I want to use the Soviet P-39 Kobra in FoW from the eastern front book, but it seems as though they dont have a model for it? Is it impossible to be WYSIWYG?

Odd. I thought Battlefront carried a P-39.

Using a proxy is one option. And since Battlefront doesn't sell an Airacobra, most opponents will probably be fine with it. Alternately, use one from another source. You'll need to make sure that the one you get either comes with a flight stand of the appropriate height, or can be adapted to use a BF flight stand.

Being in America, I guess your best bet is Armaments in Miniature, for the plane and stand (assuming you want a 15mm one.)

15mm is 1/100th scale. The planes Battlefront uses are 1/144th scale.

Which looks silly.

I second the suggestion of Armaments in Miniature. Superb service, great selection, and they paint up really well.

Not really, considering the aircraft sit way closer to the table than they should the 1/144 silhouette is more realistic for gameplay purposes representing the altitude that the aircraft would actually be at.

Er, wot? From the players perspective they should be larger! Otherwise, if you're suggesting that the models be scaled according to distance from some central point, all the arty that by rights should be km's to the rear should be modelled with 6mm figs! :-)

So something that's further away would appear to be bigger than something that's closer? Because the "player's perspective" is from the tabletop up, usually from an AA gun looking to shoot down the aircraft in question.

We aren't talking about strategic bombers though.

Nearly all the aircraft featured in FOW are dedicated ground attack fighters or dive bombers. They aren't flying 1000s of feet above the battlefield. Read any account of from these pilots and they all say the same thing - they frequently operated at Nap Of Earth levels that would be considered suicidal by modern pilots. Planes like the Stuka G and HS129 that mounted direct-fire weapons had to be flown at these level to be effective. Go to your local regional airport and watch small planes land - they don't look small, they look life-size.

If we're gaming 15mm, and using dedicated ground support aircraft, we should be using 15mm aircraft models.

And they wouldn't be flying at the height of the flight stand. That puts them way too low. If you want 1/100th scale fighters you're going to need at least double the height of the flight stand.

Eh...

It's for the better, I think. You're essentially talking about a marker. It shows up, it does it's business (or gets shot down), and it leaves the battlefield. Bigger planes just take up more space, and are harder to deal with when the wings are extended out across your unit (especially in the old days, when you had *three* planes on the table instead of just one).

1/144 is big enough to look nice around the 15mm stuff, and small enough to leave a minimal footprint while it's on the table.

I run both 15mm Stuka and Me262. Never had a problem with fitting them unto the table and have received nothing but compliments from opponents about how "right" they look.

Anyway, to each his own.

Agreed - no right or wrong way to have fun playing a game! I was really just responding to the comments about the aircraft in a 15mm game needing to be at a different scale :-/
