacks/warbeasts) and Battle Engines. Who are usually less common.
One way to have all the rules ,if you have a tablet type device or a fancy phone is the app War room

Play as many games as you can with the battlebox or get the two person starter box.

Just as a forewarning, the game isnt about giant mechs & beasts playing punch-out. A lot of the most effective builds run infantry heavy. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just as a heads up. i got into it thinking I could run like 5 heavy jacks (because it fit pts wise) but quickly found I'd just get swarmed.

It is still a fun game & I hope you enjoy it, I just don't want you to have the wrong idea like I did (though I DO now enjoy the game, I'm not trying to dissuade you). Yes some caster run jack/beast heavy better than others but you will almost always want 2+ units of infantry for support.

That said look into the army in a box if you're interested in getting a bigger start. They are quite the deal but may not come out for a bit depending what you want:
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2015/01/privateer-press-quite-deal.html

For the very basic I suggest you play WM Vs WM or H vs H. Just to avoid confusion. You can download the quickstart rules online hordes just google for WM. But after that you want either prime or primal (both MkII) and at least a battlebox (if not an all-in-one)

There is also a 2 player starter set for each that comes with a battlebox + a unit and a mini rulebook. But thats limited to Circle Vs legion or Khador vs Menoth.

I'll echo the same warning.

There are ways to run Jack/Beast heavy, but that usually involves very specific casters/locks and army lists with very little variation.

PP are doing some things to change this meta, but it's not helping that much.

A good way to look at it is Beasts & Jacks are your tanks.

Tanks are great for doing heavy damage & breaking lines. But if a tankl has no support it is likely to get swarmed by infantry & have incendiaries rammed down its air intakes.

Khador actually drew my attention because I like the limited warjack thing backed up by infantry. I really like Legion of Everblight but I do agree it would probably be better to learn WM v WM instead of WM v H. Is it worth picking up the War Room app and the rule books/codexes or are most people just going off the app?

The app is a good buy. I would also buy the main rule book (Prime/primal)MkII however you don't NEED each of the "Forces of..." books or the expansions really. The rules come with the models on their cards but if you want them to have an easy refferece / read the fluff go for it.

Qualifier on this: It depends on your army. Warbeasts are core for Legion, the army is usually built around the warbeasts and their support instead of the mixture of infantry and warbeasts/'Jacks you find elsewhere; Cyriss is similarly extremely good at warjack-heavy forces.

Consider also that what people win tournaments with doesn't have to dictate what you do; Warmachine is a lot more balanced than some games, and you can win bad matchups with skilled play. This doesn't mean it doesn't matter at all what you do and don't take within a faction, but it does mean that it's easily possible to up and ignore the Internet's favourite advice (never, ever run multiple warjacks with Khador, always, always take a WG/IFP deathstar unit), tell them to shove it, and play fine and have plenty of fun anyway.

You'll still need the Core rule book for the game that you wan't to play, the core game rules are not in the app in any organized way, but other than that people will just use the app instead of the other army books / expansions (unless you wan't to read the fluff).

Everyone should buy a battle box(they're roughly all 15 pts each) and just play a bunch of games with those till you've got the basics. Each comes with the quick-start rules which is all you need to get started. Then you'll need either Prime or Primal Mk2. Not both, they're 95% identical. And the differences are easily covered by the quick-start rules for the other magic system.

After battle boxes, going up to 25 will let you begin feeling out units. And once you've got how they work down you can go up to the regular level which is 35 or 50 pts.

And if you are joining up with friends or have people who may want to try it out the 2 player sets are even better. If you split the cost it is about the same as a battlebox. But you get more models and a mini rulebook.

I really appreciate all the feedback in this thread, nice to have a community that helps new players out. My friend is picking up Cygnar and I believe I have settled on Menoth. Is the battle group and the choir a good choice to start off with? I believe that will get it to 15 points?

Battlegroup and Choir is a solid choice.

Choir is pretty much mandatory. Or at the very least that unit that [madeupstatistics] nine of every ten lists [/madeupstatistics] feature.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

Haha from what I've seen it seems like you are correct. Any recommendation to bring the list to 25 points?

A full unit of Exemplar Errants and their UA is exactly 10pts. They are a solid unit that I see played a lot.

The Battlebox (11 points) plus a min choir (4 members, 2 points) and a vassal of Menoth (2 points, not the Vassal Meckanik) is a good 15 point starter. Add a full unit of Errants and you've got a decent 25 points.

You will eventually want to change out the Battlebox jacks however - all have their place, but Kreoss1 (the Battlebox caster) prefers a more shooty battlegroup. A Reckoner or Redeemer is a great first jack to buy.

Also, if you get the Menoth crusader/Templar/vanquisher multi-kit - the parts are interchangeable with the Crusader in the Battlebox, so you can magnatise both to give you a few options.

Choir, Vassals, Wracks (to a lesser degree), Paladins of the Wall (also to a lesser degree) all can be solid beginner choices

(But take everything I say with a grain or salt, as I have very limted experiance with Menoth)

And have a look at the Faction Forums on PP's site, very useful for some faction advice
