We've only just started playing. We have rolled a D4, assuming that is standard, to determine if its day, dawn, dusk, or night. What do you do? What does a tournament do?

It's always day time unless there is a special rule like Night Attack in play.

Odd, it seems like aircraft and infantry are much more balanced if there is a night chance. Are most tournaments entirely day?

Yes they are. You only use the rules for 'Time of Day' if the Mission (No Man's Land, pg. 288) or a National Special Rule (Night Attack, pg. 246) are in play.

Yeah night only used with lists which have the 'night attack rule' otherwise daylight

the new nachtjager book has a bit on night fighting in it
