Hello there,

I'm just getting into FoW and am really enjoying reading through all the books etc. and I think I pretty much know how to build a list, I just don't know what list to build.
I seem to have combed the net for any info. but aside from hunting through page upon page of forum posts, I'm at a loss.

I'm starting a late war German army. I will primarily be playing against British and U.S armies.

I think the main problem is I really have no point of reference. It's not like 40K or something where you can do a cursory search on Google and find unit-by-unit break downs of every units' pros and cons lol.

I've heard 'just play tanks' to 'you need a balanced force' to 'HAHA! Good luck late war Germany' to 'SS or Fallschirmjager are the only way to go'.

I saw on the starter section here on Dakka that 'Grey Wolf' has good army lists (can they be used in a western front theatre by the way? As long as everyone's playing late war?) but I don't know what I'm looking for within it. I was going to start with the 'Open Fire!' box set of course, but when I expand I just want to be sure I'm not wasting my time with a certain list or investing my very limited money in something rubbish.

Any pointers I can get in the right direction will be much appreciated

Open fire will give you the guts of a grenadier company. These dudes can then be supported by panzers, painters or tigers depending on the list you use. They are a good starting point as nearly all the lists can take them.

Plus a few plastic half tracks and you got yourself some mechinsed infantry to support a tank list.

The nice bit about germans is you don't need too much to do quite a few different lists.

If you get open fire you get the two grenadier platoons (+ command) and done StuGs/Pak 40's.

To make a good beginners list (I recconend the free 'Devils charge digital' lists on forces of war - also known as Panzers to the meuse') take their grenadier list, add some Nebelwerfers for smoke and some Pumas for recon and you have a decent little infantry starting force.

It's then really easy to expand, want to play mechanised germans? Just buy half tracks from battlefront or PSC.

Want to go tanks? Just buy a couple of boxes of panzer4's/panthers. Those combine with the infantry stuff will also give good lists.

After that you'll have an idea how the game works, and you can decide how to expand from there.

What he said.

One thing though, pure tank armies just don't work well in FoW so its not something that I would recommend you do unless you know how to get the best out of them. You can't go far wrong with Grenadiers; solid infantry backed up by some AT guns, mortars and armour will always do well.

The best Medium Armor list is Panzers to the Meuse, also known as Devil's Charge Digital on Forces of War.

For Grenadiers, you might try this one

This is an awful list for a beginner, an always attack infantry list is very tough to use

The FoW thread opening found on /tg/ on 4chan contains a number of useful links for beginners, you might want to consider looking into those.

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
