I'm making a lot of forest bases so I need a lot of variety in plant life. Here's how I make ferns for undergrowth. It's a little bit fiddly but gives good results!

paint some ordinary paper green.

use one of these cheap paper punches from eBay to cut out a bunch of stems.

glue them together at the Base with Pva.

Ah-hah! Nice find. I'd put in that, for extra detail, you can also run a blunt blade or pencil down the centre of each frond and out to the tip of each leaf to give a more natural texture.

A nice way indeed! I'll have to keep an eye out for one of these. I like brass-etched scenery, but it's not very forgiving in the clumsy-oaf dept.

I thought of using brass etch but the amount I need would be expensive, so just thought I'd explore making my own first and happy with how they turn out

There is not this idea.

Nice and simple. I've even got some of those paper punches lying around. No fern ones, but I might be able to fill my battlefields with butterflies now.

You could probably dip the paper pieces in some watery green paint if you wanted to get rid of the white edges, but from the pictures I'm not sure its necessary

Very nice effect, and so simple, will keep an eye out for a cutter like that.

Could work nicely with green paper, avoids the painting, and in a couple of shades. Doing jungle bases for my nids, may borrow this to see about a few live plants to go with the jungle floor scatter (very cheap dried mixed herbs, soaked on the base in pva then painted).

Fantastic use of the punch! I'll keep an eye out for one of these at my local Micheal's Crafts.

great idea... (wife is a scrapbooker, maybe she has some punches)..

BUT.. why not just use green paper? easy enough to find, and in scrapbooking areas should be easy enough to find mottled green sheets..

Or a local copy shop might have a few green pages you can use.. or the hardware store might be a great place to source green paper samples..
