Hi, n00b here looking to get into Warmachine. I'm leaning towards Cygnar (but am still giving the protectorate some consideration), and was wondering what my first purchase should be.

Cygnar battlegroup seems like an obvious place to start but it's all jacks and from what I've been reading, an all jack army is generally not a great idea. What do you think would be a good starting place for a completely new player looking to get into Cygnar?

Have you tried the game to make sure that you like it? If you haven't then I recommend the starter box. Its the cheapest way to try the game and make sure that you really like it.

If you already know that you like the game and you are just looking for the best way to start the faction, here it is:

You want to start out with the battlebox and get as many games possible. I helps you learn the mechanics of the game. If you can hold off till April a cygnar all in one box is due for release.

You mean the battle box? Yeah that was what I was looking at. But was a bit hesitant because I thought I'd be paying for an army I didn't really want (Khador) But I just went and looked at it and did a bit of number crunching, realizing that the cost of the battle box is still less than buying the units of either side individually.

Yeah, I'll almost certainly be buying the battle box as above. Thanks for the input guys.

I hope that you will enjoy the game. I started playing last year and played the battlebox for a good two months before I bought anything else. My advice is to take it slow and learn the game. Learn the different power attack that your war jacks can preform, one handed throws, two handed throws, Headbutt, trample attacks, ect. You will be surprised on how much you can learn from the battlebox. Find the PG at your local store he/she should help you learn the game and will be able to answer all of your gaming questions.

Your first purchase of ANY new army, escpecially when new to the game, should be this thing :
Spoiler:

This box (The Battle box or starter box) contains a quick rules set, and a caster and three jacks, then you play some battlebox games to learn the rules, then you buy units and solos
Of course this is just opinion, but either the Battle box or the All-in-one army box (which is pictured above, in all its glorious majesty) make good first purchases as they are great value for money and contain useful models to both learn the rules and also good models to play with when you expand

EDIT: And yes an all jack army isnt good, but thats why yiou play battle box games, where both players just use a box each, so that you learn the rules, as a completely new player the game can be daunting, trust me I know
