Howdy!

I recently stumbled upon MS ERA. Immensely excited by a 'cheap' gundam strategy game, I immediately started to eat up all the info I could find!
http://www.ironhands.com/gundamsog.htm - Example figs
http://www.ironhands.com/MSera.htm - Rule Set

However, along my searching I found that the Strategy of Gundam Figure sets are no longer around in the large amounts they used to be.

So I was curious if anyone knew of some other source of cheap Gundam figures in the 1/300 scale area.

I have quite a few of the old WizKids / Heroclick style Mech Warrior figures. but I don't feel those fit in the Gundam style.

All help and suggestions are appreciated!

TL DR - Looking for cheap Gundam Figures in 1/300ish scale. Similar to the old Strategy of Gundam figs.

Not a bad Idea! That Robotech Tactics game did come out. I'll have to check on the prices of those models.

There are other scales but most of them only have short runs.
You could try gashapon figures as they range from as small about 2.5 to 10 cm in different degrees of detail.

Did some more research and found two more styles of SOG

Gundam STANDart: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR4.TRC2.A0.H0.XGundam+STANDart.TRS0&_nkw=Gundam+STANDart&_sacat=0
Gundam Assault Kingdom: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=gundam+assault+kingdom&_frs=1

They are pretty cheap (around $6 a model)
And are the perfect scale!

Now I just need to find where to get those bases he uses.

Looks like GW's long bases, but not sure. any Ideas?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
There also seems to be an Action Figure line called Gundam Ultimate Operation

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=gundam+ultimate+operation&_frs=1

Not sure on scale yet, will do some more research.

As others have pointed out Sean Patten's "Necromundicon" and various "Iron Archives" sites are an amazing resource for gamers. Though rarely updated, I still find my self back there often digging through the pages. My one advice to anyone exploring it is to look in every wargaming section, even those that you might not initially be interested in as there's really interesting techniques and projects hidden throughout.

As for bases, I'm not certain exactly the size, but proxie models has some very affordable bases that might work http://www.proxiemodels.com/store2/index.php?route=product/category&path=20
They're not quite the same, but maybe their version (lower profile) of the pill shaped GW biker base would be a good choice. They also have a variety of rectangular bases.

I do a fair mech gaming in 10mm (1/160) though I use rebased mechwarrior clix and 45mm hex bases that I get from Litko. You can see what they look like here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/05/battle-for-addicks-mech-attack-battle.html
and at many other places on our club's blog. I don't know the exact size of the gundam mech's your using, but maybe some mechwarrior clix figs would be useful? some mechs can be pretty scale neutral if they don't have an obvious cockpit.

Best of luck with the project and be sure to show us what you come up with!

Thank you Eilif,

I'm still working on getting the models and bases. (I have a hard $6 limit per fig. and it's proving a bit hard to get some of them down that low. when sellers don't want to bundle shipping.)

But as soon as I have something I'll post it up here.

I've been running (I think) in the 1/300 scale of Gundam. Which seems hard to find. Gundam Standart was at $10 a model, but has been discontinued, and has gone up in price.

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like a plan. $6 per fig is a good limit. In my 28mm gaming, I've been shooting or $10-per-mech (lots second-hand mecha) with a cap around $20 that I've only crossed a few times. Setting a cap makes it take longer, but you'll end up with more figs and it won't impact your other gaming purchases as much.

In terms of size, I was meant specifically how tall they are? If you know the actual height, it may open new possibilities in terms of using toys, or even alternate models (like mechwarrior?) since mechs are often scale neutral.

Very true. I was aiming for the 3" height range.

I have quite a few MechWarrior Wizkids Heroclix Style mecha. But I'd like to focus on Gundam itself.

It will be slow collecting at $6 a fig, but as you pointed out, I am on a budget.

I've always been interested in stuff like this, but most of the rulesets are pretty...generic and not well thought out, and the smaller scale mobile suits aren't as nice figures and get to be almost as expensive as sourcing the super nice 1/144 HG model kits.

I've yet to find a neat set of rules that aren't overly clunky for a 1/44 scale game that didn't play on a huge table.

As Lockark pointed out, A 1/144th scale gundam game would be a lot of fun.

You could use MechWarrior Heroclicks for soldiers (almost to scale?)

If a decent rule set was made I would play this asap!

We have enough awesome people here at Dakkadakka, I'm sure we could find, or make, a ruleset!

Nick Davis' Gundam Battle System had a codex supplement that added infantry. If you ask nicely, Whitedragon still has all the files for it, I believe. They suggested using infantry that scales near the same size as Flames of War.

Yah, and looking at the depictions of Earth Federation and Zeon Infantry you can probly easily get away with modren american and WWII german infantry painted in the respective colors at that scale i feel.

The only rules I've seen are Liam Thomas "Gundam Skirmish game" rulesm checking out Nick Davis right now. In all honesty I was thinking maby just useing the vortex rules. The only probly is in vortex all the mecs would be kinda same-ish.

1/144 is close to 1/160 (10mm) and is reasonably well stocked when it comes to infantry. You've got DZC, CAV, Heavy Gear (not badly priced actually), mechwarrior clix, etc. There are also a few lines of 20h century and modern minis in 10mm.

Funny you mention WWII Germans as Zeon ground pounders as the whole reason I originally started picked up FoW Germans was for that use. Frankly, the first version fo FoW was so close to 40K at the time, it'd probably be pretty easy to adapt Nick's rules for FoW use.

I sent Vanguard the Gundam Battle System stuff, although I think somewhere has mirrored it on Reddit or something, so I guess I don't really need to store them anymore, I dunno.

On the other hand, who really wants infantry in their Gundam game? Not this guy! I just want to be able to do something cool with 1/144 scale kits (because they look so awesome). I'm less interested in the smaller stuff because of less customization options, less availability of different MS's, less detail, etc etc etc, but really, I haven't been able to find a decent ruleset yet so the figs I use is kinda irrelevant.

This thread makes me happy.
I really love the Mekton Z rules. You can use them to create accurate stats for any MS. The rules are great. You'll need the core book and the Mekton Z Plus source book. I made everything from HyGoggs to Nue Ziels using these rules.

Get on Ebay and have a look, you will get a bucket load of them for pretty cheap second hand from Japan. I picked up a few of them a while ago to do some smaller scale Gundam dioramas.

The 1/400 scale models were known as Gundam collection and came as candy toys, so 1 per box. You can often find job lots of people shipping out their hobbies. I'm not completely sure but I think the Pepsi cap figurines are also 1/400 scale, so if you can find them you will have almost the entire SEED/Destiny line up and every main Gundam (some pre-upgrade) until 00. The Gundam collection line goes beyond that and includes MSV and manga only designs (AoT stuff at least), but Ebay is charging about $15 a figure with postage to me at least and unless you have money to burn, you're going to struggle to build a decent army. Probably better to just wait on a job lot and then pick up anything you really want and consider the additional expense the same as if you were buying a character model for wargaming.

I've actually been trying to compare some of the newer 1/300 scale gundams available.

Barns and Noble still has (sometimes) the Gundam Standart, for the base $9.99 price. (while going on e-bay for almost twice that)

I am only waiting on my Strategy of Gundam figures to get here, and I will take some photos. I plan to compare SoG, StandArt, and Assault Kingdom.

If you know of any other 1/300 scale Gundam kits I should compare, let me know!

Don't the standarts have really weird proportions? I think that's the line that gives them huge skirt armour and shoulders.

Have you tried ordering them from Japanese websites like Hobby Search? It will take 2 weeks for them to arrive but the mark up on 1 kit from Ebay will be about the same as postage if you use SAL.

SoG don't look to be in scale, they have EZ Guns the size of OYW MS and the perfect Zeong is about half the height it should be.

For anyone who is interested, I've ordered from Hobbysearch and Hobbylink. Both times I used the cheap shipping option and though they took a long time to arrive I've never had a problem.

Often these sites are actually cheaper (even after shipping) than Ebay prices. I saved a bunch of $ buying my macross Destroid kits from Hobbylink.

I'd prefer a setting more like Turn A where you could use any MS from any show.
And I'd like to use the 144 scale models.

if you want to just allow every gundam then personally I would rather just someone write game mechanics for what ever the gak is happening in Gundam Build Fighters Try. Because I'm convinced that show is basically "Wargamers the anime". lol

Some Gundam universes have ground troops, not many, but they're there. In Gundam 00, the Middle Eastern forces had ground troops in addition to some very weak mobile suits. Yes, I know they're child soldiers, but still, they're there.

I've ordered from HLJ a bunch of times and never had any problems. Items arrive within 2 weeks, and given their standard 20% discount, even with postage it's often half of what resellers ask for on e-Bay.

As for 1/400 Gundams, I have several dozens of them, including a couple of the larger kits, all gotten from e-Bay. It's most economical to watch for cheap boxes, which usually give you the majority of the mecha from the given wave with no repeats. $40 for a sealed box of 15 is a good price IMO. Love the little dudes.
