Does Warmachine have any armies/builds that are comparable to MSU armies in 40k?

Yeah, when i read the small novel that is the Death Guard unit options and think about resolving the attacks from a melee-oriented min size death guard squad, the thing that springs to mind is "Accessible!"

Oceans 18? The Sorscha list with a whole mess of solos. That may fit the bill, although they're solos rather than units, but it's multiple activations, vectors of attack, etc, so that and other solo heavy lists may scratch that itch.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Muse on Mini's did a whole podcast series on MSU style play. Works really well with things like Boom Howlers, Nyss Hunters etc...

Looking at numbers it seems best in a solo spam list as mentioned OR a theme force that offers unit discounts.

For example, Fist does well with MSU on some units too.

Ok, thanks guys.

I was just curious as to whether that type of army actually existed in Warmachine.

It does, but not in the same way as a 40k player would understand it. As mentioned above.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

The biggest reason it doesn't apply well is that if units do come in multiple sizes they have only two sizes. Min and Max. And many units don't even have that. Like the Knights Exemplar or Doomreavers mentioned above, they only have one unit size.

When I saw this I was thinking, eh? "Malifaux Soulstone Union?"

Purely out of interest, what is MSU in non Malifaux terms?

Miners & Steamfitters Union.

And yeah, my mind immediately went towards Malifaux, too.

oh I see, well I guess Cryx would fit the bill perhaps? Bane thralls/knights, Bile thralls, Mcthralls, Satyxis Raiders can all be effective in min units!

You can run MSU style lists in Warmachine, but the underlying concept of why they give you an advantage is minimal compared to 40k. In 40k MSU allows you to min/max upgrades (i.e. 2 x 5 guys with special weapon rather than 10 guys with 1 special weapon), but more importantly it allows you more tactical options with positioning, application and dispersion of damage. When you are attacking having multiple units able to apply damage gives you redundancy, but also allow you to maxmise your damage output and avoid overkill situations (better to shoot 100pts of stuff to finish the last guy in the unit than 300pts). Defensively MSU has an advantage against large units for the same reason - you lose effectiveness if all that your powerful unit can kill is 100pts of stuff (when there are 5 more identical units ready to return fire).

Most of these concepts don't really apply in Warmachine, most UA's have FA1 or 2 and bring meaningful buffs so 1 properly loaded out unit will be better than multiple sub optimal units. Outside of tiers most units have an FA which prevents spamming as well. The advantage you get from application of damage output is completely removed because attacks/damage are done on a model by model basis so you can't waste attacks. A list that is heavy on solos is similar, but part of the reason those lists are strong is that 2pt solos with guns tend to be flexible effecient damage dealers. The other factor is that deathclock tends to be a problem if you have more units to activate.
