Kickstarter Post:

Spoiler:
The ModCube Kickstarter is live!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1388589874/modcube-part-tokens-part-dice-fully-modular

There are "first to ship" early birds, so check it out if you've been keeping an eye on this!

Here are a few teaser pics

Original post:

Spoiler:
Hi guys,

I would like to introduce a new product I have been working on for some time, but this is the first public unveiling of it! The only people to have seen it before are the Dakka DCMs and mods, the AdeptiCon organizers, and a select few people who have been helping me with the creation of the ModCube.

First, a few pics!!

As you may have guessed from the pics, the ModCube is a gaming aid which enables you to keep 6 common gaming tokens on a single cube, and quickly rotate between these tokens. Token designs are made to be compatible with the most popular sci-fi wargames, starting with Dogfight and Vehicle Damage cubes.

You can see a few more on the website and facebook page:

http://www.modcube.com
http://www.facebook.com/themodcube

Molding of the ModCube is being done in China, with first production samples expected in April. All lasercut acrylic panels will be produced in the USA, enabling us to quickly put out new releases as games update and change!

I will be showing off the ModCube at AdeptiCon with the help of a few other members of Dakka. Come and check out the booth if you are attending, or if not, we'll be sure to post up lots of pics! I will also be unveiling one more new ModCube design before AdeptiCon - a cube compatible with Infinity! I would love to see any comments or questions that you have about the ModCube, so please share your thoughts

I just attended a tournament this past Saturday and had a very similar idea! Very cool, I'll be supporting. I'd love to see some for Malifaux.

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

Fantastic idea. Will buy once available.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

I'd rather buy a quality product than waste time putting stickers on dice, which I imagine would look incredibly amateurish and half arsed.

Thanks for the comments!

Dez - While a design compatible with Infinity is the next ModCube I'll be working on, Malifaux has been suggested to me as a good fit and I will definitely be looking at doing one for it sooner rather than later! Not before AdeptiCon, though - there is so much to do!

Monders - That's exactly what we're aiming for with these, a high quality product. The advantage of the ModCube is that you can remove the acrylic panels and reconfigure it later if desired. It has been compared to custom dice, but those tend to be expensive for a small run, and cannot be reconfigured if game options change.

A good example is the Dogfight cubes (compatible with X-wing) - you can configure several of them with Cloak in place of Target Lock if you want, to use with Phantoms (who can cloak, but cannot target lock). The other huge advantage for X-wing, is rather than hunting through your token bin and swapping tokens on and off the board for each ship action, you just rotate the cube to your new action! The default panels are: Focus, Evade, Stress, Target Lock, Target Lock / Focus, Target Lock / Stress.

Any questions, just ask, I would love to answer if I can!

Or who would buy cheap wooden cubes from the craft store (couple dozen for a couple bucks) and neatly mark the token symbol/writing on each side.
We did this for the Bolt Action dice using different colored fine sharpies for each force.

I admit these do look nice.

I think this is an excellent idea RiTides. I like the fact that it's in a familiar form and is configurable for multiple gaming systems. Common-sense gaming aids are always welcome yet often so rare (unfortunately).

This is an awesome idea. Will definately be getting some when available.

Question though, how easy or difficult are they to assemble/disassemble? Are the latches that hold them together pretty sturdy and won't come apart easily?

Love the concept. As someone who loves getting little helpful add-ons like this I'll definitely be interested. (Especially as I've purchased sets which were invalidated by new editions)

I'd love to see more details of the components and how switching the tiles in and out works.

Nice concept. Like most things like it, the price point will determine if I’m interested. For things that I can make a version of myself, the question I ask is if it’s worth the extra cost for having someone else do a crisp, clean, professional job. Rather then my slap-dash crummy job.

But, great looking product in a little niche of our little niche. Roll on RiTides!

Thanks guys!

Chancetragedy and Eldarain - Here is a quick render of the CAD model, to give you an idea of what it looks like when diassembled:

I'll have lots of prototype ModCubes with me to show off at AdeptiCon, of course, and people can try taking them apart and post their impression! Given that people always tend to roll them first thing after picking them up, and will likely just toss them in a tray or dice bag to transport, I've gone with a pretty tight locking on the tabs. The real test will be the first articles of the production parts, of course, which I will definitely receive and test before launching (expecting them in late April - the tooling is already paid for!).

Nevelon - I am sure many feel the same way, these have to be affordable! I will be selling them in sets of 8, with prices still to be locked down, but it will be in the range of $3 - $3.75 per cube, depending on how many sets are ordered. If you compare to other custom acrylic token sets for games like X-wing, which don't provide any extra functionality beyond the card tokens that come standard, I think these will be a good value! I am also using 2-tone acrylic rather than paint, so the designs are extremely robust and not able to be scratched off.

Cheers , it took me a while to get to this point! At last year's AdeptiCon, I showed some early aluminum prototypes to legoburner (Dakka's co-owner), but it was clear that they would need to be plastic to allow them to snap together tightly, yet still be able to be disassembled easily. I then tested some 3-piece plastic designs, but the seams were too obvious and the design just wasn't attractive enough.

Since moving to the 2-piece design you see above, I've printed well over a hundred prototypes to perfect the form/fit/function - that's the advantage of having a 3D printer! I can't imagine trying to optimize the fit of something like this without it. Now, it just remains for the injection molding company to produce parts that match the prototypes. I've gone through many design reviews with them to make sure this will be the case, and will be getting production samples before launching to be 100% sure the final product fits together perfectly!

The fact that it’s a modular play aid is a big selling point. I’ve got shelves of cards, dice and tokens for other games that do nothing but collect dust these days. The fact that with a quick swap these dice can serve a new edition, or even game is quite nice, and helps justify the money spent.

How much are the inserts going to be? This might be a way to, for example, get affordable substitutes for things like the BFG order dice.

This is pretty cool.

What are the faces? Just lazer cut acrylic?

ones numbered from 5-10 would be useful to keep track of the random ld in renegade armies.

Some sets for infinity would be really nice too.

I know I want the space and vehicle damage sets already.

Have these been tested for rolling and randomization? Or is there no expectation that they are randomized dice, just die-like cubes?

Such a design could lend itself to game systems based upon customizable dice where players can upgrade their pips based upon rules or progression. Could be a new genre of game as most other dice games are based upon static dice and needing to get a all new dice.

These look cool, good luck with the project Are you gonna do a kickstarter or just release em?

Maybe I missed it but what size are they? Maybe you could try a size compatible with The Game Crafter's tokens, so folks could make their own, print them through TGC, and then use your cubes? Who knows maybe TGC would be interested in buying a bunch for that very purpose, right now they have some cheapy sticker version for custom dice, these would look much better.
