I have been playing with the concept of a predominately Scarab Necron Army. First off yes, I know its going to get shot all to pieces. However, the theme is attractive to me because I am a huge horror fan and an unending wave of flesh rending scarabs against a numerically inferior but better armed group is almost a troupe in current scifi writing.

The base idea is to have at least 80% of the army be scarabs, 15% spyders, and 5 percent a Necron Overlord put together so that his cloak and loincloth are scarabs. The Spyders will allow for more Scarabs to be introduced after the game starts, combined with Scarabs having RP now should keep a significant number of the little horrors on the board. I do not know if their is a formation Necrons can take that would allow Scarabs to Deep Strike but that would add to the chaos. If the Necron Overlord can get something to make the game a Night Fight Ala the Storm Lords ability that would go some way to making it a real fight for the opponent.

Again, I know the army will get shot all to pieces. I am not trying to win but make it an interesting and very different game for someone to play against Necrons.

Thoughts?

PS. I have mentioned this idea to a couple friends who play Warhammer 40K and they all think I am nuts, lol.

You're insane... but you're my kind of insane.

I've had great fun with scarab-based armies in the past. You just need to have enough bases to keep spawning...

Actually, the army is more viable than ever now with the Canoptek Harvest formation, although you'll have to take some Wraiths sadly.

I think a Scarab army could work, actually. Sure, they'd be easy to remove, but their Entropic Strike special rule allows them to hurt anything.

If you want Reanimation Protocols on your Scarabs however, you need the Canoptek Harvest formation. As long as the Spyder is alive, you can give RP to the Scarabs and the Wraiths.

You could get Deep Strike on a unit of Scarabs by taking the Veil of Darkness on the Overlord and attaching him to a unit of bugs. He slows them down if he stays with them, but you can always just leave the unit the turn after you DS.

If I were you, I'd definitely use the Decurion and field a Reclamation Legion and then just spam Canoptek Harvests. Fewer Scarabs that way, but they get 4+ RP at least (as long as their Spyders are alive).

I will have to go back and reread the scarabs but I thought the new book had them with RP as standard?

No, no canoptek unit comes with RP.

The Canoptek Harvest formation gives them Ressurection Protocols. Technically they can have Shred or Fleet instead, but who would seriously choose those?

Rather than an Overlord, I suggest using Orikan's rules to represent your Volscarabtron.

Yeah, pick RP every time. Scarabs already have Fleet because they're Beasts anyway.

Good point about Orikan! He's probably the coolest HQ for Necrons now.

You could always model some Wraiths out of a rising "wave" of scarabs to pay the Wraith-tax for the formation?

Yeah, I had the same idea but eventually went with max Scarabs in the Canoptek Harvest formation in order to give them RP.

Then in playing them, I had serious anti air problems, but I didn't want to add Night Scythes because they weren't Canoptek'ish. So I added the Everliving Tomb instead.

And ended up with this:

I'm working on a Pylon currently and will later replace the Tomb with the Pylon.

If I took the Stormlord with its night fighting rule would that eliminate the anti air issue? Can't shoot them if you can't see them kinda idea?

I think it would be sweet, and then just having spiders creating more and more...the horror!

Be careful though, if it does good you'll be called cheesy for spamming scarabs...

The only thing is I'm not sure how to squeeze in Stormlord without having to take either a CAD, Reclamation or go Unbound.

With what's pictured above, it's just 3 Canoptek Harvest Formations with max Scarabs and an Everliving Tomb Formation.

I have an unbound Canoptek list, but whilst I've updated it in theory I've not actually deployed it yet because it's frankly too nasty for my meta now. Was already pushing things before.

On the plus side, my fully bound all Destroyer list is coming along great.
