Afternoon all This first post is gonna be a bit long and pic heavy so bear with me

Been away from the hobby pretty much since just before I moved to South Korea 10 years ago. There were no GW shops or stockists here when I moved, so that was that. BUT recently I found one - yup ONE.....LFGS in Seoul that does stock what I been a craving (Wahheeyyy for Orctown). Really nice owner and he also runs 5 or 6 gaming tables for folk to use. (Apparently the gak he has to go through to get his stock is insane and no, before anyone says it, it's not bcs of GW)
Anyways.....last Christmas I went in and abused the gak out of my checkcard (what they call a debitcard over here) and picked the rather delicious Dark Vengeance boxed set with a view of getting back into painting again.

I've been meaning to set up a plog here from the get go but.....just getting 'round to it the now. So this first post with be a bit of a catch up of where I'm up to so far.

First up was the Dark Angel Tac Squad. First time painting in over 10 years - was a bit of a headscratcher trying to remember what the bloody hell to do. Thankfully the ol' intermacwebs is full of stuff to help

Was rather pleased with how that little lot turned out. Defintely was a bit rusty with the old wood n'bristles though ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Next up, couldnt hold it off - had to have a bash at the Helbrute - Mortis Metalikus. I downloaded the DkVen novella and read through it for any relevant fluff that could transfer to the figures.....scars, markings etc etc. Not the worst of books, nice idea to tell the story through the eyes of different characters,.....but you tell it was a bit of a rush tie-job for the boxed set. Still.....Helbrute....paints.......off we go! I really didnt like the way he had been done ófficially' - bright red armour and red skin......too bright and clean.....I wanted a more worn, dulled down look so this is what came out

Gorgeous gorgeous figure to paint. Really enjoyed painting him up. I decided to theme the bases for the whole DkVen boxed set......keeps them homogenous and within the same setting. Nothing too fancy - old worn cobbled streets and rubble. The colours go well with both the greens of the DA and the red of The Chosen

Automatically Appended Next Post:
After the lovliness of ol'Mortis, I reckoned I'd do one of the figs in the set I didnt like so much - Chapter Master Balthasar.
Up to this point I had no Nuln Oil and no Agrax Earthshade due to that fact that Orctown was sold out and wouldnt be getting new stock in for a while due to the strict customs limitations here on importing chemicals (and they count paints in that category) so I was just having to mix my own up. Worked fine tbh. There's more about what paints and schemes and such on my offsite blog - wont go into it here. The link is below if anyone wants

Anyways Balthasar......The sculpt is nice....lots of lovely clear detail and that bu the pose.......aisshhhh - horrible pose. Faux heroic wannabe samurai kinda thing going on. And those bloody wings on his helmet. Much as I like the DA, and they are probably my favourite of the loyalist chapters, I really hate the winged helmet motif. Reminds me of Asterix & Obelix and not in a good way :(

So, got onto the fella and painty painty - here's how Balthasar the Gaul turned out

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Happy enough with him BUT I really need/want to go back and redo his sword - Fellbane. I'll get 'round to it

Felt poor ol'Mortis was getting a bit lonely so next up was to take take on some of the Chaos Cultists. There's two squads - Sect Anarkus (CC squad) and Sect Tetchy guy (shooty squad). Really like th Anarkus fig so they won out and were up of a little painty painty next. Loved painting this lot for the most part and did them as a oner rather than breaking them up like I did with the Tac Squad. I did take a break in the middle to paint up an Eldar Wraithlord I picked up when I was home in Ireland but that's another plog (below again)

Cracking squad this. Anarkus looks kinda monk-ish so I themed the squad around his kinda monkly attire and colours. Think I liked painting the flamer fella the most of this lot. Him or Anarkus himself. Anyhow - here they be:

That's me almost up to date. Currently working on the DkVen Deathwing squad. 2 down, 3 to go. I pop some WIP photos up later. They are also gonna be entered in Paradigm's monthly painting challenge:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/637582.page

Check it out and throw in a wee entry if you can

Well, that's that. Bloody long first/catch-up post. Congrats if you made it the whole way through. You've won......well, feck all actually but such is life in the GrimDark
I'll be updating here as much/often as I can until I've made my way through the main DkVen boxed set and then probably the two add-ons as well

Cheers
Irish Steve

Excellent stuff, your paintwork is very neat and clean, especially for someone who hasn't painted in 10 years! The cultists are the standout, I think, but the Helbrute is a close second!

Quick wee update. Working on Squad Barachiel these days. DkVen Deathwing squad. Really nice group to paint. Painting them one by one rather than all together. I'll be entering them in Paradigm's monthly painting contest if I can get them all done in time. Anyways - here's a load of wip photos I've been hoarding

Korean?

Not to go of topic, but I have a few Korean friends. Getting my head around language (they can speak English, and well, but they speak Korean to each other)

Nice minis by the way. One of my English friends is getting money for dark vengeance, then he comes and asks me to paint the chaos for him
I'm looking forward to that though.

Thx very much
Yup - Korean. I live over here and my finace is Korean. DkVen boxed set is one of the best deals I seen in ages. The sculpts are excellent for a starter kit. I was well happy when I unboxed. The Chaos lot especially. Cultists are really nice but The Chosen are fantastic! Havent gotten to painting them yet but really looking forward to it. Detail is lush. Shame the usual Chaos marines to buy are up to the same standard

Thx Az. It always was my fav hobby back in the day so was well stoked when I finally found a store here in Korea that stocks. Mail order to here is a bit of a btch due to high customs fees on any package over $150. Mad though eh - one store for the whole country of 50+million people!! Still, not complaining - am well stocked up now.....too well stocked actually; I need to stay away from that store for a month or 4 lol

Dardariel and his assault cannon pretty done. Got the 2 different washes done on the next term to be done - brother Varhmiel, formerly a member of the Ravenwing so gonna do one of his pauldrons in black to honour that. That done - time to base Brother D. For the DV models I decided on a common theme for the bases of all the models. Old cobbled streets strewn with some rubble. Simple but the colours work well with all the different factions. This is the base for Brother Dardariel. Came out pretty ok

*bloody photo is sideways again. Feth fethidy feth ><. I think if you click it, it comes up right way up

Really nice base! How did you do the cobbles/brickwork?

I buy these sheets of moulded cobbles and the cut out a circle for each base. Stick it down. Spray black, base with mournfang, wash with a nuln oil/abaddon mix and then dry brush. Comes out pretty nice
Think it's like a dollar a sheet at the most. Meant for train collectors ㅋㅋㅋ

Onto #3. Brother....Varhmiel. The donkey work is all done now - priming, basing, fist washes n a tidy up. Gonna throw up step photos for this fella
Primed with a gentle spray of Skull White (not massively impressed with the Skull White spray. Really loose and watery. Does nowhere near as good a job as the Chaos Black)
over that (pic1) based with 2 thinned layers of Admin Grey and the joints, skulls, heavy piping based with Mech Standard Grey. Jayz basing is sooooo bloody dull to do
Next (pic 2) recesses and Mech Grey parts washed loosely with the ubiquitous Agrax and then once dry the deep deep recess and the Mech grey parts are rewashed with a nit of Nuln.
Then tidy up time - back in with Admin grey for a general tidy up 1-2 layers tinned depending where. Blacked in the pauldron (Varhmiel is the former Ravenwing fella), storm bolter casing (I hate the red casing that is usual with DAs - much prefer a nice black one) and based the rest of the gun with the usual leadbelcher.
That's the donkey work done the now, next comes all the fun stuff

Cheers. Those basic stages are a bit of a drag but after that - gets fun. Prefer the bolted with the black. Looks more like a weapon fer killing!! Than a Christmas decoration lol

Well that a feth of a weekend. Went up to my friend's place in the mountains where we're having the wedding this may. Bit of a hike to get there but no worries. The guy from the catering company was due to meet us there today and look the place over as its a garden wedding and check where tables etc are going. Blah blah stuff. Price had already been agreed and we had to take the medium expensive option to get him to take the job on due to the distance etc. was all agreed and deposit paid. Today we get told that it'll be an extra W300,000 due to the distance (again) that's about S300 I think. Aghhhhhhh! When we started organising this wedding I learnt a great Korean word, partially in jest and partially bus of the insane amounts of money demand/spend when it comes to weddings over here. 사기꾼 (sa-gi-kkon) - con-artist, ripoff merchant. Anyways, enough of the ranting. Eventually got home and got the next stage of brother Varhmiel's painting done. Layed down the warmer top light colour and blended it into the cooler low shadow colour. There is always one part that just refuses to bloody blend but got it in the end....I think. Left hip plate. Also lightened the top of the black pauldron, dry brushed some highlight on the bolter casing and the black pipes and then glazed them with a nuln wash to soften the highlights down a touch. Coming along I reckon
Next up - blocking in the secondary parts; chest Aquila, winged broken blade, eyes and a few other bits. Into the fun stages now ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Secondary details layered n highlighted. Few edge highlights on the uppers. Final details done and the boyo Is nearing completion just a bit of staining, weathering and chipping to be done and that gets done after basing. Speaking of which, need to get a move on and make a base for good ol brother Varhmiel ㅋㅋㅋ happy enough with how he's coming along though
