I know there used to be named Archons for DE with Vect and the Duke, my question is why did they not come out with more. Every other generic HQ has a name version, but Archons, who are usually the leaders of warbands per fluff.

Now if it is for lack of models, couldn't they just do what they did with SW and Harold Deathwolf and just say that the name archon model is a named character. The main reason is Archons seem really lack luster other than the 2++. Where haemmies have Urien and have the ability to boon other units. Succubus have Lileith and they can have AP2, what does that really leave for the archon.

They didn't have the models and if Chapterhouse is anything to go by, if they didn't make the models, someone else would and profit of them.

There might be a DE release for new named Archons...I'm not optimistic though.

GW took the easy way out and killed off most of the DE special characters jn the last codex. Rather than make a new model or even a new named unit.

They could have done things different, but didn't.

Though with the archon why not do a Harold Death Wolf and take the archon model and call him a named character.

Well proxying a generic unit model as a character would have been possible but they removed a bunch of special characters from the codex >.>.

Though if they would be anything like the remaining characters they would be stupidly expensive and barely better than their generic counterparts with much less options and buffs. If Vect comes back he better be the pimp daddy he's supposed to be and have some kickass special rule. Urien is the only one sort of decent in the current codex but for his cost you might as well take a generic Haemonculus. Lelith is a piece of paper with sharp edges and Drazhar is an over expensive beat stick. Vect and some of the others could bring something if done right to add a new element to Dark Eldar play.

Well, none of them got killed off, so I still have hope we will get single rules-in-box releases for them.

Simple answer: because it's hard.

GW Answer: simply purchase another army with a named generic HQ model and use them as allies or unbound, problem solved.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

This is the perfect example of GW short sightedness. Yes some people might make some money off of GW properties. But lets be real here... Anyone even want to guess how many other figures there are of evil elves in tight leather out there.... anyone... And even worse is that it wasn't taking away any money from them in the first place. Its not like they had a Duke Sil-something-or-other model to sell and somebody else had a Duke Sil-something-or-else model to sell and they were choosing the other guy.

Also, now, I dont have any real numbers to back me up, but I'd wager that the Baron, model or no, sold many more boxes of Hellons when he existed than is currently selling right now.

And the last bit I have to offer is that while you need "offical" models to game in GW sanctioned tourniments or maybe in GW owned stores, the average B&M or basement player is going to field what ever model looks coolest. If someone else has evil elf in Sci-Fi armor and I feel it looks cooler than GW archon model, I'm sure as hell going to field that one instead.

GW was really lazy with the Dark Eldar codex release. Instead of maybe keeping the likes of Vect - and maybe even just him - and making a model for him, they ditched them and made a new generic archon kit instead.

If the Duke had stayed, I might have gotten into playing Dark Eldar. It used to be a whimsical fancy but a couple months before the new codex, I was beginning to become sorely tempted...

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

No model, no rules. Besides, they know they can dangle the possibility of a new clampack and DLC at a later date for mo' money. It's a proven concept.

They gimped armies... baronstar armies were rendered illegal for CAD.

GW has been super lazy with releases, split the content and special rules into formations with useless fething units that they are practically force feeding into the game.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

This

and for the record, the Duke wasn't/isn't an archon (even his stats weren't as good). The only named archons were Vect (whose model was so old and ugly that they removed his rules rather than continuing to promote it) and Lady Malys (who never had a model)
